Learn to humble yourselves...

Consecration Day 14

Dear Family of Mary!

Today we place ourselves at the feet of Mary, so that she can help us to achieve a knowledge of ourselves. During this week, we ask her to help us to see ourselves with God's eyes, truly understanding our weakness and our failings and then handing them over to her so that she can help us to change. Our reading for today suggests that we practice some sort of obedience, since it is a sure way to overcome our flesh, our pride and our willfulness. We all know that it is not easy to obey another. But Jesus modeled obedience, when he set aside his own life in obedience to the Father. We need to imitate Him and practice obedience.

I believe that in our everyday life we have many opportunities for obedience. If we work for someone, we need to obey the rules of our employer. If we drive a car we need to obey the traffic rules. When we buy and sell, we need to obey the tax rules of our governments. If we are parents we need to "obey" the needs of our children, putting our own needs second to their needs, and serving them when they call for our help. If we are spouses we have to obey the needs of our spouse. And if we are Catholics, we need to obey the simple rules of our church, like fasting one hour before Holy Mass, etc. These are all opportunities to obey a will outside our own, to learn humility.

Our reading for today:

Imitation of Christ: Book 3, Chapter 13
Of the Obedience of One in Humble Subjection,After the Example of Jesus Christ
My son, he who endeavors to withdraw himself from obedience, withdraws himself from grace; and he who seeks for himself private benefit (Matt. 16:24), loses those which are common. He who does not cheerfully and freely submit himself to his superior, it is a sign that his flesh is not as yet perfectly obedient to him, but oftentimes kicks and murmurs against him. Learn therefore quickly to submit yourself to your superior, if you desire to keep your own flesh under the yoke. For more speedily is the outward enemy overcome, if the inward man be not laid waste. There is no worse nor more troublesome enemy to the soul than you are to yourself, if you are not well in harmony with the Spirit. It is altogether necessary that you take up a true contempt for yourself, if thou desire to prevail against flesh and blood. Because as yet you love yourself too inordinately, therefore you are afraid to resign yourself wholly to the will of others. And yet, what great matter is it, if you, who are but dust and nothing, subject yourself to a man for God's sake, when I, the Almighty and the Most High who created all things of nothing, humbly subjected Myself to man for your sake?

I became of all men the most humble and the most abject (Luke 2:7; John 13:14), that you might overcome your pride with My humility. O dust! learn to be obedient. Learn to humble yourself, you earth and clay, and to bow yourself down under the feet of all men. Learn to break your own wishes, and to yield yourself to all subjection.

In the early days of the apparitions, Our Lady formed a prayer group of young people. Through Jelena Vasilj she gave instructions to the group. Here is one message given to the group:

Wednesday, February 20, 1985
(Ash Wednesday)
To Jelena:

"I give you an advice; I would like for you to try to conquer some fault each day. If your fault is to get angry at everything, try each day, to get angry less. If your fault is not to be able to study, try to study. If your fault is not to be able to obey, or if you cannot stand those who do not please you, try on a given day, to speak with them. If your fault is not to be able to stand a proud person, you should try to approach that person. If you desire that person to be humble, be humble yourselves. Show that humility is worth more than pride.  Thus, each day, try to go beyond, and to reject every vice from your heart. Find out which are the vices that you most need to reject. During this Lent, you should try and truly desire to spend it in love. Strive as much as possible."

In this simple message Our Lady gave a very good way to learn obedience. In our faults, we can strive to go against our own inclinations, and learn to obey love. In obeying love, we deny our own wills, and learn humility which is essential for holiness. "O dust! learn to be obedient. Learn to humble yourself..."

Ave Maris Stella
Hail, O Star of the ocean,
God's own Mother blest,
ever sinless Virgin,
gate of heav'nly rest.

Taking that sweet Ave,
which from Gabriel came,
peace confirm within us,
changing Eve's name.

Break the sinners' fetters,
make our blindness day,
Chase all evils from us,
for all blessings pray.

Show thyself a Mother,
may the Word divine
born for us thine Infant
hear our prayers through thine.

Virgin all excelling,
mildest of the mild,
free from guilt preserve us
meek and undefiled.

Keep our life all spotless,
make our way secure
till we find in Jesus,
joy for evermore.

Praise to God the Father,
honor to the Son,
in the Holy Spirit,
be the glory one. Amen.
