"Real Trust in God Leads to Intimate Friendship with God"

St. Gertrude was deeply grieved by a blasphemy she heard against our Lord.  She offered this prayer with all the affection of her heart:  “I salute thee life giving Pearl of the Divinity;  I salute thee flower ever fresh of human nature.  You are my most lovable Jesus...You are my Sovereign and my Salvation!”  Our Lord answered her:  “I salute thee also, I your Creator, your Redeemer, your Spouse...I who have won you at the price of all My Blood.”  He then bestowed upon her such tender marks of affection that the Saints were rapt in admiration. Our Lord added:  “Whoever shall salute Me as thou has done to repair the blasphemies vomited against Me, shall receive from Me similar marks of affection.”  If we trust...truly trust in His infinite goodness and mercy... He will indeed accept our goodwill in this regard and allow us to share in this affection which He gave to St. Gertrude the Great. (Please print and save for reference).

The Christmas Apocalypse

WITHIN the Christmas narrative lies the pattern of the end times. 2000 years after its first telling, the Church is able to peer into the Sacred Scripture with a deeper clarity and understanding as the Holy Spirit unveils Daniel’s book—a book that was to be sealed until “the end time” when the world would be in a state of rebellion—apostasy.
As for you, Daniel, keep secret the message and seal the book until the end time; many shall fall away and evil shall increase. (Daniel 12:4)
It is not that there is something “new” being revealed, per se. Rather, our understanding of the unfolding “details” is becoming more clear:
Yet even if Revelation is already complete, it has not been made completely explicit; it remains for Christian faith gradually to grasp its full significance over the course of the centuries. —Catechism of the Catholic Church 66
By paralleling the Christmas narrative to our times, we may be given an a greater understanding of what is here and coming…

ADVENT WEEKDAY

Peace is within our reach
The promise of peace is surely the greatest of all God’s rewards. For a human race caught up in the throes of fear and competition year in and year out, the idea that there is a path toward peace is good news indeed. As Christians we believe Jesus was sent to us by God for the specific purpose of showing us the way of peace. Jesus is not only the Prince of Peace, he is peace itself. Embrace Jesus and you embrace peace. Then, as promised, you will be filled with a sense of wholeness, harmony, healing, and hope. What more is there to proclaim but hallelujah!

Christmas Eve

Dear Family of Mary!

We have completed our journey towards Christmas. Tonight we will welcome the Newborn Jesus into the world amidst starlight and angels, shepherds and kings, donkeys and lambs and hay. We will wonder at the strangeness of God's plan, sending His Son to us, as one of us, and as one of the poorest of us. We will rejoice with the angels at His coming, and kneel with the shepherds in His presence. We will be amazed with the kings, and silent with His Mother and father. We will try to pray.

Denis always tells the story of how he went to confession on Christmas Eve, some years back, and confessed with sorrow how poorly he had prepared for Christmas. He felt ashamed at his lack of prayer and penance. The kindly priest comforted him, saying, "Oh don't worry. All it takes is a little straw, just a little straw..." Is it not true? Jesus was born in a stable, and all he had was the straw to sleep on and to keep him warm. He did not ask for much. Whatever we have tonight, we can offer him, great or small, king or shepherd, angel or human. We can offer Him our hearts. We want Him to be born in our hearts. We want Him to come and live there. He is all we could ever want.

Our Lady spoke to us:

"Dear children! Today, in a special way I call you to become open to God and for each of your hearts today to become a place of Jesus' birth. Little children, through all this time that God permits me to be with you, I desire to lead you to the joy of your life. Little children, the only true joy of your life is God. Therefore, dear children, do not seek joy in things of this earth but open your hearts and accept God. Little children, everything passes, only God remains in your heart. Thank you for having responded to my call." December 25, 2007 Jakov)

This is the great mystery of God's plan. He wants us to welcome His Son into our hearts and to adore Him there. Jesus is the Father's gift to us. Jesus is everything we could desire. And He is freely given to us, freely bestowed by Love. Let us open our stable doors wide tonight, and let Him enter, the King of Glory.

Christmas Novena Prayer:

Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary at midnight in Bethlehem, in piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires, through the merits of my Savior, Jesus Christ and of his blessed Mother. Amen

Blessed joy this Christmas Eve!

