SCRIPTURE COMMENTARY #191

"Or how sayest thou to thy brother: Let me cast the mote out of thy eye; and behold a beam is in thy own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thy own eye, and then shalt thou see to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye." (Matt. 7:4-5)

VENIAL SIN AND MORTAL SIN: By the distinction which our Lord draws between "motes" and "beams", He teaches us that there is a great difference between one kind of sin and another.

[From 'A Practical Commentary on Holy Scripture' by Bishop Knecht, D.D.]
