Scripture
specifically mentions the Archangel Gabriel ("God's strength") who
seemingly was made aware of everything concerning the mystery of the
Incarnation and the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, the Archangel
Raphael ("God heals") and the Archangel Michael ("Who is like God?").
Along with the
Holy Archangels, the Church honors today all the good angels, including
Saint Michael who was appointed leader and model on the day of the
rebellion of Lucifer and the fallen angels. Michael was made not only
the Prince of Angels, but also Prince of the souls who must fill the
seats that remained empty after the demons’ fall.
Angels are
divided into nine Choirs and three Hierarchies: Angels, Archangels and
Virtues; Powers, Principalities and Dominions. Finally, higher still,
Thrones, Cherubim and Seraphim.
Their occupation
is to contemplate God, to love Him, praise Him and execute His Will for
the movement of the universe and for the salvation of men. They are
responsible for various missions on earth, regarding individuals,
families, parishes, dioceses, kingdoms and the whole Church. The Virgin
Mary is their Queen.
