The Life and Death of a Ukrainian Martyr

Have you ever wondered about the saints the Church calls “companions,” such as “Saints Perpetua, Felicitas, and Companions” or “St. Charles Lwanga and Companions?” Who are these companions – and are they less holy than the saints who are mentioned by name?

Proof that this is not the case can be found in the life of Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky, C.Ss.R., who is one of the 24 companions of Nicholas Charnetsky, all of whom were beatified by the late Pope John Paul II in 2001.

Blessed Vasyl is a Ukrainian bishop who spent years in a Soviet gulag because he refused to deny his faith, and whose body was found to be incorrupt almost 30 years after he was buried.
