Catholic Ireland takes away the pope's triple-A

Vatican Diary / Catholic Ireland takes away the pope's triple-A

Dublin recalls its ambassador from Rome and downgrades its diplomatic connection with the Holy See. But in the meantime, other countries have decided to reinforce it. And these include the United Kingdom

VATICAN CITY, November 5, 2011 – Ireland's decision to shut down its embassy to the Holy See, in addition to those in Iran and East Timor, smacks of historical paradox.

A nation that has always placed a great deal of stress on its Catholic identity and on its historical connection with the Holy See – partly in opposition to the Protestant English crown that dominated it for centuries, not without oppression – now finds itself with a diplomatic connection with the Vatican of a lower rank than the one maintained by the United Kingdom, which did not establish full relations with the see of Peter until 1982.
