Today, the Church celebrates the Feast of
St. Mark the Evangelist, author of the Gospel of Mark. From Scripture,
we know that Mark accompanied Sts. Paul and Barnabas on their journeys.
And from tradition, he is known to have been the secretary of St. Peter
and the founder of the Church in Alexandria, Egypt.
While Mark’s Gospel is the shortest, it
remains a lasting treasure for all those who seek Christ. He wrote his
Gospel to proclaim that Jesus was the Son of God who suffered and died
to save us from sin and death. When we read Mark’s Gospel, we learn that
to be a follower of Jesus, we, too, must be willing to make sacrifices,
to “let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Mark
8:34).
As with saints generally, St. Mark’s feast
day is the day of his death. On April 25, 68 A.D., he was dragged
through the streets of Alexandria for his faith in Christ. During the
entire time, he never ceased praising God and thanking Him for his
sufferings.

Please no anonymous comments. I require at least some way for people to address each other personally and courteously. Having some name or handle helps.
