"Dear children!
God the Father is sending me to show you the way of salvation, because He, my children, desires to save you and not to condemn you. That is why I, as a mother, am gathering you around me, because with my motherly love I desire to help you to be free of the dirtiness of the past and to begin to live anew and differently. I am calling you to resurrect in my Son. Along with confession of sins renounce everything that has distanced you from my Son and that has made your life empty and unsuccessful. Say 'yes' to the Father with the heart and set out on the way of salvation to which He is calling you through the Holy Spirit. Thank you. I am especially praying for the shepherds, for God to help them to be alongside you with a fullness of heart." (May 2, 2011)

This message is all about conversion.  Our Lady calls us to get free of our past, of all that keeps us from Jesus, from all that divides us from the life of God.  She desires that we set out on the way of salvation.  These are familiar words.  This has been her call since 1981, when she first began to appear in Medjugorje.  But they haven't lost their urgency or their potency.  We needed to respond to this call in 1981, and we need to respond to it again today.  This is our task on earth, to turn towards God.

This weekend we celebrated Divine Mercy Sunday.  On this day the Lord pours out His grace upon us to free us from all sin and to help us to turn towards Him in trust and joy.  Jesus told St. Faustina:

My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy.  I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners.  On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open.  I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls, and especially for poor sinners.  On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open.  I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of My Mercy.  The soul that will go to confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.  On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened.  Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet.  My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity.  Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of My most tender mercy.  Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My love and mercy throughout eternity.  The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness.  It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter.  Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy." (Diary, 699)

Sunday was the Day of Divine Mercy!  It was also the Day of the Beatification of Pope John Paul II, who was the champion of Divine Mercy.  He gave us this Feast in 2000, when he canonized St. Faustina.  He knew that aching Mankind needed this Feast more than ever before.

Sunday was also the day that American troops carried out a dangerous mission into Pakistan. They discovered the hiding place of Osama Bin Laden, and they killed him.  It was the end of ten years of searching for justice. The man who had waged a campaign in which thousands of innocent people died finally met his end.

In praying about these three events, coinciding on Divine Mercy Sunday, it dawned on me that they might belong together.  Possibly they were one piece.  Blessed Pope John Paul II was the Mercy Pope.  He forgave the man who shot him in 1981.  He understood terrorism from the inside.  He also understood Mercy from the inside.  Could it be that on this Feast of Divine Mercy, as he was beatified, Blessed John Paul II was able to intercede for Osama Bin Laden before the Throne of Mercy, and obtain the grace of final contrition?  As Osama Bin Laden was dying, it could be that Blessed John Paul II rushed to his side, to escort him to the Throne of Mercy where he begged for Bin Laden's conversion and salvation?  Maybe this final grace of conversion was accepted by the man whom we would least expect?  Maybe history was overturned in that moment, and hate was turned to love, division into unity?  We will not know until all things are revealed.  But it is certainly possible.  Didn't Jesus say, "Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet.  My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity."  We can hope. We can pray that this day a real step towards unity and peace was made, through the intercession of Blessed John Paul II.  We can desire it and pray for it!

There may be many miracles in the days ahead.  God is pouring out His Mercy and Love upon the world.  We, who believe, must convert and pray, pray, pray!  That is our part in the miracles!

In Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and Blessed John Paul II,
