Consecration Day 21

Dear Family of Mary!

Week 2, Knowledge of the Blessed Virgin Mary

In today's reading, St. Louis de Montfort discusses what our relationship with Our Lady might be like. She is such a gift to us, so full of virtue and grace! Do we know how to respond to her, to her love for us, to her presence with us? He suggests three possibilities.

The Secret of Mary: Nos. 23-24
True Devotion to Our Blessed Lady

If we would go up to God, and be united with Him, we must use the same means He used to come down to us to be made Man and to impart His graces to us. This means is a true devotion to our Blessed Lady. There are several true devotions to our Lady: here I do not speak of those which are false. The first consists in fulfilling our Christian duties, avoiding mortal sin, acting more out of love than with fear, praying to our Lady now and then, honoring her as the Mother of God, yet without having any special devotion to her. The second consists in entertaining for our Lady more perfect feelings of esteem and love, of confidence and veneration. It leads us to join the Confraternities of the Holy Rosary and of the Scapular, to recite the five or the fifteen decades of the Holy Rosary, to honor Mary's images and altars, to publish her praises and to enroll ourselves in her modalities. This devotion is good, holy and praiseworthy if we keep ourselves free from sin. But it is not so perfect as the next, nor so efficient in severing our soul from creatures, in detaching ourselves in order to be united with Jesus Christ. The third devotion to our Lady, known and practiced by very few persons, is this I am about to disclose to you, predestinate soul. It consists in giving one's self entirely and as a slave to Mary, and to Jesus through Mary, and after that, to do all that we do, through Mary, with Mary, in Mary and for Mary. We should choose a special feast day on which we give, consecrate and sacrifice to Mary voluntarily lovingly and without constraint, entirely and without reserve: our body and soul, our exterior property such as house, family and income, and also our interior and spiritual possessions: namely, our merits, graces, virtues, and satisfactions.

I must admit I have lived the first two types of devotion to Mary for the most part of my life. I also have lived a 4th possibility, which is no relationship with Our Lady at all (many years ago, sad to say)! That is why this consecration we are praying is such a great grace for me!! Through Our Lady's presence in Medjugorje, I have been drawn deeper and deeper into total consecration. It has been a long process, a process that I am finding to be exquisitely beautiful and fruitful.  And it wouldn't have happened without these extraordinary apparitions, through which Mary comes to us in Medjugorje in such a tangible way that we really begin to know her!!

But what is St. Louis de Montfort getting at when he describes True Devotion as a giving of our entire selves, body, soul, memory, emotions, everything, to Our Lady.  Why is this so necessary?  And what does it say about Our Lady?

I think it says one thing, that Our Lady is the most trust-able person in the universe (outside of Jesus, her Son).  It is a way of showing us that there is nothing that we need to hold back from her because she is completely trustworthy.  She will never stop loving us.  She will never abandon us.  She will never betray us, or hurt us in any way.  That is what True Devotion really tells us.  Mary is the safest friend and companion we will ever have.  And if we entrust oursevles to her, she will bring us into a union with her Son that will knock our socks off!  We will meet Jesus in her heart, and find there our God and our brother, who loves us completely.

This is what I get from True Devotion, an invitation into the safest and most loving relationship I will ever know.

Our Lady has spoken to us in her messages about consecration to her heart. These messages confirm her desire to receive our consecrations. She is excited about our decision to follow her!! She wants us to trust her, and enter into her loving heart where we will be healed of all our wounds, our betrayals and our sins.  She wants to be our true friend and mother.  Consecration is the way into her heart.

May 17, 1984 "Dear children! Today I am very happy because there are many who want to consecrate themselves to me. Thank you. You have not made a mistake. My Son, Jesus Christ, wishes to bestow on you special graces through me. My Son is happy because of your dedication. Thank you for having responded to my call."

November 27, 1986 "Dear children! Again today I call you to consecrate your life to me with love, so I am able to guide you with love. I love you, dear children, with a special love and I desire to bring you all to Heaven unto God. I want you to realize that this life lasts briefly compared to the one in Heaven. Therefore, dear children, decide again today for God. Only that way will I be able to show how much you are dear to me and how much I desire all to be saved and to be with me in Heaven. Thank you for having responded to my call."

