In a pastoral letter issued recently to the lay and religious of his diocese, Nickless wrote that he has "no other desire" than to see the reforms of Vatican II implemented properly. However, he said, "It is crucial that we all grasp that the hermeneutic or interpretation of discontinuity or rupture, which many think is the settled and even official position, is not the true meaning of the Council."

The "hermeneutic of discontinuity," under the guise of the "spirit of Vatican II," sees "the Second Vatican Council as a radical break with the past," explained the bishop. However, "There can be no split ... between the Church and her faith before and after the Council."

"We must stop speaking of the 'Pre-Vatican II' and 'Post Vatican II' Church," continued Nickless, who agreed with Pope Benedict XVI that the Council's meaning "must be found only in the letter of the documents themselves." "The so-called 'spirit' of the Council has no authoritative interpretation," Nickless said. "It is a ghost or demon that must be exorcised if we are to proceed with the Lord's work."

The bishop said the cultural upheaval of the 1960s and 70s precipitated a shift in perspective about the Church, and it began to seem that "nothing was certain or solid" in its teaching or liturgy. "Sometimes," he said, "we set out to convert the world, but were instead converted by it. We have sometimes lost sight of who we are and what we believe, and therefore have little to offer the world that so desperately needs the Gospel."

This "hermeneutic of discontinuity," said Nickless, "emphasizes the 'engagement with the world' to the exclusion of the deposit of faith." "This has wreaked havoc on the Church, systematically dismantling the Catholic Faith to please the world, watering down what is distinctively Catholic, and ironically becoming completely irrelevant and impotent for the mission of the Church in the world," he said. "The Church that seeks simply what works or is 'useful' in the end becomes useless."

Bishop Nickless goes on to state that, "we have sometimes lost sight of who we are and what we believe, and therefore have little to offer the world that so desperately needs the Gospel."
"Our urgent need at this time is to reclaim and strengthen our understanding of the deposit of faith," writes Nickless. He adds that our mission is twofold — both within the Church (ad intra) and to the world (ad extra). He then sets forth a plan for "reclaiming and strengthening our faith, identity and culture as Catholics."

That plan includes the following:

1. A renewal of reverence, love, adoration and devotion to the Most Blessed Sacrament within and outside of Mass, regular reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

2. Strengthening catechesis on every level, beginning with and focusing on adults, with Sacred Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church as the primary sources of formation.

3. The protection and building up of holy families.

4. Fostering a culture where young people can more readily respond to the radical calls of ministerial priesthood and the consecrated life.

5. Acknowledging and embracing the missionary character of the Catholic Faith and the vocation of all Catholics to be, not only disciples, but also apostles.

Above all, Bishop Nickless calls the faithful to "great acts of renunciation."

Do not think of yourself and size yourself up in the eyes of man. You receive messages from Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Pray to only focus on the job at hand. You operate for love of Me. Do not waste your precious thoughts on making yourself look accepted in the eyes of man. Operate for love of God and you will treat men as you should. You waste such time sizing yourselves up and sizing up others. Love Me, Love your brothers. Do not give in to unloving thoughts. Operate only for love of Me.

Pray to be selfless. Pray, pray, pray, to die to self. This will keep you from pride. Pride is so powerful! It is the opposite of selflessness. It is a killer. It is a killer of the life and love of God that could exist in your heart. Do not evaluate yourself. Ask why you are acting. Are you acting to draw others to My love or are you acting to promote yourself? Pray for selflessness. Pray the Prayer for Union with Me. Do not give in to yourself. Discipline your thoughts. Pray for strength. Pray to be Christ-like. Pray for union with Me.

