Mary TV: December 4, 2020 Reflection - Reconcile with God...

Reconcile with God.

December 4, 2020
St. John Damascene

Dear Family of Mary!

Therefore, little children, work on yourselves…Work on and build peace through the Sacrament of Confession. Reconcile with God, little children, and you will see miracles around you…” (11/25/202)

Recently, I have been having unusual moments during the night when I will awaken to a significant memory. It seems I am being given a grace to look back one more time at some of my past sins. I always feel the enormity of those transgressions, but I also feel a certain honesty in the memory. It is as if I am being given different eyes with which to see myself. These eyes are very honest. There is no trying to shift blame or excuse myself. There is no strong emotion that would distract me from the evidence. It is a sober moment in which I can just evaluate my behavior honestly and admit my guilt.

I have taken all these sins to confession. But there seems to be a deeper work going on. A work of owning up completely to my sins. And once I admit them to myself without equivocation, I feel a flood of love from Jesus, who is usually nearby, waiting. I feel so much love being poured out upon me. I feel peace.

So, when I read the message for November 25, I immediately recognized in these words the grace I have been experiencing in the night. Jesus is helping me to reconcile with Him. And peace is being built within me. I can then take these sins to confession one more time, with complete peace, knowing I will be totally free of them.

Several of our shipmates have been sharing similar experiences. We all feel that we are being given a great grace, almost an illumination of conscience, in that we see ourselves in the light of God’s love, with no grey areas. We see as we are and are given contrition!!

Well, in the Breviary, the Second Psalm for Evening Prayer (Psalm 32) for Thursday, December 3, expresses very much what I am experiencing. We might pray it with all our hearts and thank the Lord for giving us the grace of forgiveness and reconciliation. He is our hope, as we own our pasts and face our futures.

Antiphon: The one who is sinless in the eyes of God is blessed indeed.

Psalm 32
They are happy whose sins are forgiven.

David speaks of the happiness of the man who is holy in God’s eyes not because of his own worth, but because God has justified him (Romans 4:6).

Happy the man whose offense is forgiven,
whose sin is remitted.
O happy the man to whom the Lord †
imputes no guilt,
in whose spirit is no guile.

I kept it secret and my frame was wasted.
I groaned all the day long
for night and day your hand
was heavy upon me.
Indeed, my strength was dried up
as by the summer’s heat.

But now I have acknowledged my sins;
my guilt I did not hide.
I said: “I will confess
my offense to the Lord.”
And you, Lord, have forgiven *
the guilt of my sin.

So let every good man pray to you
in the time of need.
The floods of water may reach high
but him they shall not reach.
You are my hiding place, O Lord;
you save me from distress.
You surround me with cries of deliverance.

I will instruct you and teach you
the way you should go;
I will give you counsel
with my eye upon you.

Be not like horse and mule, unintelligent,
needing bridle and bit,
else they will not approach you.
Many sorrows has the wicked
but he who trusts in the Lord,
loving mercy surrounds him.

Rejoice, rejoice in the Lord,
exult, you just!
O come, ring out your joy,
all you upright of heart.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm Prayer

You desired, Lord, to keep from us your indignation and so did not spare Jesus Christ, who was wounded for our sins. We are your prodigal children, but confessing our sins we come back to you. Embrace us that we may rejoice in your mercy together with Christ your beloved Son.

Ant. The one who is sinless in the eyes of God is blessed indeed.

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Mary TV: December 3, 2020 Reflection - As in the first days...

As in the First Days...

December 3, 2020
St. Francis Xavier, Priest

Dear Family of Mary!

By reading the Sacred Scripture you will discover Jesus' birth and joy, as in the first days which Medjugorje gave to humanity. History will be truth which, also today, is being repeated in you and around you.” (11/25/ 2020)

Our Lady spoke to us about history, about the truth that is found in history, in her message of November 25. She told us that we can find the same joy that was discovered at Jesus’s birth and that was also displayed in the first days of her coming to Medjugorje. She tells us it will be repeated in us and around us in these times as well. Because these are times in which God is revealing Himself to us as He did at Jesus’ Birth and at Our Lady’s first coming to Medjugorje. And that revelation will change us forever!

In the “Jesus Rosary” for this week, Frano Zubac describes the impact of Our Lady’s coming in 1981, as only a firsthand witness can!  His memories are powerful and help us to understand what Our Lady is telling us in her message.

