“First-come, first-served”
A Thanksgiving Mass in honor of Los Angeles Coadjutor Archbishop Jose H. Gomez is scheduled this Sunday, June 27, at St. Catherine of Sienna parish in Reseda. On April 6, Archbishop Petro Sambi, apostolic nuncio to the United States, announced that Pope Benedict XVI had named Archbishop Gomez as Coadjutor Archbishop of Los Angeles. Archbishop Gomez, 58, will succeed current archbishop, Cardinal Roger Mahony, 74, when he retires next year. Before being named coadjutor of Los Angeles, Archbishop Gomez served as Archbishop of San Antonio from 2004 to 2010. He served as Auxiliary Bishop of Denver from 2001-2004. “The Parishes of Deanery 5 (San Fernando Valley) welcome everyone to a Thanksgiving Mass in honor of Coadjutor Archbishop Jose Gomez,” said an emailed announcement of the event. “It will be held on Sunday, June 27, at 5:00 p.m. A reception will follow at 7:15 p.m. The mass and reception will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Reseda.” “The mass will be held outdoors in their area called ‘Field of Dreams,’” said the announcement. “There will be limited tickets available for handicapped seating and reserved seating; and unlimited tickets for general seating (first-come, first-served chairs, with the option for guests to bring blankets and sit on the lawn). Priests and deacons are welcome to be vested concelebrants. To obtain tickets, and for any clergy to confirm attendance, please call the Parish at (818) 343-2110. Reserved seating is limited, so early calls are appreciated.” The parish is located at 18115 Sherman Way in Reseda, a community in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley. Archbishop Gomez was born in Monterrey, Mexico, on Dec. 26, 1951. “He attended the National University of Mexico where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting,” said a news release issued April 6 by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. “In college he joined Opus Dei, an institution founded by Saint Josemaria Escrivá to help people turn their work and daily activities into occasions for growing closer to God, serving others and improving society… Archbishop Gomez studied theology in Rome and at the University of Navarre in Spain, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in theology and a doctorate in moral theology. He was ordained a priest of Opus Dei, August 15, 1978, in Torreciudad, Spain. After ordination he pursued pastoral work with college and high school students in Spain and Mexico. In 1987, he was sent to what was then the Diocese of Galveston-Houston to minister for Opus Dei in several capacities in Texas. He became a U.S. citizen in 1995.” From http://www.calcatholic.com/