Dear Friend in Christ,

There is much more to Christmas than a mere babe in a manger. The Christ Child calls us to his manger for a far greater duty than to just behold Him as an infant. Please watch this episode of The Vortex and pass it on to as many people as you know.

ADVENT WEEKDAY

Say yes to the mess
Every birth is an unequivocal “yes” to life. We enter the complexities on earth without any assurance that our lives will be smooth and we won’t have difficulties. We don’t know whether we will have a disability, experience the trauma of an earthquake or a fire, or struggle with addiction, or feel deep loneliness. Yet in spite of the insecurities, the unknowns, all the possible things that could go wrong, we are somehow willing to risk for life, we are willing to risk for love. Today, in the midst of the busyness of Christmas preparations, take a moment to appreciate the courage it takes to say yes.

Birth of St. John the Baptist

December 23, 2011

St. John Kanty

O Emmanuel, our King and Lawgiver, the Desire of all nations and their Savior: come and save us, O Lord our God! (Traditional "O" Antiphon)

Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! Today, with Jesus in my arms, in a special way I call you to conversion. Children, through all this time which God permitted me to be with you, I continuously called you to conversion. Many of your hearts remained closed. Little children, Jesus is peace, love and joy; therefore now decide for Jesus. Start to pray. Pray to Him for the gift of conversion. Little children, only with Jesus can you have peace, joy and a heart filled with love. Little children, I love you. I am your mother and give you my motherly blessing." (Message to Jakov Colo, December 25, 2005)

Our Gospel today relates the birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:57-66). Miraculously, Elizabeth in her old age is able to carry her son full term! He is born, a healthy boy! But when the proud parents bring him to be circumcised, and the priest assumes he will be named Zechariah, Elizabeth interjects, "No. he will be called John." This causes a ruckus until Zechariah confirms Elizabeth's words by writing "John is his name." And as soon as this is done, Zechariah, who had been dumb since his meeting with Gabriel, is able to speak! He finds his voice!

Little John was a tool for his father's conversion. Zechariah was probably deeply converted during his time of silence. He pondered the gift of his son, and probably took to heart the miracles surrounding him. Then in his heart a deep faith formed. Zechariah was changed. This old priest found a living faith in his God and a wonder at the things God was doing! This is conversion. And we know that Zechariah used his newly found voice to proclaim the wonders of God, as we will read tomorrow in the Gospel in his famous "Benedictus".

In this message of December 25, 2005, Our Lady speaks of conversion. She tells us that conversion has been her continuous call to us during her time with us but that many of our hearts remain closed to conversion. Maybe like Zechariah we have lost our hope in God's power and love, maybe we have waited too long for answered prayer. And so, like Zechariah, we need to be thrust into a place of silence, where we can ponder the great things God is doing in our lives and be changed by them. Maybe we need the grace of little John the Baptist, who can work conversion in his father just by being conceived!

Our Lady first appeared on the feast of the birth of John the Baptist, June 24, 1981. On that day the visionaries ran away, and so she celebrates the anniversary on June 25. But that first day is significant. John the Baptist was the forerunner of Christ, preparing the way for the Son of God. He was called to preach conversion to the Jews. And he did it faithfully until he was beheaded by Herod. John the Baptist is a great symbol for us of conversion. And Our Lady came on his feast, to continue his work of conversion now. Dare we not listen?

Mother, help us to quiet our hearts. Help us to dive into the solitude of our souls. And once there, help us to ponder the wonderful works of our God in the Incarnation of His Son. Let this Christmas be a time of conversion like never before and may we find our voices to proclaim it!

Amen

Today Rev. Mahoney read the Christmas Story from the Gospels in spite of the threat of arrest or fines at the Capitol Christmas Tree:

Major Free Speech and Religious Liberty Victory in Washington, D.C. as Minister Reads Christmas Story from the Bible and Displays Nativity Scene at Capitol Christmas Tree

WASHINGTON, Dec. 22, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Capitol Police General Counsel told Rev. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, that he would face arrest and fines if he read the story from the Bible or displayed the Nativity Scene.