I have transcribed below Frano’s opening comments during the “Jesus Rosary” for December 2, 2020. You can watch the video here: https://marytv.tv/jesus-rosary/

Frano’s memory of the first days in Medjugorje for “Jesus Rosary” for December 2, 2020:

I would like to tell you a little bit about the history of Hercegovina before the apparitions in Medjugorje took place and shortly after the apparitions took place. I would like to tell you the way in Hercegovina we who lived here survived and lived just before the apparitions.

The people produced tobacco and in Yugoslavia it was well known, as Yellow Gold – Tobaccos of Hercegovina. It was a yellow color, yellow gold. And everybody was involved in the production of tobacco. Every square inch of earth in Hercegovina was covered with tobacco plants and grapes (wine) too. The children of this region, school children, everybody was involved, particularly in the summer, picking the leaves of tobacco, taking it home and putting it up to dry, exposed to the sun. It was left up until Christmas time when the tobacco company would take it and give us some money.

It wasn’t enough money for the families, particularly the big families with many children. So, you could say that every second man of this region left the country, went to Germany and other western countries to work as laborers, to earn the money needed to raise their families and educate them.

My father went to Germany when I was the age of nine, my brother was five. We were waiting and waiting for him to come home. Vicka’s father, who had eight children, went to Germany and worked there thirty years, in order to raise them up, educate them. The mother and grandmother were here, and everybody raised tobacco.

So that was the normal environment of Hercegovina. And that is why Mirjana was sent down from Sarajevo to the village, to help her grandmother pick the leaves of tobacco daring the summer holidays.

Now I would like to tell you something I remember about Christmas trees. I told my children that in my childhood we could not cut down fresh Christmas trees, but we could only use a bush. It was only when my father brought back from Germany a plastic Christmas tree, that we had a tree in our house.

It was because the Communist Government was strictly against the cutting of Christmas trees, and against the celebration of Christmas in public, or the decorations in stores for Christmas. No, during that time here, nobody had any decorations, or preparations for Christmas in the public places, because the Communists ruled the state. Christmas doesn’t exist. They made sure that the children on Christmas Day were coming to school. In case someone was missing, they would send for the parents to come to the school, and they would shout at them.

That was the ideology of the society and the communists ruled. In 1980, Tito, the last Chairman of the Communist Party died. And in 1981 Our Lady appeared.

Just before I talk about the time of the apparitions, I would like to talk about Vicka and her family. I knew Vicka before the apparitions took place. As a young girl of 15 or 16, we laughed and joked together with her younger brothers and sisters, and she talked about (this was before the apparitions began) “Dynamo” – a football club. She was a great supporter of Dynamo, and I was too. And she said, “Tomorrow is Sunday, we are going to win! We will beat them!” You know the Croatian football club, Dynamo. And you can even see Jakov in a Dynamo shirt, supporting Dynamo at that time. Everybody supported Dynamo in this region.

So why do I mention that? Because they were just ordinary children.

And another thing she said, which I remember clearly, “Tomorrow is Sunday, and all these young people are going to have a Mass for the school children. And we have a new parish priest, pastor of Medjugorje. And he has Mass for one hour! That’s too long. One whole hour!!” That was Fr. Jose, the new pastor of Medjugorje. And that was her comment about Mass. She never, ever, talked about Our Lady, never, never mentioned the faith or anything like that. She was just an ordinary girl.

When the apparition took place, I met her afterwards and she was talking about the message, the first message, that really broke through the Communist State, and shook everyone:

“I have come to tell you God exists!”

In the whole ideology that the Communists had, God did not fit. Now you see the six children saying that Our Lady gave the message, “God exists!” That is why the Communists stood up to the destroy Medjugorje, block it, to stop it, because the children were giving testimony that they were meeting the Mother of God and they were giving testimony that God exists!

That was something that they could not easily gloss over, because for years and years they had been teaching at school that God does not exist. The Communist ideology. Now the combat started on the ground. But the Joy! This is what I want to say…the Joy that we felt, the Happiness, the Joy…it was felt by those people who accepted the apparition. For sure there would be obstacles from the people who didn’t accept or believe.

