Dear Children of Medjugorje, praised be Jesus and Mary!

1. On November 2, 2011, Mirjana received her monthly apparition at the Blue Cross, surrounded by a big crowd. She gave us the following message:

"Dear children! The Father has not left you to yourselves. Immeasurable is His love, the love that is bringing me to you, to help you to come to know Him, so that, through my Son, all of you can call Him ‘Father’ with the fullness of heart; that you can be one people in God’s family. However, my children, do not forget that you are not in this world only for yourselves, and that I am not calling you here only for your sake. Those who follow my Son think of the brother in Christ as of their very selves and they do not know selfishness. That is why I desire that you be the light of my Son, that to all those who have not come to know the Father - to all those who wander in the darkness of sin, despair, pain and loneliness – you may illuminate the way and that, with your life, you may show them the love of God. I am with you. If you open your hearts, I will lead you. Again I am calling you: pray for your shepherds. Thank you.“

2. The King was mistaken!

This metaphor is especially relevant the modern day:

Once upon a time there was a King who had four spouses. He loved his 4th spouse more than all the others. He offered her beautiful presents and took great care of her. He gave her the best of everything he had. He also loved his 3rd spouse and proudly introduced her to the neighboring Kings. But he was afraid that one day she would run off with another King. He also loved his 2nd spouse. She was his confidant: each time he had a problem, he talked to her about it. The King’s 1st spouse was his most loyal one; it was with her that he had built his kingdom.

One day the King fell gravely ill. While he was near death, he started thinking, “I have four wives, but when I die, I will be alone”.

So he called his 4th wife and told her: “I have loved you more than all the others. I have given you the best. Now I am going to die, would you like to come with me and be my companion forever?”

“Are you crazy?” She answered, before going away without another word. Her answer sunk painfully into the King’s heart like a sharp knife.

Then the King told his 3rd spouse: “I have loved you all my life. Now I am going to die.  Are you willing to follow me?”

“No,” she answered. “Life is too beautiful. After you die, I am going to remarry!” This answer surprised the King and made him quite sad.

He then said to his 2nd spouse: “I have always come to you in my difficult moments. And you have always helped me. Now I am going to die. Would you follow me? She answered: “I am sorry that I can’t follow you, but I promise you that I will arrange a nice funeral for you.”

The King was desperate. All his life, he had been mistaken about his wives’ feelings.

He then heard a voice saying, “I will go with you. I will follow you wherever you go”. It was his 1st spouse speaking. The King looked at her and he was ashamed: she was skinny, sick, and resigned. So he said, “It is you I should have loved more than all my other spouses when I was able to!”

Actually, each one of us has four spouses. Our 4th spouse is our body. Regardless of how much care we give it, it will leave us the day we die. Our 3rd spouse is our wealth and social status. When we die, we will take nothing with us. Our 2nd spouse is our family and friends. They are a great support to us, but when death comes, the only thing they can do for us is organize our funeral. Our 1st spouse is our soul, which we often forget and treat so badly. Yet it will be the only one to accompany us everywhere! Take the time to care for it! Keep it in good shape so that it can be beautiful and holy! Make it shine now and for ever!

3.  Continue fasting? Of course!  Many pilgrims, with all their good will, started fasting on bread and water on Wednesdays and Fridays, as Our Lady asked. Yet after some time, a few people gave up fasting. This is why we want to give here simple means to persevere in this excellent resolution. (Sick people are not requested to fast in the same way.)

First, we know that by practicing fasting, we answer an urgent call from Our Blessed Mother, and this is something! Hasn’t she been coming to us for 30 years to draw attention to the best means to have true peace? We can already work on the conviction that fasting has great power over the enemy; it allows the soul to govern the body and not the opposite.

Some people say that it is difficult to persevere. Effectively, fasting requires some willpower. But what is more difficult? Fasting following the instructions from Heaven, (the Jews used to fast twice a week), or repairing the damages caused in us by the unbound enemy? Out of the two efforts, fasting is the easier one to manage! Dear Father Slavko used to say, “When we have love, we find means. When we have no love, we find excuses.” (See PS4)

On a practical matter, remember that it is necessary to drink a lot of water on fasting days. It prevents headaches among other things. Very cold drinks are not recommended since hot drinks are better for digestion.

It is also healthier to eat whole-wheat bread, nourishing enough to give strength for working. The common white bread is not the best one, since the flour used has been processed therefore it is not very nutritious and it increases the blood sugar level. Integral or semi-integral bread makes fasting quite sustainable.

We are lucky to know a flour-miller near Ljubuski. We buy Organic flour from him in order to make our fasting bread. When time is short, we use a small bread machine that makes it in 3 hours. All you need to do is put the ingredients into the machine and the bread comes out baked.

Here are 2 recipes that will help you fill your machine (a purchase that is definitely worth it!). In the 1st one, we added raisins and almonds for those who want a more nourishing bread, although these additives were not called for by Our Lady. But it is better to enrich the bread than give up fasting. With this bread, you will bless the days of fasting!

A) For a bread loaf of about 1.5 pounds (with dry fruits) in the bread machine. On cycle for wheat or Integral:

1+1/2 cup of whole grain flour;  2 cups of white flour;  1 1/2 teaspoon of instant dry yeast;  1+1/2 teaspoons of salt;  1/4 cup of raisins (any other dry fruit);  1/4 cup of almonds;  1/4 cup of sunflower seeds;   2 tablespoons of muesli;   1+ 1/2 cup of warm water;   1/4 cup olive oil (or another oil).

Place dry yeast, flour, salt, raisins, almonds, sunflower seeds, muesli, water, and olive oil in bread pan. Turn on and set bread machine. Add water if dough does not come together or white flour if dough sticks to sides of pan.

B) For a bread loaf of about 1 lb (without dry fruits) in the bread machine. On cycle for Wheat or Integral:

1 1/4 cups warm water; 1/2 teaspoon salt; 1 1/2 cups whole grain flour; 2 cups white bread flour; 3 tablespoons olive oil; 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast; 1 cup warm water.

Place dry yeast, flour, salt, water, and olive oil in bread pan. Turn on and set bread machine. Add water if dough does not come together or white flour if dough sticks to sides of pan.
