SCRIPTURE COMMENTARY # 342

Now after these things the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them two and two before His face into every city and place, whither He Himself was about to come. And He said unto them, "The harvest is plenteous, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He send forth labourers into His harvest." (Luke 10:1-2)

THE ECCLESIASTICAL HIERARCHY: From this chapter we see how our Lord gradually traced the outlines of the Hierarchy of the Church, i. e. of the higher and lower orders of sacred ministers. There we have Peter, the Apostles, the disciples and the faithful; here we have the Pope, the Bishops, the Priests [with Deacons, Subdeacons and four minor orders] and the faithful.
