The Holy Innocents by Colleen Spiro - Ft. Myers Catholicism

Matthew 2:1-18 tells the story of the Holy Innocents.

It seems that Herod, the king of Judea, was very insecure and constantly worried about his throne being taken away. When the three wise men came and told King Herod that they were looking for the newborn king of the Jews, Herod was most interested in finding out who and where this “king was.”

The magi found Jesus but were told by an angel to avoid Herod and so they went home a different way. An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him to take Jesus and Mary to Egypt to escape Herod who wanted to destroy Jesus.

Herod became furious when he realized that the magi had deceived him and he ordered the death of all boys in Bethlehem and surrounding areas who were 2 years old and younger.

Those children are the Holy Innocents. The Feast Day of the Holy Innocents is on December 28 and they are the patron saints of babies.

As reported in the diocesan newsletter, the Diocese of Venice in Florida will hold a Mass of Remembrance on December 28th for all children born and unborn “who left the world too soon.” It will be held in 3 locations in the diocese. The closest one to Fort Myers is St. John the Evangelist in Naples and Mass will be held at 9 am.