	Anglicans, Welcome Home! Pope Benedict has just invited the Anglicans into true communion, that is, communion with the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church! This is probably the best news I have heard all year! In a stunning move on Tuesday, the Holy Father issued a decree which created a provision allowing whole Anglican communities to become one with the Roman Catholic Church while retaining their own leadership and traditions. This move is unprecedented! In reality, it has been so long in coming, and I often wondered why acceptance of these willing communities was not done decades ago. Clearly, the progressive penchant for increasing "dialogue" and endlessly maintaining "diversity" made it impossible for them to switch sides, but now that barrier has been wiped away. It would seem that such willingness on the part of so many to rejoin the One True Church would be an opportunity of epic proportions for evangelization. Yet, it took a clear-thinking German Pope to reverse, in part, the damage that his countryman Martin Luther and King Henry VIII did to the unity of the Church almost 500 years ago. It is said that as many as 50 Anglican bishops and their communities around the world have asked for union with the Roman Catholic Church. There is one group of traditionalist Anglicans who number between 400,000 and 500,000 members and are expected to be the first to take the leap. I pray that many more will walk through the doors that lead to full Catholic unity! The real question is why anyone at all should stay in the Anglican Church. What is there to stay for? Anglicanism is basically committing doctrinal suicide, much the same way that England's population is about to implode due to their excessively high abortion and contraception rates and their hedonistic culture. All of that culture rot, of course, is symbiotic with the Anglican rebellion against traditional morality which slid precipitously from Henry's heresy to a homosexual hierarchy in a few short centuries. I am glad to see that some Anglicans are not taking it any more. Many have now realized that the only place they can find the unadulterated (no pun intended, Henry...) Truth is in the Church that Christ founded to be the "pillar and bulwark of truth" (1 Tim 3:15) for all ages. Those who stand on the Rock of Peter have solid footing for answering all the most important issues of any day. The holy English martyrs must be rejoicing in heaven knowing that they did not shed their blood in vain! In order to "manage expectations," however, we have to let the Anglicans know that they will not enter a perfect Church by any means, just a True Church, but that is the reality of this human institution with a divine soul. They may meet some who are still mired in the relativistic morals they thought they had left back in London. They may meet others who work precisely against the teaching of Christ while remaining within our chanceries. They will find a Church that badly needs a leadership overhaul and a good scouring of the Temple, but more important than any other consideration is that they will be in Christ's Church and they will now strengthen us in our fight for the Truth! We can only be overjoyed at their entrance. Their orthodoxy will amplify the voice of traditional Catholics hopefully enough to drown out the voices of dissent with our ranks. May the entrance of the faithful Anglicans serve as example of authentic faith to all who belong to our Lord! Now I have a request for all faithful Catholics who love unity. Whenever we hear of those from the Anglican Communion returning to the Church that Christ founded, please seek them out and give them a hero's welcome! I have already written to the community of Anglican nuns in Maryland that recently embraced the Ancient Faith, and it was such a joy to do so! Let us thank them and tell them how inspiring their journey is to us who were born into this Church. Their entrance into full communion reminds us of the precious gift we have been given in the authentic Catholic Faith. Let us also assure them that they are welcome in the Church to which Christ promised the very keys of the Kingdom of Heaven! Sincerely, Rev. Thomas J. Mary Vitamin for October 22nd   Topic: The Transfiguration   Quote: John Paul II "The mystery of light par excellence is the Transfiguration." Rosarium Virginis Mariae #21   Meditation: It is said in Holy Scripture that the privileged disciples "saw his glory." In the Transfiguration, the veil that hid the Lord's divinity was lifted.This vision was pleasing to St. Peter that he cried out, "Oh please do not let us ever leave this holy and sacred place! Let us build tents so that we may remain in your glorious presence!"   Within the walls of a family, there are few secrets, fewer veils to hide behind. Even great men of the world when home are unveiled in the presence of their immediate family.   Our Lady lived in the Lord's direct company from the time of the Annunciation. She had (and has) an unmatched relationship with the Trinity from the beginning of Her Immaculate Conception. One would have to suppose, the many veils that hid the glory of the Lord to the ordinary person were peeled away by the length and depth of their relationship. Had Our Lady grown accustomed to seeing past the ordinary veil that hid Him? Does the extraordinary unveiling of the Transfiguration give us a hint into Our Lady's ability to know her Son?   Resolution: Do I recognize the Lord in my family members? Do I try to live in the presence of God? Do I see inconveniences and struggles as a way of uniting myself to the Lord on the Cross? Do I pass my time with my eyes ever toward the tabernacle?   Today when I pass my religious image, I will ask Our Lady "Help me to notice the Divine Presence in my life. Lift the veil that hides Him from me."   Marian Vow: Today, I will recall the day of my Marian vow as a day of Transfiguration. The words were said on a specific day. Upon the completion of the ceremony, it seems one returns to his ordinary life with nothing changed. The unseen reality is now there is another soul to animate my actions because all belongs to her. This Marian character is not an act of devotion made or recited in a determined moment but is a soul found in each part of our body and presiding over our every thought, word and deed. Vision of Mary

