The Holy Father addresses the Immaculata: You help us to believe in goodness
On Monday afternoon, in honor of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Benedict XVI fulfilled the tradition of bringing a tribute of flowers to the foot of the statue of the Blessed Virgin in the central square at Piazza di Spagna in Rome.
"Turning our gaze to Mary - the Pope said - we recognize in her the 'smile of God', the immaculate reflection of divine light. We find in her new hope even amid the problems and tragedies of the world."
Benedict XVI:
"O Mary, you indeed help us to believe with more confidence in the good, to take a risk on grace, on service, on non-violence, on the strength of truth, and you encourage us to stay awake, not to succumb to the temptation of easy escapes, but to face reality, with its problems, with courage and responsibility."
Benedict XVI then entrusted particularly the "little ones" of Rome, children, especially those seriously ill, disadvantaged youth, the abandoned elderly, the sick, immigrants "who have difficulty adjusting", and families who are struggling to make ends meet.
Finally, the Holy Father asked Our Lady to make all Christians "sentinels of the morning," the soul of the world during this difficult season. Your Beauty, he concluded, "assures us that the victory of love is possible."