Photo: Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney reads Christmas story from the bible at the Capitol Christmas Tree

On Thursday, December 22, at 12:00 P.M. Rev. Mahoney and Kris Keating, Director of Hillside Missions, read the Christmas Story from the Gospels in spite of the threat of arrest or fines.

The Capitol Police backed down on their threats and no arrests were made, no fines issued and no disruption of the Scripture reading or prayer service occurred.

The Christian Defense Coalition applauds the Capitol Police for doing the right thing and allowing free speech and religious expression to be celebrated on the lawn of the United States Capitol Building.

This episode clearly shows that the faith community must fight attacks directed toward the First Amendment and religious liberty and be a loud, prophetic voice for justice and free speech.

Simply stated, it is important to stand up against "bullies" when they try to crush free speech and religious liberty and ensure that every American is allowed to express their faith tradition in the public square free from government intimidation or oppression.

[MaryVitamin] near the manger

Mary Vitamin for December 22nd

Topic: What did the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph do near the manger?

English: Nativity scene in Barcelona (2009)

Image via Wikipedia

Quote:
Cure of Ars
"They looked at, contemplated and admired the Christ child. That is all they did. They were in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament exposed on the altar of the manger. They blessed and thanked God who gave us his Son out of His love for us. Nobody will ever be able to understand or explain what went on inside Mary at that time."
From A Moment With Mary

Meditation:
Fr. Gabriel Pellettieri, FI
What do we learn from the three main characters of the cave in Bethlehem?
"Jesus, Our Lady and St. Joseph -- incomparable teachers of every virtue-- offer us sublime examples of poverty, virginity and humility at the moment of the birth of the Divine Child.
St. Joseph teaches us to be poor, that is, to be lacking in everything, at times even in what is necessary.
Indeed, he chose the poverty of a cave, not having the means to provide for a better and more dignified childbirth.
Our Lady, in her virginal childbirth, teaches us to be pure: chaste in soul and in body, in thoughts, desires and actions.
Finally, great is the lesson in humility that the Baby Jesus bestows upon us from His poor cradle. The Creator of the universe humbles Himself to the point of desiring to be born in a cave and to be laid in a manger -- in reality, a box fro which horses and cattle eat -- hidden from all, in a small town of Palestine."
Who is Mary? (Academy of the Immaculate: 2001), 46.

Resolution:
Today I will pause in front of the manger, in imitation of Our Lady, I will make a spiritual Communion and pray that my heart and soul may be a little heaven, another manger, where He can abide.

Marian Vow:
St. Maximilian Kolbe
"Our life must be an extension on this earth of Jesus' life by means of Mary"
(from a  conference on July 5, 1936).
I give this resolution to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Thanks be to God for graces received.

The Manger and the Cross - Calvary Begins in Bethlehem

Tribulation Times

December 22, 2011

THE TRIB TIMES WILL RETURN IN EARLY JANUARY 2012, GOD WILLING (James 4:15).

Merry Christmas

Image via Wikipedia

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL FROM THE ZAMBRANO FAMILY!  BLESSINGS FOR A JOYOUS NEW YEAR!

(Luk 2:15)  And it came to pass, after the angels departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another: Let us go over to Bethlehem and let us see this word that is come to pass, which the Lord hath shewed to us.

FATHER GERRY KANE: "Christmas is not just for children, far from it (look at the number of parents at the Nativity play – think of parish carol services, the multiplication of Messiahs , even Christmas Mass). But in a time of confusion such as ours, children are guardians of the simplicity and the truth at the heart of the story".

"That is why the Christmas story is so important. And so hopeful. And visiting schools is such a privilege for me. Because the wonder of this Christmas story is eternally fresh. I have my take on it this year directly from children: God is being born. Simple. True".

POPE BENEDICT XVI: "Both Christmas and Easter are feasts of redemption. Easter celebrates redemption as a victory over sin and death. It marks the culminating moment when the glory of the Man-God shines like the light of day. Christmas celebrates redemption as the entry of God into history, when He became man in order to bring man to God. It marks, so to speak, the starting point when the first light of dawn begins to appear".