May 2, 1994

R. The tenderness of Mary, holding the baby Jesus! See her as she looks so affectionately on her beloved Son, her eyes cast down in such love at her precious baby! See her as she holds the body of her Son after his brutal death on the cross. He is her beloved Son, the same beautiful baby she held. Now she looks with such love on Him Whom she once cared for as a baby.

Such sorrow, her Heart in such pain to behold her Beloved One on her lap! Pain, so intense that her Heart is pierced with a sword. Oh, Mary, Mary, I love you so. I thank you for all you suffered for us. You suffer for our sins because of all of your love for us and Jesus. I am sorry that I have made your suffering so much harder.

You, oh Mary, you, beloved mother, you mother us as you mothered Jesus. You mother us as babies and you mother us when we are suffering.

Message from Mary:

I cry for you, my child in your darkness. I cry for the beloved ones of my Son, Jesus. Turn their hearts back to His love. He is suffering for love of those in darkness. Turn their hearts to His intimate love. I am your mother and I thank you for responding to my call.

R. I see that lifeless body of Christ as she holds Him. This has been going on for a month. She holds Him. That must be the optimum of suffering, to hold your lifeless child in your lap, brutally beaten and crucified for loving. He had done nothing. Was this one of Mary's crucifixions? She suffered so! What of her suffering, her steadfastness to behold Jesus, always by His side, watching and suffering? Does Mary suffer by our side as we ignore her and continue to go our way and neglect her Son? She sees her Son and knows how He gave His life. She knows how He suffered. She knows it all, yet she has come and appeared. She begs us to return to Him. What more can she do to draw us to her Son?

What more can He do? He, God, died this brutal death!

How Mary suffered for love of us and love of Jesus!

Mary calls us to her Son. The Lady is calling on behalf of her beloved Son. She suffered the brutal passion, she heard the blows, she walked the walk only by the grace of God. She calls us to her Son. Will we answer?

WHY DOES OBAMA LIKE KEVIN JENNINGS?

 

Catholic League president Bill Donohue speaks to the selection of Kevin Jennings as Director of the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools:

 

On September 23, I wrote a news release on the curious moral credentials of Kevin Jennings to be President 

Obama’s

 Safe Schools Czar: a former drug user and irresponsible teen counselor, he is also a Christian basher. What was not known at the time is that he is also a proud member of ACT UP, the homosexual urban terrorist group that broke into St. Patrick’s Cathedral in 1989 and disrupted Mass; the Eucharist was desecrated and obscene depictions of Cardinal O’Connor were posted.

 

Now a group called MassResistance, and the website WorldNetDaily, have exposed Jennings as a member of ACT UP. And he is no mere member: Jennings is listed as a donor to a sick display, “ACT UP New York: Activism, Art, and the AIDS Crisis, 1987-1993,” currently featured at the Harvard Art Museum. Harvard, of course, would never feature a display of Klan paraphernalia and say it was being done for the purpose of “dialogue.”

 

The real story here is not the corruption of Harvard—that’s old hat—the real story is the president of the United States choosing a morally challenged anti-Catholic homosexual to join his team. That Jennings belongs to, and sponsors, an urban terrorist organization, should alone disqualify him from public service at a municipal level. And remember, Obama did not choose him to monitor global cooling—he was chosen to instruct youth on moral matters.

 

Catholics deserve to know why Obama likes Jennings.

Teach Your Children My Love

May 2, 1994 After Communion 7:15a.m.

