Dear Friends,
The star, the angels, the shepherds; Mary and Joseph, the Magi and the
oxen—so many ways to point to the mystery of Christmas. And always at
the center must be the child, the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes,
lying in a manger.
Blessed Cardinal Newman put it well in a Christmas sermon. Christmas reveals God to be Emmanuel, with us as “omnipotence in bonds.”
God who is mighty, all-powerful and eternal takes on the limitations of
human flesh. In Jesus Christ, God combines the two extremes of
greatness and smallness. Is this not in a small way echoed in the work
of the Catholic Medical Mission Board? With the help of large
organizations and corporations, with a multi-million-dollar budget, our
goal and focus is to bring care and healing power to mothers and
children around the world—ultimately to the new-born baby in Haiti and
Kenya and Peru.
In different ways, we try to imitate and share this boundless love of
God, which is focused on the infant Jesus. A Blessed Christmas to All!