"Even the seasons of the year in which these two great feasts fall, at least in some areas of the world, can help us understand this aspect. Easter coincides with the beginning of spring when the sun triumphs over the cold and the fog and renews the face of the earth. Christmas comes at the very beginning of winter when the light and heat of the sun are unable to awaken nature, covered in a shroud of cold under which, nonetheless, life is pulsating".

DIVINE MERCY: St Faustina’s Christmas

St. Faustina truly loved Christmas. For her, Christmas was about the birth of Jesus, the promised Messiah. As a poor nun, living far from her home, she probably didn’t receive many gifts. If you read the Christmas passages in the Diary, on every occasion, Jesus told her that her heart was His delight and His resting place. These words of love from Jesus must have been the greatest gift St. Faustina could have ever received.

Like many great saints, she also had beautiful visions of Jesus as a small child during Christmas. On Christmas Day, 1934 during Midnight Mass, the child Jesus appeared on the Altar dressed in a white pinafore. She described Him as “incomparably beautiful” and said “the whole time the Infant kept looking at everyone, stretching out His little hands”. (Diary 347) St. Faustina also saw Mary holding her child during this Mass, which she told St. Faustina was the “secret of her happiness”. (Diary 346) If you’ve ever held a new born baby, you will understand the powerful feelings this can stir. It must have been truly amazing for Joseph & Mary to know they were holding the Messiah in their arms that glorious night.

Thoughts and Sayings of Saint Margaret Mary: The Holy Eucharist

Visitation - Albertini
The Visitation- M. Albertinelli

December 22, 2011

O King of nations, and their Desired, the Cornerstone who makes all one: come and save our race, whom you formed out of clay. (Traditional "O" Anitphon)

Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! I call you to peace. Live it in your heart and all around you, so that all will know peace, peace that does not come from you but from God. Little children, today is a great day. Rejoice with me. Glorify the Nativity of Jesus through the peace that I give you. It is for this peace that I have come as your Mother, Queen of Peace. Today I give you my special blessing. Bring it to all creation, so that all creation will know peace. Thank you for having responded to my call." December 25, 1988

In this beautiful message from 1988, Our Lady declared: "Little children, today is a great day. Rejoice with me. Glorify the Nativity of Jesus through the peace that I give you." Doesn't she sound just like she did when she rejoiced with Elizabeth at the Visitation?

Let's sing and rejoice with her today! The Gospel for today is the Magnificat, her great song of praise:

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children forever.
(Lk 1:46-55)

Christmas Novena Prayer:

Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary at midnight in Bethlehem, in piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires, through the merits of my Savior, Jesus Christ and of his blessed Mother. Amen

Generous Christmas to you
The constant jingle-jangle of ads this time of year reminds us that it is not too late to get into “the spirit of giving.” Most of the time those words are followed by encouragement to run to the local mall for last-minute shopping, but there are many other ways to give as well. We can give of our time, lend an ear, share our table, make a donation, deliver a gift to those who are less fortunate. There are many ways to experience the special feeling that comes from an act of generosity. If there is magic to the season, that is surely it.

PARASITES OF CHRISTMAS

December 22, 2011

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on secularists who feed off of Christmas:

For the past couple of years, Macy’s has been brandishing the word Believe at Christmastime: the word appears in huge lights across its Herald Square store on 34th Street in New York City, and is inscribed on its shopping bags. To believe is to believe in something—it must have an object—but Macy’s prefers not to know what most people believe in at this time of the year,

Manhattan, New York City

Image via Wikipedia

so it allows everyone to fill in the blank. So inclusive.

For good reason, Macy’s chooses December to invoke its Believe campaign—it would make no sense to do so in June. Its latest newspaper ad comes close to telling us what to believe in, but stops short: it says, “Want to be the Ultimate Santa this season? Visit macys.com/gifts.”

Bloomingdale’s comes perilously close to using the word Christmas. Its latest ad reads:

  Merry
must-haves
{Gifts $100 and Under}

There is a silly full-page ad in today’s New York Times by the atheists from Freedom From Religion Foundation called, Reason’s Greetings. The “Solstice Tribute” is appropriately vacuous, but what got our attention was the caveat at the end of the lyrical statement: it says, “May be sung to ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem.’” In other words, “Rock Around the Clock” won’t suffice. Sorry Brenda.