I am inside of you. Read this letter to your children and their friends. I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God. At My name all knees should bend. In My presence you should be in awe and ardent devotion. I am Jesus. I want to be adored and worshiped. I want to be honored as God. Do you honor Me after Communion? I am God, child. Where do you rush in a hurry? To eat? Children need to spend time with Me. Do not teach them the bad habit of running for food. Tell them about My True Presence. Bring your breakfast and eat later. You have time. I want your time afterwards for 20 minutes. Teach the children this. They need to be alone with Me, too. I do not come to you and them in a different way. I am present, truly here. If they can spend 20 minutes with their best friend, they can spend 20 minutes with Me also. This is your opportunity to teach them a good lesson and not a bad one.

I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God. You are a tabernacle. Do not run from My altar to please the children. Teach them a lesson for life. Nothing compares to the time after Communion. God is in your breast. God, child! Do you hear Me? Nothing compares to God! I can do all things in My divinity and love. I come to you, a mere human, and you think you have to tend to worldly things. This offends Me so. You do not know. I come in love. Receive Me in love and reverence. Teach your children of My love.

Pope Benedict XVI is proposing a special Church structure for those Anglicans who wish to come into full communion with Rome without giving up many of the things they cherish as Anglicans. 

On a cool, sunny, crystal clear day here, at 11 this morning, Cardinal William Levada, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Archbishop Joseph Augustine Di Noia, O.P.. Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, held a press conference to announce this unprecedented Roman initiative after almost 500 years of Anglican-Catholic division. 

In London, at precisely the same hour, a parallel press conference was held by Archbishop Vincent Nichols, the head of the Catholic Church in England, and Archbishop Rowan Williams, the head of the Anglican Church. 

"Rome is reabsorbing us, it's as simple as that," one prominent British journalist told me after the Vatican press conference, when I asked him what he thought this was all about. 

That is too simplistic. 

Rome is hoping to reunite with all those elements of the Anglican Church which still feel a deep connection with Rome and with the Catholic faith -- and is willing to take considerable pains to make those Anglicans feel comfortable when they "come over to Rome."

That is what is happening. 

And quite a few people don't want that to happen -- and that explains some of the anomalies associated with today's anouncement...

Meditation:

Matthew 13

Concerning the parables of the Kingdom, the Lord taught, "The Kingdom of God is at hand.' The kingdom of God is so close to us that we can reach out and touch it. This was most true for the Blessed Virgin Mary, who literally held the Kingdom of God in her hands.

 

When she heard these words preached, did she recall the early years with Jesus, when she held Him in her hands? Did she remember and renew her sacrifice of the Lord by recalling the day she handed the Lord over into the arms of Simeon? Did these words make her recall the loving embraces showered upon Jesus by her (now deceased) husband, St. Joseph? Did they cause her to think of the Savior's death, when His hands would be bound to the Cross in expiation for the sins of the world?

 

Resolution:

The mysteries of Light help us to see Our Lady in the public life of the Lord; they Marianize the Gospel -- especially the mystery of the Proclamation of the Kingdom. In this mystery, one can review each of the parables of the Kingdom and the parables in general and reflect on them from Mary's position. How did the sinless Virgin, who knew the mannerisms and speech habits of the Lord better than anyone, who understood salvation history, how did she interpret the parables? What spiritual fruit was produced in her soul?

Today I will remember that "The Kingdom of God is at hand" and the reaction those words had on Our Lady when she heard them preached.

In the Luminous mysteries "apart from the miracle at Cana, the presence of Mary remains in the background. Yet the role she assumed at Cana in some way accompanies Christ throughout his ministry. The revelation made directly by the Father at the Baptism in the Jordan and echoed by John the Baptist is placed upon Mary's lips at Cana, and it becomes the great maternal counsel which Mary addresses to the Church of every age:

'Do whatever he tells you'

This counsel is a fitting introduction to the words and signs of Christ's public ministry and it forms the Marian foundation of all the mysteries of light."

Resolution:

To imitate Our Lady today, I will try to speak without adding anything superfluous. Charity, humility, and many other virtues are protected by controlling my words. I will try to accomplish this by keeping my mind on Our Lady at the Wedding feast of Cana, who with a heart full of trust in the Lord's power, spoke little but believed much --and received even more.

