Holy card depicting the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. (Wikipedia)
The
liturgical year comprises three cycles: Sundays, the feasts of Our Lord
Jesus Christ, and the celebrations of the saints. The first great feast
of the cycle of the saints is that of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary,
Mother of Jesus Christ, celebrated on September 8th each year.
This feast is
very old. It was celebrated very early in Constantinople and Jerusalem,
but really took shape in Rome in the 7th century.
During this
celebration, the faithful are placed in the presence of the highest
recognized human holiness venerated by the Church: that of the Virgin
Mary. The texts read and the prayers sung on this occasion aptly
illuminate the meaning of the veneration that the Church has for Our
Blessed Mother Mary.