The good news is that these secularists cannot survive without parasitically feeding off Christmas, thus giving us Christians a back-handed compliment. We’ll take it.

Merry Christmas to everyone, and most especially to all of those who will celebrate what Believe really means at this time of year.

Merrychristmas

BIGOT NOMINATED TO NJ HALL OF FAME

CATHOLIC LEAGUE

FOR RELIGIOUS AND CIVIL RIGHTS

bigot nominated to nj hall of fame

December 21, 2011

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments as follows:

The New Jersey Hall of Fame (NJHF) includes luminaries as diverse as Albert Einstein and Shaquille O'Neal. It should not be dishonored by including bigots: Catholics will be outraged to learn that of the 50 nominees for the class of 2012, Thomas Nast made the cut. Nast is not only the most bigoted cartoonist in American history, the 19th-century artist consistently inflamed hatred against the Irish and Catholics alike.

Amazingly, the NJHF's website omits any mention of Nast's anti-Catholic legacy. No one is denying his many talents as a creative cartoonist, but to discuss his work without mentioning his virulent anti-Catholicism is on a par with discussing filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl's contributions without citing her role in generating anti-Semitism in Nazi Germany. Nast and Riefenstahl belong in a Bigots Hall of Shame, not in any honorary club.

Nast's cartoons show a long and pernicious pattern of bigotry born of

Famous 1876 editorial cartoon by Thomas Nast s...

nativism

He encouraged the mixing of racism and anti-Catholic bigotry in his depictions of the Irish as a race of inferior gorillas; he demonized the Church as a nefarious institution threatening America's public schools; he depicted an attack on Fort Sumter by priests and bishops; he demonized bishops by portraying them as crocodiles with miters for jaws; and he also depicted them as emerging from slime while prowling towards children.

I have written to NJHF's Executive Director Don Jay Smith asking that he withdraw Nast's nomination. The NJHF bills itself as "a source of learning, inspiration and hope for children." Thomas Nast was not a "significant and powerful" role model for children in the 19th century, and he sure is not a role model for any U.S. citizen today.

Minister Told He Will Face Potential Arrest for Reading Christmas Story from the Bible at Capitol Christmas Tree

Minister Told He Will Face Potential Arrest for Reading Christmas Story from the Bible at Capitol Christmas Tree

English: United States Capitol with Christmas ...

Image via Wikipedia

WASHINGTON, Dec. 21, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- Rev. Patrick Mahoney to read the Christmas Story at the Capitol Tree on Thursday, December 22, at 12:00 P.M.

The Capitol Christmas Tree is located on the West Lawn of the United States Capitol Building.
Rev. Mahoney met with Capitol Police officials telling them of his plans to sing Christmas Carols, read the Christmas story, pray for peace, justice and religious freedom, hold a small 5 inch Nativity Display and pray for political leaders at the Capitol Christmas Tree.

Police officials told him some of his activities may be prohibited or constitute an illegal demonstration.

Rev. Mahoney contacted his attorney, Jim Henderson Senior Counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice, who in turn called the Office of General Counsel for the Capitol Police on Tuesday, December, 21.

After talking with the Assistant General Counsel for the Capitol Police, Mr. Henderson sent Rev. Mahoney this email:

"Your use of the Bible or the ornament (Nativity Scene) would convert your activity, in the view of the Capitol Police, into a prohibited demonstration. If you failed to discontinue that activity on police direction you would be risking ticketing or arrest."

Rev. Mahoney told Capitol Police officials he would still read the Christmas Story and hold the Nativity Display on Thursday even if it meant arrest or citation.

This threat of arrest for reading from the Bible comes in the wake of national news stories reporting that the Capitol Christmas Tree has no ornaments depicting the Christmas Story, The Nativity or Jesus.

Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, states:

"It is hard to imagine that a minister, or any American, would face possible arrest or citation for reading the Christmas Story from the Bible or holding a Nativity Display in the palm of their hand in front of the Capitol Christmas Tree on the lawn of the United States Capitol Building.

"Yet, this is what I am facing on Thursday at noon.

"Sadly, we are seeing a growing hostility toward public expressions of faith in the public square especially during the Christmas Season.