FROM MARK MALLETT: Fullness of Sin

Fullness of Sin

 

AS I arrive here in Europe, my heart is overflowing with many words and thoughts… I will try to write them here over the days ahead with God’s help. 

There is a cup of suffering that is to be drunk from twice in the fullness of time. It has already been emptied by Our Lord Jesus Himself who, in the Garden of Gethsemane, placed it to His lips in His holy prayer of abandonment:

My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will. (Matt 26:39)

The cup is to be filled again so that His Body, who, in following its Head, will enter into its own Passion in her participation in the redemption of souls:

The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized… (Mark 10:39)

All that is said of Christ must be said of the Church, for the Body, which is the Church must follow the Head who is Christ. What I am speaking of here is not the personal trials and tribulations we must each endure in the course of our lifetime, as St. Paul says:

It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God. (Acts 14:22)

Rather, I am speaking of the:

…final Passover, when [the Church] will follow her Lord in his death and Resurrection. —Catechism of the Catholic Church, 677

 

THE CUP OF THE CHURCH

After God purified the earth by flood, Noah built an altar. Upon this altar, God placed an invisible chalice. It would eventually be filled with the sins of men, and handed to Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. When our Lord drank it to the last drop, the salvation of the world was achieved. It is finished, Our Lord said. But what was not complete was the application of Christ’s saving mercy through His Body, that is, the Church. Through signs and wonders and the proclamation of the Gospel, she would become a visible sacrament of salvation, the divine doorway through which the world would be invited to pass from wrath to righteousness. But ultimately, she is "to be a sign that will be contradicted… so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed" (Luke 2:34-35). This too is part of her "sacramental" mission. In the fullness of her time, her own Passion and Resurrection will rend the hearts of nations, and all will see that Jesus is Lord, and that His Church is His beloved Bride.

But first, the cup of her own suffering must be filled. With what? With the sins of the world, and her own sins.  There must come a time, says St. Paul, when the cup will overflow with rebellion. Just as Christ’s own rejected Him, so too will His Body be rejected:

…the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness [will be] revealed, the son of perdition. (2 Thess 2:3)

Who is this son of perdition or Antichrist? He is the instrument of purification. For the first time the cup was drunk, God poured into Christ the fullness of His just wrath through the betrayal of Judas, "the son of perdition" (Jn 17:12). The second time the cup will be emptied, the justice of God will be poured out, first upon the Church, and then the world through the betrayal of Antichrist who will give to the nations "the kiss of peace." In the end, it will be the kiss of many sorrows.

Take this cup of foaming wine from my hand, and have all the nations to whom I will send you drink it. They shall drink, and be convulsed, and go mad, because of the sword I will send among them. (Jeremiah 25:15-16)

Inextricably linked to the cup of the Church is creation, which also shares in the cup of suffering.

...for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God.(Rom 8:19-21)

All that is created must be redeemed in the manner in which Christ has done it: "in the cup." Thus all creation is groaning (Rom 8:22)…

Hear the word of the LORD, O people of Israel, for the LORD has a grievance against the inhabitants of the land: There is no fidelity, no mercy, no knowledge of God in the land. False swearing, lying, murder, stealing and adultery! in their lawlessness, bloodshed follows bloodshed. Therefore the land mourns, and everything that dwells in it languishes: The beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and even the fish of the sea perish. (Hos 4:1-3)

 

NEARLY FULL

Dear brothers and sisters, this, cup, foaming over with the pride of men, is nearly full. How many more drops of abortion? How many more blasphemies? How many more wars? How many more innocent souls broken to pieces by the lust, greed, and selfishness of men? I hear the words in my heart over and over now:

The fullness of sin.. The cup is full.

Sin is reaching its fullness in our time. As Pope Pius XII said,

The sin of the century is the loss of the sense of sin. —1946 address to the United States Catechetical Congress

I hear in my heart the constant and loving warning that we must all prepare ourselves for this cup. We must remain in a state of grace. We must pray and intercede for souls with all our hearts. We must be ready to give our fiat to God. And we must remember that the future for the faithful is not one of disaster, but hope… though we must pass through winter before there will be a new springtime.

