VATICAN - 15 April the Pope will preside a special Mass for his 80th birthday: the whole Church is encouraged “to raise an intense prayer of thanksgiving to God”

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On Sunday 15 April in St Peter’s Square at 10am Pope Benedict XVI will preside a special Mass on the occasion of his 80th birthday and the 2nd anniversary of his election as Successor of Peter.

The Office for the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff announced that the cardinals, archbishops and bishops of the Roman Curia and representatives of the clergy of the diocese of Rome are invited to concelebrate.

In a letter for the occasion addressed to the diocese the Pope’s Vicar for Rome diocese Cardinal Camillo Ruini writes “it will be a day of great joy when we will give thanks to God for gift of our Bishop and Pope, Benedict XVI. In a profound spirit of Easter we will pray with the Pope and for the Pope, that God may grant him abundant divine blessings, sustain and comfort him in spirit and body so he may be for us an example and trusted guide in the faith and in love for God and for neighbour and in hope which will not go unrewarded… may the celebration of the Holy Father’s birthday be an opportunity for all of us to sing again ‘Tu illum adiuva’ - sustain O God, the Successor of Peter” - the chanted prayer from which as he himself said in his homily during the Mass to mark the beginning of his Petrine Ministry, the Holy Father drew “great consolation” coming from whole Church, the Church lively and young because she believes in the Risen Christ, living and present among His people.” (S.L.)