August 25, 1997 "Dear children! God gives me this time as a gift to you, so that I may instruct and lead you on the path of salvation. Dear children, now you do not comprehend this grace, but soon a time will come when you will lament for these messages. That is why, little children, live all of the words which I have given you through this time of grace and renew prayer, until prayer becomes a joy for you. Especially, I call all those who have consecrated themselves to my Immaculate Heart to become an example to others. I call all priests and religious brothers and sisters to pray the rosary and to teach others to pray. The rosary, little children, is especially dear to me. Through the rosary open your heart to me and I am able to help you. Thank you for having responded to my call."

Special graces come to us from Jesus, through Mary! Special love from Mary is made available for us. The path of salvation is opened up for us through the gift of Our Lady's presence. We have only to become more and more given over to Our Lady, as a child with its mother. In that trusting and open relationship, we will receive all we need to defeat the enemy in our lives and bring about the Kingdom of Heaven in our hearts. And through our lives of total consecration to our beautiful Mother, others will find an example of what true happiness looks like and they will want to join us. We will become doorways for our brothers and sisters to enter into Mary's love.

Ave Maris Stella
Hail, O Star of the ocean,
God's own Mother blest,
ever sinless Virgin,
gate of heav'nly rest.

Taking that sweet Ave,
which from Gabriel came,
peace confirm within us,
changing Eve's name.

Break the sinners' fetters,

Chase all evils from us,
for all blessings pray.

Show thyself a Mother,

born for us thine Infant
hear our prayers through thine.

free from guilt preserve us
meek and undefiled.

Keep our life all spotless,
make our way secure
till we find in Jesus,
joy for evermore.

Praise to God the Father,
honor to the Son,
in the Holy Spirit,

St. Louis De Montfort's Prayer to Mary

Hail Mary, beloved Daughter of the Eternal Father! Hail Mary, admirable Mother of the Son! Hail Mary, faithful spouse of the Holy Spirit! Hail Mary, my dear Mother, my loving Mistress, my powerful sovereign! Hail my joy, my glory, my heart and my soul! You are all mine by mercy, and I am all yours by justice. But I am not yet sufficiently yours. I now give myself wholly to you without keeping anything back for myself or others. If you still see in me anything which does not belong to you, I beseech you to take it and to make yourself the absolute Mistress of all that is mine. Destroy in me all that may be displeasing to God, root it up and bring it to nought; place and cultivate in me everything that is pleasing to you.

May the light of you faith dispel the darkness of my mind; may your profound humility take the place of my pride; may your sublime contemplation check the distractions of my wandering imagination; may your continuous sight of God fill my memory with His presence; may the burning love of your heart inflame the lukewarmness of mine; may your virtues take the place of my sins; may your merits be my only adornment in the sight of God and make up for all that is wanting in me. Finally, dearly beloved Mother, grant, if it be possible, that I may have no other spirit but yours to know Jesus and His divine will; that I may have no other soul but yours to praise and glorify the Lord; that I may have no other heart but yours to love God with a love as pure and ardent as yours. I do not ask you for visions, revelations, sensible devotion or spiritual pleasures. It is your privilege to see God clearly; it is your privilege to enjoy heavenly bliss; it is your privilege to triumph gloriously in Heaven at the right hand of your Son and to hold absolute sway over angels, men and demons; it is your privilege to dispose of all the gifts of God, just as you will.

Such is, O heavenly Mary, the "best part," which the Lord has given you and which shall never be taken away from you-and this thought fills my heart with joy. As for my part here below, I wish for no other than that which was yours: to believe sincerely without spiritual pleasures; to suffer joyfully without human consolation; to die continually to myself without respite; and to work zealously and unselfishly for you until death as the humblest of your servants. The only grace I beg you to obtain for me is that every day and every moment of my life I may say: Amen, so be it to all that you did do while on earth; Amen, so be it to all that you are now doing in Heaven; Amen, so be it-to all that you are doing in my soul, so that you alone may fully glorify Jesus in me for time and eternity. Amen.

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