I want to shout: the days are imminent. God, help us… help us to hear the Voice of Mercy.

Yes, a cup is in the LORD’S hand, foaming wine, fully spiced. When God pours it out, they will drain it even to the dregs; all the wicked of the earth must drink. But I will rejoice forever; I will sing praise to the God of Jacob, who has said: "I will break off all the horns of the wicked, but the horns of the just shall be lifted up." (Psalm 75:9-11)

Love God, Love One Another: "Unite" by Rita Ring, May 2, 1994

Oh, My child, trust. I am indeed present to all at the Center. I am working in your hearts. You are all parts of the big picture. You must unite. All there must learn to love, not as they see love, but as I am teaching you to love. You do such unloving things and do not even know.

They need these letters on love at the Center. Love and union are what will make you light up the world. You must all learn to love. Put your hate, anger and sizing each other up aside. Unite. I am using each person there.

Prayer is the answer. Prayer is silence before Me in the tabernacle. I speak in your heart. Preach to others how to become open to My promptings in their hearts. Every person is needed. Every person has a part to play. Read these letters on love. Love is the key. Satan will divide you if you do not keep yourselves rooted in My love and strive for unity. I am communicating to all there. It takes time with Me after Communion and in front of the tabernacle. Pass out the little book and message on the tabernacle. Pass out the letters of love.

There cannot be strife and competition in your hearts. You are all called. How can you show the world about love when you do not know about love yourself? Love is the key that will light the city. Love is what you need to unite!

Satan wants to divide your workers. He wants them to compete and look with anger at each other. Know, My little ones, that he is constantly talking to you and trying to divide you. Love as I have loved you. Love your brothers. That is action, that is not "tolerance." That is not seeking self, that is giving self, that is being humble, that is mending fences, that is saying you are sorry, that is being in touch with Me. You cannot love without My graces. You need to be alone with Me. I speak to your heart in the silence. Stay after Communion. I, the Son of God, Jesus, Who died on the cross, long to be with you and give

you all you need. Stay with Me, My beloved ones. I love you so much.

Do not look at your brothers and size them up. Pray for them to be drawn closer to My Sacred Heart. You are not doing this alone. Do you see in the confirmations, how you are all receiving My promptings? You cannot get My messages for you if you do not sit in silence with Me. I speak in the silence to you. I speak in the inner promptings of your heart.

You do not need to promote yourselves, you need to do My work. I am using you as a unit. Unite in love. Whenever any ill thoughts of your brothers come to your head, dismiss them and pray the Prayer for Union with Me. I know everything that is happening and I want My work accomplished. Let Me take care of your brother who is irritating you. I can do it far better than you could ever do it.

Love, this is your call. Love, union, forgiveness, saying you are sorry. This takes Me. You cannot do it alone. "But," you say, "I don't want to say I'm sorry." I say that is what mends the fence. It is like the nails that hold the boards. A humble, loving heart will hold it together. Do not be prideful. Pride is the downfall. This comes from focusing on yourself. Pray my Prayer for Union with Jesus. This will help you to become more selfless and united to Me. A soul that is striving for union with Me will be a loving soul. The best gift you can give this world is to be about your relationship with Me. I mold your heart. I dismiss your fear. I wash away anger and doubt and you come away with My love.

Love will light this city. You must tend to the pruning in your own hearts. Do not criticize your brother. Be loving and pray for him. Dismiss all hate and anger. It is not from Me. I operate in love. You can accomplish so much with love. Argumentation, belaboring the point, is from Satan.

Pray for each other. Pray for union with Me. Pray for the union of your brothers to My Sacred Heart. Lead all to silent prayer with Me. Read the Scriptures. Read these letters, letters of love from Me to My beloved ones! Oh, how I love! You do not know how to love. How can you love and teach others when you do not know yourself. Circulate the letters-on the tabernacle, hate and anger, and loving your brothers-at the Center. Give them to all who are the backbone of the operation. They need to love, love God, love one another. That will light your city. You will be on fire with the burning love of Jesus in your hearts. You cannot do it alone. You must come to Me.

