Consecration Day 15

Dear Family of Mary!

We are in Week One of our preparation for Consecration! We are at the feet of Our Lady, asking her to help us to gain a better knowledge of ourselves, so as to be able to love God more perfectly, and surrender to Him in all things. Today, we talk about dying to self. This is a very difficult subject, a very tricky idea. It can be used in an unhealthy way. But, through prayer and Our Lady's help, we can begin to learn to die to self. Our readings:

Luke 13:1 - 5 - Examples Inviting Repentance

"There were some present at that very time who told him of the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered thus? I tell you, No; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen upon whom the tower in Silo'am fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, No; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish."

True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Nos. 81 and 82
We Need Mary in order to Die to Ourselves

"Secondly, in order to empty ourselves of self, we must die daily to ourselves. This involves our renouncing what the powers of the soul and the senses of the body incline us to do. We must see as if we did not see, hear as if we did not hear and use the things of this world as if we did not use them. This is what St. Paul calls "dying daily". Unless the grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain and does not bear any good fruit. If we do not die to self and if our holiest devotions do not lead us to this necessary and fruitful death, we shall not bear fruit of any worth and our devotions will cease to be profitable. All our good works will be tainted by self-love and self-will so that our greatest sacrifices and our best actions will be unacceptable to God. Consequently when we come to die we shall find ourselves devoid of virtue and merit and discover that we do not possess even one spark of that pure love which God shares only with those who have died to themselves and whose life is hidden with Jesus Christ in him.
"Thirdly, we must choose among all the devotions to the Blessed Virgin the one which will lead us more surely to this dying to self. This devotion will be the best and the most sanctifying for us."

In the Gospel reading, Jesus makes it clear that unless we repent, we will not fair very well. Repentance means turning from the road we are choosing for ourselves, the life we "want" and turning towards the life and the road for which God has made us. Our independence, our willfulness takes us away from the joyful, fruitful life that God provides for us. But we don't see it that way, we rather think our own desires are best for us. And so, we have to repent. We have to deny our own desires.

In this early message through Jelena Vasilj Our Lady gives us a beautiful image of this turning.   It is an image of "dying to self" that shows the purpose!

Thursday, March 28, 1985
To Jelena:
"You all know the flowers. A flower must blossom and each part of the flower is very important. But there is a moment when the flower must wilt so that the seed can ripen, and after, when the seed is ripe, other flowers will come."

Jelena did not know how to explain this parable. But Fr. Tomislav explained: One finds in it the whole liturgy of this evening (Saturday, vigil of Palm Sunday); one must die in order to be able to rise again. We say sometimes that it is sad that a flower must wilt. But, if it does not wilt, it is not able to ripen the seed from where the other flowers come. If it does not die, life cannot multiply itself.

This recent message also calls us to die, to die to all that hinders life!

January 2, 2010 "Dear children, Today I am calling you to, with complete trust and love, set out with me because I desire to acquaint you with my Son. Do not be afraid, my children, I am here with you; I am next to you. I am showing you the way to forgive yourselves, to forgive others, and, with sincere repentance of heart, to kneel before the Father. Make everything die in you that hinders you from loving and saving, that you may be with Him and in Him. Decide for a new beginning, a beginning of sincere love of God Himself. Thank you."

Our Lady explains things so well! At her feet we are secure!

Ave Maris Stella
Hail, O Star of the ocean,
God's own Mother blest,
ever sinless Virgin,
gate of heav'nly rest.

Taking that sweet Ave,
which from Gabriel came,
peace confirm within us,
changing Eve's name.

Break the sinners' fetters,
make our blindness day,
Chase all evils from us,
for all blessings pray.

Show thyself a Mother,
may the Word divine
born for us thine Infant
hear our prayers through thine.

Virgin all excelling,
mildest of the mild,
free from guilt preserve us
meek and undefiled.

Keep our life all spotless,
make our way secure
till we find in Jesus,
joy for evermore.

Praise to God the Father,
honor to the Son,
in the Holy Spirit,
be the glory one. Amen.

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
