Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! Today I wish to call on all of you that in the New Year you live the messages which I am giving you. Dear children, you know that for your sake I have remained a long time so I might teach you how to make progress on the way of holiness. Therefore, dear children, pray without ceasing and live the messages which I am giving you for I am doing it with great love toward God and toward you. Thank you for having responded to my call."  (January 1, 1987)

Marija's closing words were about the school that Our Lady began in Medjugorje during those first years, even as the whole village faced many difficulties because of her coming.  The communist persecutions were intense, and the families had to make room for the pilgrims who began to arrive in ever greater numbers.  Here is how Marija describes it:

"Our Lady continued to guide us [after Fr. Jozo was arrested].  She started giving us messages.   For many years it was every Thursday, once a week.  She guided the parish in a special way, and she said that she wanted to lead a school on the way to holiness.  She wanted to lead us in this school of prayer.   She said she wanted us to read the Holy Bible and put it in our home and read it every day.

"In our home, in our families, we did not know what to do because we were afraid - the fathers, Vicka's mom, etc.  The communists said, 'That man who works in Germany [Vicka's father] when he comes back, we're going to take his passport, and he won't be able to go back, and you will die of hunger.'   They were threatening Vicka's mother whose husband worked in Germany.  Of course work in Germany was a benefit for all the people who lived in Medjugorje because they were so poor.  For three years Vicka's father could not return to Medjugorje because of the threat.  He knew that his daughter was seeing Our Lady.   It was great suffering for him.   But on the other side the same suffering was something that made us consecrate ourselves to God.  The only thing that we needed to do was pray and offer our hearts.

"We started living what Our Lady wanted through us.  And Our Lady said 'With prayer and fasting even wars can be stopped!'   She invited us to pray and become instruments of her peace; to pray for peace in our hearts, peace in our families, peace in the whole world.  So we did that.  And we never regretted everything we did.  I remember when we started fasting, which Our Lady asked us to do on Fridays on bread and water, my father would put a little money in the basket and when the missionaries would come, he would put that money that represented the food we didn't cook on those days, he would give it to the missionaries. And we would be told, 'This is for those in greater need than us.'  We had at the time very little money.  But Our Lady made our hearts grow so that we could give to others out of love.

Our families had accepted Our Lady.  We had accepted her messages.   And our families lived everything.  Because of that I would like to invite all of you, the ones who are here for the first time especially, to embrace Our Lady and bring Our Lady back to your homes.  Make use of this time for it is a time of grace, a time for prayer and for God and for Our Lady.   You will not regret to do what Our Lady has invited you to do, because without God you will not have a future.

"This was a message Our Lady gave when she said, 'Satan wants to destroy not just our lives but also the planet on which we live.'  Our Lady would like us to think, and live, heaven here on earth, where we respect life as a gift of God.  In a special way today when there are so many abortions, when there are so many children not born... Every single time I mention this I say that Vicka was one of eight brothers and sisters and had her mother decided to choose abortion, Vicka would not be here today to be a joyful presence and represent Our Lady.

"She [Vicka] had a beautiful experience of going to heaven with Jakov.  And Jakov said to Our Lady, 'Our Lady, please, don't take me.  I'm an only child.  Take Vicka, she has brothers and sisters.   Don't take me.'  And he was thinking about the suffering of his mother.  But Our Lady said, 'Don't worry,'and she took him by the hand and they went to heaven.  It was like a great place with many, many joyful people.  And they are all thanking God for everything he has done for them.   Then they went to purgatory and Our Lady invited them to pray for all those who are in purgatory, because they are suffering.  It is so big, and they need to go to God.  They want to be with God and so she asked us to pray for them.   They were also taken to hell.  They were able to see many persons.  Our Lady told them that it was their freedom, their choice that they went to hell.  They had chosen hell because of their own will.   Pray for those who are far from God, who do not believe in God, those who do not live according to God's commandments; who blaspheme.

And Our Lady also appeared to Mirjana who was with a prayer group to pray for those who do not know the love of God on the second of every month.  She asked her to be her extended hands.  There are so many who are so far [from God], who do not know God. And Our Lady wants us to pray for those people, that we witness to them, because we love all those who are lost.  We do not want them to be lost.  We want them to love God, to place God in the first place in their lives, because Our Lady said only in that way we will be able to find and live heaven here on earth... And in that way we will be able to go together to heaven.  Our Lady wants us all to live heaven here on earth, by loving and forgiving, by praying and by trying to do good with all of our strength... And Our Lady in that way said,'I want all of you to be my extended hands!'

"Our Lady wants to say that we are all important in her plan, that we are important.  We are important in her eyes.  And she counts on us.  She wants to say every time, 'Dear children, thank you for having responded to my call.'  In a special way I thank you in the name of Our Lady because your life is and should become a new light...a light of conversion, a life of holiness, until we come at the end to heaven.  May dear God bless you all!"  (Marija Pavlovic-Lunetti speaking on June 24, 2011 at St. James Church in Medjugorje)

"But on the other side the same suffering was something that made us consecrate ourselves to God."  Marija said a lot in this little sentence.  All the suffering and trails the visionaries and their village endured over the past 30 years has born a beautiful fruit.  It has moved, almost driven them to consecrate themselves to God.  Only in God have they been able to be strong, to witness to the truth, and to share the love of Our Lady that has come to them.  They have learned that life has no meaning outside of God.  And they live that truth.  You can feel it.  There is no nonsense in them.  They are witnesses to hope, just like John Paul II.

May we all do as Marija suggested: "I would like to invite all of you, the ones who are here for the first time especially, to embrace Our Lady and bring Our Lady back to your homes.  Make use of this time for it is a time of grace, a time for prayer and for God and for Our Lady.   You will not regret to do what Our Lady has invited you to do, because without God you will not have a future."
