“Smoke was billowing from doors, windows and the roof”
Valley Center church damaged in fire
St. Stephen Catholic Church in Valley Center sustained $150,000 in damage during a fire on Friday morning, March 18. Valley Center is situated in northern San Diego County. The parish website describes St. Stephen as “spiritual home to over 1200 families” and as “unapologetic in our esteem and adherence to the whole of Catholic teaching as handed down from the Apostles through their successors, the bishops in communion with the successor of St. Peter, the Pope.” The parish, says the website, has both a “worthy liturgy and a welcoming spirit.” No one was injured in the fire, which was spotted by two early morning joggers, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. “When firefighters arrived, smoke was billowing from doors, windows and the roof of the parish hall adjacent to the church,” the Times reported. “Smoke, heat and fire damage spread throughout the building. The fire appears to have been electrical, and arson is not suspected, said the Valley Center fire marshal.”
