FEAST OF BLESSED MIGUEL AGUSTÍN PRO, PRIEST, MARTYR

If being Christian were a crime, would there be enough evidence to convict you? There was enough to convict Father Miguel Pro, a newly ordained Jesuit priest in Mexico during anti-Catholic persecution in the mid-1920s. He often “disguised himself as a beggar to baptize infants, bless marriages, and celebrate Mass. He would appear in jail dressed as a police officer to bring Holy Viaticum to condemned Catholics,” one account says, and took up collections for the poor in fashionable neighborhoods dressed as a businessman. Captured and facing a firing squad, like Christ he forgave his executioners. Jesus foresaw persecution and advised, “Be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves.” Miguel Pro did whatever it took to bring Christ to those who needed him.