"We are now seeing that at the Capitol Christmas Tree where there are no ornaments of Christ or the Nativity and a minister is facing arrest for reading the Christmas Story from the Bible.

"I was told I could hold sheet music, an instrument or camera in my hand, but if I hold a Bible or small Nativity Scene that would be considered a 'prop' and cause me to face arrest or citation.

"I want to make to clear that every American should have the right to express their faith in the public square free from government intimidation or harassment.

"If that means spending time in jail for reading the Christmas Story from the Bible, then I consider that a small price price to pay." For more information or interviews call:

CHRISTMAS: ETERNITY ENTERS INTO CONFINES OF TIME AND SPACE

VATICAN CITY, 21 DEC 2011 (VIS) - "The greeting on everyone's lips during this period is 'Merry Christmas! Happy Christmas Holidays!'. Let us ensure that, also in our modern societies, this exchange of good wishes does not lose its profound religious significance, and the feast does not become overshadowed by external factors", said Benedict XVI during today's general audience, his last before the Feast of the Lord's Nativity.

"With the Christmas liturgy the Church introduces us into the great Mystery of the Incarnation", the Pope told faithful gathered in the Paul VI Hall. "Christmas, in fact, is not simply the anniversary of the birth of Jesus, it is the celebration of a Mystery which has marked and continues to mark the history of man: God came to dwell amongst us, He became one of us. ... During Midnight Mass on Christmas Night we will intone these words in the responsorial Psalm: 'Today the Saviour is born for us'. ... By indicating that Jesus is born 'today', the liturgy underlines that His birth touches and permeates all of history. ... Of course, the redemption of humankind took place at a specific and identifiable moment of history: in the event of Jesus of Nazareth. But Jesus is the Son of God ... Who became flesh. Eternity entered into the confines of time and space, making it possible to meet Him 'today'. ... When, in liturgical celebrations, we hear or pronounce the phrase: 'Today the Saviour is born for us', we are not using an empty conventional expression, what we mean is that 'today', now, God is giving us the possibility to recognise and accept Him, as did the shepherds of Bethlehem, so that He can also be born into and renew our lives".

The Pope then turned his attention to another aspect, reflecting on the birth in Bethlehem in the light of the Paschal Mystery because, he said, "both Christmas and Easter are feasts of redemption.

"At Christmas we encounter the tenderness and love of God Who is attentive to our weakness and sin, and lowers Himself to our level. ... Let us live this Christmastime with joy. ... Above all, let us contemplate and experience this Mystery in the celebration of the Eucharist, which is the heart of Christmas. There Jesus is truly present, the true Bread descended from heaven, the true Lamb sacrificed for our salvation. I wish all of you and your families a truly Christian Christmas. May the exchange of greetings on that day be an expression of our joy in knowing that God is near us, and that He wishes to follow the journey of life with us", the Pope concluded.

The poor cannot wait

At the end of his general audience, the Holy Father delivered greetings in a number of languages to the pilgrims filling the Paul VI Hall, among them a group of primary school children from Korea and another of Australian seminarians. To Spanish speaking pilgrims he said: "I will pray to the God Child for everyone, especially those who suffer. In these holy days, may Christian charity be particularly active towards those most in need. The poor can brook no delay".

KOREAN CHILDREN THANK THE POPE FOR HIS SERVICE TO MANKIND

VATICAN CITY, 21 DEC 2011 (VIS) - During today's general audience, three Korean children gave the Pope a file containing letters and drawings by thirty-three of their peers, prize-winners in a competition organised by the Korean embassy to the Holy See and published in the Korean Catholic daily "Pyeonghwa Shinmun". More than 1,200 children from all over the country participated in the competition, which was organised to coincide with sixtieth anniversary of the priestly ordination of Benedict XVI.

According to a communique published today by the embassy of the Republic of Korea to the Holy See, the aim of the competition was "to thank the Holy Father for his tireless service to humankind and for his great affection for the people of Korea. ... This event will help the Church and society in Korea to promote the Catholic vocation, increasing the 'sensus fidei' of Korean Catholics".

During Midnight Mass on 24 December, one of the children will read the Prayer of the Faithful, two will participate in the offertory, two will carry flowers to the nativity scene and two more will receive Communion from the hands of the Holy Father.
