Consecration Day 22

Dear Family of Mary!

Our reading for today:

True Devotion To the Blessed Virgin Mary: Nos. 106-110
Marks of authentic devotion to our Lady
106. First, true devotion to our Lady is interior, that is, it comes from within the mind and the heart and follows from the esteem in which we hold her, the high regard we have for her greatness, and the love we bear her.

107. Second, it is trustful, that is to say, it fills us with confidence in the Blessed Virgin, the confidence that a child has for its loving Mother. It prompts us to go to her in every need of body and soul with great simplicity, trust and affection.

108. Third, true devotion to our Lady is holy, that is, it leads us to avoid sin and to imitate the virtues of Mary. Her ten principal virtues are: deep humility, lively faith, blind obedience, unceasing prayer, constant self-denial, surpassing purity, ardent love, heroic patience, angelic kindness, and heavenly wisdom.

109. Fourth, true devotion to our Lady is constant. It strengthens us in our desire to do good and prevents us from giving up our devotional practices too easily. It gives us the courage to oppose the fashions and maxims of the world, the vexations and unruly inclinations of the flesh and the temptations of the devil. Thus a person truly devoted to our Blessed Lady is not changeable, fretful, scrupulous or timid.

110. Fifth, true devotion to Mary is disinterested. It inspires us to seek God alone in his Blessed Mother and not ourselves. The true subject of Mary does not serve his illustrious Queen for selfish gain. He does not serve her for temporal or eternal well-being but simply and solely because she has the right to be served and God alone in her.

I love these characteristics of True Devotion to Mary! They are so beautiful! For instance, it is so important that our actions flow from our hearts, from our inner life of prayer and meditation. This means that our devotion will be wholehearted and true!

I also love that our devotion will fill us with confidence in Our Lady. Here is a beautiful email I just received about entrusting everything to Mary...

I have to share a special grace that I received that is a fruit of re-consecrating my heart to Mary.  I needed to go to reconciliation this evening before our 5:30 Mass and I had something to confess that was embarrassing, so I asked Our Lady if she would go with me and hold my hand.  I knew that she was with me and the grace received was remarkable and I wasn't embarrassed.  Our Lady is such a good Mother!  I am so grace-filled with this journey that we have embarked together on the spiritual sea.  (Sandy)

This simple example of trustful surrender to Mary has filled me with such joy! This is exactly what St. Louis de Montfort is describing! Like children, we place ourselves in Mary's hands, and she will help us in everything.

And I find that living the messages of Our Lady of Medjugorje make the other marks of True Devotion so possible. Our Lady speaks to us of virtue, of constant prayer, of keeping our eyes focused on Jesus, of not being swayed like branches in the wind. Her messages surround us with support in living our consecration to her. And with such a Mother, who would want to live for anyone else?

The August 2, 2013 message says so much about our True Devotion. Let's pray through it today:

"Dear children, If only you would open your hearts to me with complete trust, you would comprehend everything. You would comprehend with how much love I am calling you; with how much love I desire to change you, to make you happy; with how much love I desire to make you followers of my Son and give you peace in the fullness of my Son. You would comprehend the immeasurable greatness of my motherly love. That is why, my children, pray because through prayer your faith grows and love is born, the love along which even the cross is not unendurable because you do not carry it alone. In union with my Son you glorify the name of the Heavenly Father. Pray, pray for the gift of love, because love is the only truth: it forgives everything, it serves everyone and it sees a brother in everyone. My children, my apostles, great is the trust that the Heavenly Father has given you through me, His handmaid, to help those who do not know Him, that they may reconcile with Him and follow Him. That is why I am teaching you love, because only if you have love will you be able to respond to Him. Again I am calling you to love your shepherds and to pray that, at this difficult time, the name of my Son may be glorified under their guidance.  Thank you." (August 2, 2013)

Let's open our hearts in complete trust! We need to comprehend the great things God is doing for us through Our Lady in these days!

Ave Maris Stella
Hail, O Star of the ocean,
God's own Mother blest,
ever sinless Virgin,
gate of heav'nly rest.

Taking that sweet Ave,
which from Gabriel came,
peace confirm within us,
changing Eve's name.

Break the sinners' fetters,
make our blindness day,
Chase all evils from us,
for all blessings pray.

Show thyself a Mother,
may the Word divine
born for us thine Infant
hear our prayers through thine.

Virgin all excelling,
mildest of the mild,
free from guilt preserve us
meek and undefiled.

Keep our life all spotless,
make our way secure
till we find in Jesus,
joy for evermore.

Praise to God the Father,
honor to the Son,
in the Holy Spirit,
be the glory one. Amen.

St. Louis De Montfort's Prayer to Mary

Hail Mary, beloved Daughter of the Eternal Father! Hail Mary, admirable Mother of the Son! Hail Mary, faithful spouse of the Holy Spirit! Hail Mary, my dear Mother, my loving Mistress, my powerful sovereign! Hail my joy, my glory, my heart and my soul! You are all mine by mercy, and I am all yours by justice. But I am not yet sufficiently yours. I now give myself wholly to you without keeping anything back for myself or others. If you still see in me anything which does not belong to you, I beseech you to take it and to make yourself the absolute Mistress of all that is mine. Destroy in me all that may be displeasing to God, root it up and bring it to nought; place and cultivate in me everything that is pleasing to you.

May the light of you faith dispel the darkness of my mind; may your profound humility take the place of my pride; may your sublime contemplation check the distractions of my wandering imagination; may your continuous sight of God fill my memory with His presence; may the burning love of your heart inflame the lukewarmness of mine; may your virtues take the place of my sins; may your merits be my only adornment in the sight of God and make up for all that is wanting in me. Finally, dearly beloved Mother, grant, if it be possible, that I may have no other spirit but yours to know Jesus and His divine will; that I may have no other soul but yours to praise and glorify the Lord; that I may have no other heart but yours to love God with a love as pure and ardent as yours. I do not ask you for visions, revelations, sensible devotion or spiritual pleasures. It is your privilege to see God clearly; it is your privilege to enjoy heavenly bliss; it is your privilege to triumph gloriously in Heaven at the right hand of your Son and to hold absolute sway over angels, men and demons; it is your privilege to dispose of all the gifts of God, just as you will.

Such is, O heavenly Mary, the "best part," which the Lord has given you and which shall never be taken away from you-and this thought fills my heart with joy. As for my part here below, I wish for no other than that which was yours: to believe sincerely without spiritual pleasures; to suffer joyfully without human consolation; to die continually to myself without respite; and to work zealously and unselfishly for you until death as the humblest of your servants. The only grace I beg you to obtain for me is that every day and every moment of my life I may say: Amen, so be it to all that you did do while on earth; Amen, so be it to all that you are now doing in Heaven; Amen, so be it-to all that you are doing in my soul, so that you alone may fully glorify Jesus in me for time and eternity. Amen.

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