When Our Lady has said that History will be true, and she compares the apparitions with the Birth of Jesus! I read the Scripture about the Birth of Jesus, and similar things really happened there. The people who didn’t accept the Birth of Jesus were very nasty. Even Herod tried to kill the Baby Jesus. So similar things happened here. Those people who accepted the apparition were full of joy and tried to share the news with others. Without cost, with love and joy and happiness. And others tried to squash it down and threaten them like a dog for what they did.

I remember when I came from Germany and it was September, they told me that this evening there will be a meeting in the county hall, the Communists were organizing a meeting. Everybody was supposed to come. You had to go. So, I thought, Ok I want to see what they are about. Four or five “comrades”- the communist leaders- two who I knew, they were younger, and three of them older, were giving a talk about Medjugorje. They were saying that Fr. Jozo was trying to manipulate the children. They were saying it was dangerous to send the girls to the church because the priests would rape them. They said awful, awful things. What were they talking about??

They spread propaganda. That this was part of Croatian Nationalism. This would make the people poorer, unless we extinguished what was happening in Medjugorje. The Communists will never build a factory in that area, so we would be even more poor and treated like dogs. And nobody will support us. And no jobs for the young. It will be a catastrophe. It will be a financial catastrophe for Hercegovina. Nobody should go to Medjugorje. You must not go there. You must not support what is happening. You must not go to church.

Then one man from the next village, who was working in Germany, stood up. Of course, if you opposed them, you would be put in jail. But Elia stood up and said, “You can’t stop the people from going to church. It is in the constitution, it is the law, that everyone is allowed to go to church. How can you stop them?” And straight away they were asking who he was. And they found out that that man had married a Serbian lady and had been going to church in Germany every Sunday. But they couldn’t label him as a “nationalist” and they couldn’t do anything against him.

Then my young friends called the two younger “comrades” to come over and they started to sing a church song “there is one long road of faith and hope and peace”. And that was the answer of the young people to what the comrades were trying to impose on them, saying don’t go to Medjugorje. These Communists threw everything nasty under the sky at the apparitions, the visionaries. They said they are stupid, no one will ever marry the girls, they will never get married. They will never be employed. Forget it, they will never finish school because the schools belong to us. Whoever supports Medjugorje will have no jobs. No future here.

But Our Lady poured joy into the hearts of the people, and the people would walk to Medjugorje’s church through the fields, singing! Singing! Full of joy and happiness. And you couldn’t stop it. And slowly, slowly it started moving the way Our Lady wanted it. And slowly, slowly, through the messages that Our Lady is giving us, all of us even today, every month, she is trying to lead us and guide us. Prepare us.

It is now almost the 40th anniversary, and history is repeating itself. That story we heard long ago we compare it to when Moses took Israel from slavery in Egypt to the promised land. Forty years through the desert. Conversion, conversion, conversion through the desert. And Moses brought them to Mt Sinai and gave them the 10 commandments, the 10 pillars of our faith. And in a similar way, Our Lady is coming and bringing us messages of hope, messages of joy, the message that she is with us, that Heaven is with us. What Our Lady said, to feel the Heavenly Joy, we have to remember Jesus’ birth. What we prepare during this Advent is ourselves, through confession and through loving each other, so that peace will dwell in our hearts.

Mary TV: December 2, 2020 Reflection - Heaven's Time!

Heaven's Time

December 2, 2020

Dear Family of Mary!

''Dear children! This is a time of love, warmth, prayer and joy…” (11/25/20)

I must admit I didn’t expect Our Lady to say this. I would not call this “time” we are living in a time of love, warmth, prayer and joy. If we look around us, it seems to be anything but…

In our larger societies we seem to have more discord and even hatred than love, with political divisions everywhere. Due to Covid 19, instead of warmth, human warmth that is, we are encouraged to maintain distance from one another, stay home, alone, wear masks and basically stay put. Not very warm. And prayer, well many of us cannot even get to Holy Mass. Finally, joy seems to be dampened. There is a heavy oppression over the world right now.

And yet, Our Lady tells us, even announces to us that this is a time of love, warmth, prayer and joy!

Our Mother is very counter-cultural!! She comes from the culture of Heaven, where it is always the time for love, warmth, prayer and joy!! And she is bringing that culture to us. She is giving us a taste of Heaven on earth through her presence. And so, this time is a time of love, warmth, prayer, and joy precisely because Our Lady is with us!! She is here with us, now!!

