MANILA, Philippines – The owner of an image of the Immaculate Conception statue of the Virgin Mary was forced to hide the statue after it began to attract a large crowd in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

The owner, Lucy Barba, believes that the statue of the Virgin Mary “weeps.”

Barba said a large crowd began gathering at the front of her antique shop in Vigan, where the statue was displayed.

“’Yung santo na ‘yon pinalimos noong July. May opening kami ng Solidarity Day nitong September 3. May trade fair kami, usually nagdi-display kami ng furnitures,” she said.

Witnesses said they saw the statue shed tears.

One witness, identified as Robert Reno, was able to capture a photograph of the incident.

“Nung pumunta ako nakita ko ang dami ng tao sa showroom ko, may luha daw. Nakita ko pinapahid na nila ‘yung mga panyo nila,” said Barba.

Barba said she even touched the tears.

“Pinahawak sa akin, nahawakan ko ‘yung luha niya,” she said.

Barba decided to hide the statue to avoid starting a commotion among residents and tourists in the area.

Barba said she believes that the Virgin Mary is trying to convey a message.

“May message siya sa atin siguro,” she said.

The Church has yet to comment on the alleged phenomenon.
