Priest Shortage Taking its Toll:

Diocese of San Bernardino says ‘priest shortage’ to blame for closure of desert parish

The Diocese of San Bernardino is closing a 50-year-old parish in the desert community of Joshua Tree, citing “the ongoing priest shortage” as the reason.

Effective Aug. 1, St. Christopher of the Desert church at 61261 Sunburst Drive in Joshua Tree, will close its doors, according to a news announcement on the diocesan website. The parish was founded in 1960 and has 281 registered families.

St. Christopher of the Desert “will become part of St. Mary of the Valley Parish, Yucca Valley in a new realignment plan for the Morongo Valley,” said the diocesan announcement, attributed to Bishop Gerald Barnes.

“The ongoing priest shortage, the aging of priests and the retiring of St. Christopher’s pastor, Father Ignatius Rasquina, were reasons given for the parish closure,” said the announcement.

Next month, priests of the Congregation of the Resurrection will be turning back Blessed John XXIII (formerly Resurrection Parish) in Fontana, and St. Thomas Moore Parish in Rialto to the diocese. Citing a shortage of priests in the Congregation of the Resurrection, Fr. Michael Danek, provincial superior for the order in the United States, announced in March that the Resurrectionist fathers would be leaving parishes in the San Bernardino diocese.

Also effective in July, the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette will transfer the pastoral care of two parishes in San Bernardino’s High Desert back to the diocese. The La Salettes are turning back Our Lady of the Desert Parish in Apple Valley and St. Paul Parish in Lucerne Valley to the diocese. The move comes after more than 16 years of service to High Desert parishes by the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette. The religious order will continue to administer St. Christopher’s Parish in Moreno Valley, and may be assigned an additional parish in the Moreno Valley area in the future, the diocesan newspaper reported earlier this year.