Her presence will conquer the prevailing culture in the world, the culture that is having such a chilling effect upon our hearts and souls. She not only announces this time of love, warmth, prayer and joy, she actually gives us those very things.

Our Lady loves us. She told us: I am with you and intercede for all of you. Little children, do not forget that I love you with a tender love. (02/25/02)

She brings her motherly warmth to us: "Dear children! Open your hearts to the grace which God is giving you through me, as a flower that opens to the warm rays of the sun…” (04/25/14)

She teaches us to pray: Dear children, I beseech you to open yourselves and begin to pray. Prayer will be your joy. If you make a start, it won't be boring to you because you will be praying out of joy.(03/20/1986)

And she gives us joy: "Dear children! I desire to share my joy with you. In my Immaculate Heart I feel that there are many of those who have drawn closer to me and are, in a special way, carrying the victory of my Immaculate Heart in their hearts by praying and converting…” (08/25/2000)

Our Lady is bringing us into the Kingdom of Heaven, where there is so much love, warmth, prayer and joy, that we will never comprehend it completely. It will just increase and explode as we behold it! I think she is telling us that our true home is in Heaven and that the time we are in right now is Heaven’s time. We just need to say “yes” to it and let her guide us there.

Mary TV: December 1, 2020 Reflection - The Feeling of Heaven!

The Feeling of Heaven

December 1, 2020

Dear Family of Mary!

''Dear children! This is a time of love, warmth, prayer and joy. Pray, little children, for little Jesus to be born in your hearts. Open your hearts to Jesus who gives Himself to each of you. God sent me to be joy and hope in this time, and I am saying to you: Without little Jesus you do not have the tenderness or the feeling of Heaven which is hidden in the Newborn…” (November 25, 2020)

We are in the first week of Advent! And I feel my eyes and my heart turned towards the coming of Christ – with almost double vision. I am looking with longing for the first coming of Jesus in His Birth, remembered so lovingly in our collective memory as Christians, and at the same time gazing with ever increasing yearning for the Second Coming Christ, so powerfully promised by Jesus in the Gospels and the Book of Revelations. I feel the deep need for Jesus to return in His Glory. It overwhelms me at times.

And so, I find myself tearing my eyes away from the disturbing events of this world and fixing them with growing desire upon the Kingdom to come, the Heavenly Kingdom to which Jesus wants to bring us forever.

I want to share with you a short excerpt from a book written by Father William R Bonniwell, O.P. in 1958. I found this excerpt in the Magnificat for November 2020, p. 396. It describes so beautifully this desire I am feeling for Heaven. This is where our eyes should be gazing!

"When we arrive at our Father’s house, it will not be as a stranger…. There will be the resplendent throngs of angels and saints, our truest friends, who so many times interceded to God for us throughout our whole life. But of all this joyous, welcoming throng, there will be one who will give us a welcome that will be unique; it will be the welcome given us by that Mother whom Christ gave us on Mount Calvary, the Blessed Virgin Mary. She will greet us as only a mother can greet one of her children who, after a long and dangerous journey, has at last returned safely home.

"And then, our enraptured eyes will behold the beatific vision! By a special grace, called the light of glory, infused in our intellect, elevating and perfecting it, we shall be able to see almighty God face to face. We shall be transported with ecstasy at the vision of the beauty, glory, splendor, and perfection of the Lord God of Hosts, and beholding the glory of the Lord, we shall be transformed into his very image, from glory to glory, by the spirit of the Lord.

"The ecstatic rapture caused by this glorious beatific vision will never lessen, will never vary in its intensity, because God’s ineffable attributes are really and truly infinite, really and truly inexhaustible. Nor can we ever grow tired of gazing at this vision of Goodness and Love because our glorified body will not be susceptible of weariness; it can never grow tired. And so, every moment throughout the endless ages of eternity, every moment we shall be discovering more and more dazzling beauties and perfections in the God of infinite holiness. And in that marvelous vision of the Godhead our restless, unsatisfied heart will at last find perfect peace and perfect contentment, for it shall have finally found what it had been seeking all throughout life—perfect love. " (Fr. William R. Bonniwell, O.P. – from “What Think You of Christ?” 1958)

“There will be one who will give us a welcome that will be unique!” Our Mother, Mary!!! How can we think about anything else? We are the most blessed of children to have such a Mother. Let us allow her to lead us in the Advent – ever closer to her Son. Nothing else matters.

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
