Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! You are the ones responsible for the messages. The source of grace is here, but you, dear children, are the vessels which transport the gifts. Therefore, dear children, I am calling you to do your job with responsibility. Each one shall be responsible according to his own ability. Dear children, I am calling you to give the gifts to others with love, and not to keep them for yourselves. Thank you for having responded to my call."  (May 8, 1986)

Our Lady chose Medjugorje as her special parish, a place where she wanted to begin her school of love.  She chose to appear to six young people, giving them the privilege and responsibility of seeing her every day.  But she also chose the whole parish to be her special family, a family of prayer and love, through which she would reach out to millions of her other children, from all over the world.  Within the parish a prayer group formed, and in that group were two young girls who responded to Our Lady's presence so well that she was able to speak to them interiorly, by locution.  These two girls, Mirjana and Jelena, were instrumental in guiding the prayer group according to Our Lady's instructions in their locutions.  It was an extraordinary time of grace for Medjugorje.

During the Notre Dame Conference on Medjugorje 2011, Jelena was asked about her locutions and how they first began.  It is interesting to hear her response, all these years later:

Question: "Where were you when you had your first locution, which I guess is an inner voice in the depths of your heart?"

Jelena:  "I was in school and I was in my ordinary vocation.  It might be nice for students to know that Our Lady comes to school!  Even if you see some images of Our Lady from medieval art, you see that Our Lady is working when the angel comes to her.  God wants to meet us where we are.  It is very important that we are always open to His work.  For me it was there where I was at 10 years of age, in school.  

Question: "I heard you had a vision of an angel that helped you understand the importance of what was happening.  Can you tell us details of that experience with the angel?"

Jelena: "It was very simple.  At school I heard a voice.  I was wondering what time it was and I wanted the class to end...and I heard this voice that said, 'It is 10:20.'  But I didn't really think much about it then.  When I got home, I felt in my heart a call to pray every day at around 3:00 pm.  Later on I realized it was the hour of mercy.  The voice [the guardian angel] asked me to go to confession.  I think this is important!  Being 10 years old, what kind of sins can you have??   I think it is important to look for purity of heart in order to be in the presence of God, even when we are so small.  Then my angel promised me he would introduce me to Our Lady if I prayed every day at that certain time and I would listen to his directions.  And this is what happened about 10 days later. [Our Lady began to speak to Jelena.]   

 

Question:  "How many people were in your prayer group that, with the direction of this voice, you were encouraged to lead and who were they?"

 

Jelena:  "Actually there were many of us and the two of us [Jelena and Mirjana] were known by many people, so there were many of us.  There were many people with many gifts.  We had a very democratic system in our prayer group.  Our Lady didn't want us to have one person leading it all the time; we did have priests who helped us to understand.  But she wanted everyone in the prayer group to be leading the prayers.  She would always say, listen to each other because the Holy Spirit is always talking through even the people that seem to you to be the least important.  She was teaching us that deep respect for the others with whom we were praying.  We were around 60 which is a big number for a parish of about 3000 people.   Most of us were high school students."

I find it so amazing that Jelena does not see how unusual her experience of Our Lady is.  She speaks as if it is normal to hear Our Lady speak!  To this day, we do not know much about what Our Lady taught the prayer group.  Hopefully one day someone will write down and share some of Our Lady's teachings.  The little glimmers that come through Jelena's talks are inspiring.  For instance, Jelena said Our Lady would say, "Listen to each other because the Holy Spirit is always talking through even the people that seem to you to be the least important."  Wow!!!  That is incredible!  Listen to each other... (with the ears of our hearts)...because the Holy Spirit is always speaking... (Our God, the Holy Spirit is

always speaking words of life!!!)...through even the people that seem to you to be the least important... (Oh yes!!  Doesn't the Lord speak through children, and grandmothers, and strangers, and the poor?  He speaks through the simple much more freely than through the learned!).   And that is only one sentence. 

As we approach the 30th anniversary of the apparitions in Medjugorje, let's open the ears of our hearts to hear the Holy Spirit speaking to us through others, through Scripture, through our own prayer, and through our guardian angels.  Let's prepare for this wonderful anniversary!  We are living in a most amazing time of grace!
