How did St. Joseph serve God?

Today, the Church celebrates St. Joseph the Worker. While his primary feast day is March 19, in 1955 Pope Pius XII added a second day on May 1, celebrated as the Memorial of St. Joseph the Worker.

Joseph was an ordinary man who worked with his hands. Yet he cooperated in an extraordinary way in God’s Divine plan for salvation.

Joseph was unfailingly obedient to God’s commands. When the angel told St. Joseph not to be afraid to bring Mary, his espoused wife, into his home, he obeyed. When he was warned to escape to Egypt, he obeyed. He continually provided for his family and protected them—even in the face of great danger.

Even though he was not the father of Jesus biologically, St. Joseph was a devoted father to the Word Incarnate, taking the place on earth of His Father in Heaven.

Joseph taught Jesus by example the importance of human work. Joseph’s actions showed love and responsibility through his labor and in his service of protecting and providing for the Holy Family. As patron saint of the Universal Church, St. Joseph continues his service to God and His Church. It’s comforting to know he is praying for us, interceding on our behalf, and watching over us.

We encourage you to read our special page dedicated to the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker, where we answer questions such as:

  • Why is St. Joseph the Worker on May 1?
  • What can we learn from St. Joseph?

  • What does St. Joseph help with?
  • Why is St. Joseph the sleeping saint?

On the page, we also offer a free eBook, Ora Et Labora (Pray and Work), to help you draw closer to Our Lord and grow in appreciation for the purpose and dignity of our daily work.

We pray this page and eBook will help increase your trust in God’s Divine Providence and give you peace amid the world’s chaos and uncertainty.

In Christ,

Your EWTN Family

I am with you to lead you towards Heaven!

St. Joseph the Worker

Dear Family of Mary!

The April 25, 2026 Message from Our Lady, Queen of Peace

"Dear children, I am praying for you and encourage you to a new life, a life in joy and prayer. May the Holy Spirit fill you, little children, with joy so that you may be like a spring of pure and drinkable water; that you, little children, may be, in God and with God, missionaries of love and peace. Your life is short here on earth and that is why I am with you to lead you towards Heaven. Thank you for having responded to my call." (With ecclesiastical approval)

We enter today into the month of May, which is a special month devoted to Our Lady!! I love this month!! I realize how very much I need Our Lady to be my mother and my teacher. And I feel so blessed to have come to know her!!

Our Lady tells us in the message we just received on April 25 that she is with us to lead us towards heaven!!! She is the very best of guides on that journey! Every day she guides us and protects us and teaches us and feeds us and corrects us gently, so that we can succeed at this life-long journey to Heaven. We would never make it without her.

Here is a litany that we can pray to thank her for all she has done, is doing, and will do to bring us safely home to Heaven!