I am the Alpha. I am the Omega. I am your God and I am doing My work through you. I am working. Make yourself selfless. I can do all things if you surrender yourself to Me. I love you. I want you to write music and songs. Jesus.

VATICAN RADIO:  Pope Benedict Approves a Special Canonical Structure for Anglican Converts

The Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith announced today that Pope Benedict has approved a special canonical structure called a personal ordinariate for groups of Anglicans who wish to convert to the Catholic Church. The new structure will allow converts, including their often married clergy, to enter into full communion with Rome, while preserving elements of their distinctive Anglican spiritual and liturgical patrimony. The announcement was made at a press conference here in the Vatican by the prefect of the CDF, Cardinal William Levada and simultaneously at a joint conference in London by the Archbishop of Westminster Vincent Nichols and the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.

STATEMENT: Joint Statement by The Archbishop of Westminster and The Archbishop of Canterbury

Today's announcement of the Apostolic Constitution is a response by Pope Benedict XVI to a number of requests over the past few years to the Holy See from groups of Anglicans who wish to enter into full visible communion with the Roman Catholic Church, and are willing to declare that they share a common Catholic faith and accept the Petrine ministry as willed by Christ for his Church.

Pope Benedict XVI has approved, within the Apostolic Constitution, a canonical structure that provides for Personal Ordinariates, which will allow former Anglicans to enter full communion with the Catholic Church while preserving elements of distinctive Anglican spiritual patrimony.

The announcement of this Apostolic Constitution brings to an end a period of uncertainty for such groups who have nurtured hopes of new ways of embracing unity with the Catholic Church. It will now be up to those who have made requests to the Holy See to respond to the Apostolic Constitution.

The Apostolic Constitution is further recognition of the substantial overlap in faith, doctrine and spirituality between the Catholic Church and the Anglican tradition. Without the dialogues of the past forty years, this recognition would not have been possible, nor would hopes for full visible unity have been nurtured. In this sense, this Apostolic Constitution is one consequence of ecumenical dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion.

The on-going official dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion provides the basis for our continuing cooperation. The Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) and International Anglican Roman Catholic Commission for Unity and Mission (IARCCUM) agreements make clear the path we will follow together.

With God's grace and prayer we are determined that our on-going mutual commitment and consultation on these and other matters should continue to be strengthened. Locally, in the spirit of IARCCUM, we look forward to building on the pattern of shared meetings between the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales and the Church of England's House of Bishops with a focus on our common mission. Joint days of reflection and prayer were begun in Leeds in 2006 and continued in Lambeth in 2008, and further meetings are in preparation. This close cooperation will continue as we grow together in unity and mission, in witness to the Gospel in our country, and in the Church at large.

NATIONAL CATHOLIC REPORTER REVIEW:  The 13th Day Is the Finest Retelling of the Fatima Miracle

EXCERPT FAITH & FAMILY: The new Fatima movie, The 13th Day, lives up to the hype we heard all summer. It leaves older film versions in the dust in terms of cinematic artistry and special effects. Directors Ian and Dominic Higgins were illustrators before they were film makers, and it shows. Each shot looks like something one could frame and hang on a wall.

Most of the movie is done in black and white—color only blooms across the screen during each apparition. The absence of color makes the more primal light and darkness jump out at the viewer. The directors make almost constant use of close up shots — expecting us to read in the faces of the characters what the startling and disconcerting events at the Cova da Iria were doing to them.

The miracle of the sun is depicted perfectly: it matches eyewitness descriptions more accurately than any other movie version.  And here's a first: the vision of the "third secret" (that involved Pope John Paul II) is depicted on film for the first time.

After limited theatrical release on October 13th,  the film will be available for smaller group screenings at parishes and schools. (Check out The 13th Day if you want to find a showing or host one yourself). After that, the DVD will be available for purchase from Ignatius Press.

I have a feeling that this film will be a "Catholic classic" for many years to come.

FROM THE MAILBAG
VIA Dave: Tonight, October 13th, I was fortunate to see a screening of the new movie on Fatima, "The 13th Day" in Arlington, Texas. The movie ran about 90 minutes.

