After
the sign in the sky given on the night of January 26, 1938, Sister
Lucia, the visionary of the Virgin of Fatima, understood that the war
announced by Our Lady in her message of July 13, 1917, was near. On
several occasions, she informed the Bishop of Leiria, Reverend Bishop da
Silva.
In particular,
on February 6, 1939, seven months before the formal declaration of war,
Sister Lucia wrote to him to tell him of the imminence of war. And she
added a crucial point—Portugal would be spared because of the national
consecration made by all the bishops to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on
May 13, 1931. This special consecration of Portugal had been renewed on
May 13, 1938.
Sister Lucia’s
prediction was fulfilled to the letter. No Portuguese soldiers took part
in WWII and no foreign army ever occupied Portugal, even temporarily.
While all of Europe experienced five years of total war, only Portugal
enjoyed uninterrupted peace.
