With about 250 thousand people in attendance, the 91st anniversary of the apparitions in the "Cova da Iria" was celebrated this Tuesday. For Cardinal Saraiva Martins, who presided over the ceremony, Fatima is a spiritual oasis for all the world:

"This is certainly a spiritual oasis for the West, which is losing the core values on which its culture is based, and not only for the West, but throughout the world. It is a real spiritual, moral basin of humanity. It is also a unique phenomenon, that doesn't exist in any other part of the world. This shows the great importance Fatima has from a purely human, say emotional, psychological, point of view. It has an extraordinary fascination, which is the charm of the Madonna."

This year 's remembrance of May 13th was also united with prayers for Darfur, China and Burma. But the highpoint was the farewell to the shrine, with thousands of white handkerchiefs waving over the sanctuary.
