The Pentagon said Tuesday that a missile launch off the southern coast of California remained “unexplained” and that its mysterious origins meant that it was not possible to rule out any threat to the homeland, Fox News Channel reported.Earlier Tuesday, NORAD North American Aerospace Defense Command and NORTHCOM United States Northern Command officials told Fox there was no threat, but Pentagon Spokesman Col. Dave Lapan would not confirm that because the military does not know what the missile was or where it came from.

From Fox News
A local CBS affiliate in Los Angeles on Monday evening captured on video the image of the “spectacular” projectile flying about 35 miles out to sea, west of Los Angeles and north of Catalina Island.
The Missile Defense Agency told Fox News it did not launch any test missile Monday night that could explain the dramatic images. The Navy and the Air Force
were also unable to offer an explanation.
Lapan said it does not appear that whatever was flying was part of a “regularly scheduled missile test.” He noted that before a missile test, notifications are sent to mariners and airmen. This does not appear to be the case here.
At this point, the military is working only with video taken from the local news camera, and NORAD and Northcom apparently were not able to detect the contrail on their own.
It appears from the video, Lapan said, the object was launched from the water and not U.S. soil, though at this point there is no way to be certain.

What's wrong with this story? First of all, where are our defenses? What do they mean by "it appears that the object was launched from the sea!"? This is scary and an outrage! We are supposed to know who is sailing off our shores. Where were the sonar and radar aircraft and ships protecting our coast? When I was in the Navy, 50 years ago, we petrolled the east Coast for Russian Submarines. We flew S2F Sonar planes up and down the coast on search missions. Don't we do this anymore? With all the high tech stuff, and satellites and laser beams to track our cell phone use, don't tell me no one knows about this and who set off the rocket. If it was one of our own, who made an error, tell us! If it was an enemy sub, also tell us! We need to know the truth!
