They are called Servants of Mary, Ministers to the Sick and one of their convents in the United States can be found in the Bronx. On July 29th, these Sisters received a visit from Archbishop Nikola Eterovic, Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops. H2onews accompanied the Archbishop to the Eucharist he celebrated with these religious who welcomed him to their home. The Servants of Mary were founded in Madrid, Spain in 1851 by St. Maria Soledad Torres Acosta. Today they are 2,000 Sisters with 128 convents spread throughout the world, who minister to the sick physically and spiritually. Their dedication to the sick and suffering is inspired by Jesus' phrase: "I was sick and you visited me" (Matthew 25:36). Their work, many times carried out throughout the night, is to accompany sick people and their families, seeing this service as a mission of love.