It is well done; the producers did well with the cinematography in mixing the regular scenes in black and white with Our Lady appearances in color.

I would recommend that people would first acquaint themselves a little bit with the state of the world at the time of the apparitions before seeing the movie.

World War I had been ongoing with no end in sight for three years. To some, it looked like it would go on forever without resolution. America had just declared war on Germany on Good Friday, 1917 (April 6th) but American troops would not see real action until October 20th, a week after the miracle of the sun.

Russia was in turmoil but the Communists had not yet come to power.

Amidst all of this, Pope Benedict the 15th implored Our Lady to intercede with God and on May 5th, 1917, he inserted the invocation "Queen of Peace" in the Litany of Loreto.

Heaven answered the Pope's call 8 days later on Sunday, May 13th in a backwater village we now know as Fatima.

The movie pulls you in to the events of Fatima and the struggles and sacrifices that the three shepherd children, Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta and their families make during this time.

Of course, in our time, the "Fatima clock" is still running. Perhaps, the vision of Hell and the Miracle of the Sun are intertwined. For if the Miracle of the Sun represents nuclear war, then how many souls would be lost to Hell in an instant of nuclear holocaust with no time to express remorse to their God?

The sun came to earth in 1945 in Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Will it come to earth again? And if it does, have we prepared our souls?

Where do My children go in their busy lives? People are so hard in the face. They are irritable, they push around so quickly. Where are they going? There is no peace in their faces, in their hearts, in their lives. Where do they go? What are they doing? In one second I could snatch their life and it is over!

How did you love? Nothing matters except how you loved Me and loved your brother. I call you to love of him, yet you treat him so cold. You tell your brother to get out of your way and you move stone-jawed ahead. You are in a

hurry.

Think of an anxious bird. "Oh, how silly," you say. "A bird that is hurried and has to move quickly ahead?" "Oh, so silly," you say? You are just as silly with your anxiousness. I tend to the birds of the air. I tend to much more. I tend to you, My beloved ones.

I call you to love. I call you to kindness. I call you to be Christ-like. What is your gauge for living? Do you live to please Me or live to please yourself? Is your self ever satisfied? Does it say, "Now I feel good"? The self searches for that which only I can provide. The soul of each person craves the love of God. Without God in your heart there is misery. Your degree of happiness is proportional only to how you love God and your neighbor.

Seeking the self is misery. The self is never satisfied. It wants more and more and is satisfied less and less. Where are you going in your busy lives? How did you love? How did you love God and love your brothers?

Are you miserable? The world leaves you hard and empty. The world leaves you in a state of misery, of want for more, but never having enough. The world begs you to satisfy yourself and robs you of the love of God. I call you to selflessness. The world demands selfishness.

Oh, My precious ones, as quick as a summer rain I come and call your soul home to Me. My way is the way of love. When I call, will you have stored up treasures of love for Me and your brothers or will you have an empty heart?

I fill your heart with love. Only I can give you the love you seek. You search, you wander, you roam, while I wait here for you with an endless source of love and peace and joy. I fill your heart to the brim. The world robs you of your joy

. It makes you self-seeking and you never find any joy there.

I am the Way. I am the Truth. I am the Life. I am Jesus, Son of the Living God, and I come to you this day with such love. Will you come and get your supplies? You are My soldiers in an empty world. You are the hearts full of the love of God. You will minister to My hurting ones for Me. You are My love given to your brothers. Will you answer My call to you to be a soldier in My army? Nothing you do here matters if it is not rooted in love. I am God and I am Love. I am the source of your joy. Come to Me, My babies. I give you all you need. I give you peace, joy and love.

I fill the aching heart and it operates in this world with love. Look at your stiff-necked brothers. See their pain. It is your love for them that will reflect the God within your soul. Oh, they know you are Christians by your love. Be Christ-like. Dismiss all hate and anger of your brother. Let your hearts be so pure, so full of My love! Come to Me. I wait for you, My loved ones. I await you in the tabernacle. I await you in the Holy Eucharist. Wherever you go, I go by your side. I am your God and I have loved you to My death. Will you love your brothers this way for Me.
