Three Parables (Luke 15:1-32)

Prodigal Son 4

Hi Friends:
Fr. Gilbert Medina, our new Parochial Administrator has started a weekly  column in St. Mary of the Lakes bulletin. In case you missed it, I'm reprinting his words here:

The Liturgy today presents us with the parable of the Prodigal Son. The parable is followed by two others; the shepherd who finds his lost sheep, and the woman who finds her lost coin. What kind of reaction do we find in the shepherd and the woman after finding what they lost? Joy! They invite us to rejoice with them! What does the Lord say at the end of each of these parables? He says that "there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, than over ninety-nine righteous who need no repentance."

These parables were a witness against the scribes and Pharisees who were undoubtedly scandalized at Jesus intermingling with sinners. For us gathered here today it is good news because we can allow our human weaknesses to become opportunities for an experience in grace and forgiveness from God. All of us are accepted in God's economy of salvation.

Peace be with you
