After a decade of media expulsion of a Catholic voice from the public square, Pope Francis is on the cover of TIME, but some traditionalists lack peripheral vision.
It has been five years, but I still talk to Father Richard John Neuhaus who left this world on January 8, 2009. These Stone Walls is dedicated to him, and to his great friend, Avery Cardinal Dulles, who preceded him in death by just weeks. Not since the great Archbishop Fulton Sheen had someone so influenced American Catholicism and religion in the public square as Richard John Neuhaus. In 2005, TIME Magazine named him one of the 25 most influential evangelicals in America, and noted that when the U.S. president spoke of religion, Father Neuhaus was “the living authority he cited most often.”
When I saw Pope Francis on the cover of TIME last month, I immediately asked, “What would you write of this, Richard?” Father Neuhaus was the standard bearer for a conservative Catholic voice in America, and the fact that I write at all can be traced directly to him. We exchanged letters often during “Scandal Time,” his incisive years-long ongoing essay on the decade of scandal so effectively used to squelch a Catholic voice in the public square.
In one of his earlier letters, Father Neuhaus admonished me to be silent. “It’s a sad consequence that as someone directly involved with the issues at hand, your voice will not be included in this discussion,” he wrote. It really ruffled my feathers, but Father Neuhaus ruffled many feathers. Then, in 2005, when the Catholic League journal, Catalyst, published “Sex Abuse and Signs of Fraud,” my article about money-driven false claims against priests, Father Neuhaus reversed his position: “Yours is a voice in the wilderness, so keep writing, and please let me know what you are writing and thinking on these issues.”

Pope Francis Little Monsters Remark Gives Goosebumps

The ones in charge of priestly formation, sad to say but it is a fact, are instruments of deformation of the future priests." Fr. Aloysius continues, "the priest, by virtue of his vocation... is called to the highest dignity on earth, and therefore the highest sanctity." Manion continued the quote, "In most of the seminaries they have a disastrous misinterpretation of Vatican II. I state this with all my conviction, after spending twenty-five years or more in the spiritual formation of seminarians."         Aloysius also gives the remedy, "As a house to weather the storms, should have solid foundations, and then properly built on them, likewise seminarians as future priests should have a thorough and deep foundation in the 'purgative life' which most of them don't have, and then led into the 'illuminative life,' by the most expert and holy spiritual directors of the diocese or congregation, and by the time of their ordination they should be entering fully the 'unitive life,' because the priest is another Christ, and should be one with Christ, not only in name but in deed." Dear Family of Mary!

January 2, 2014 message through Mirjana:

"Dear children; For you to be able to be my apostles and to be able to help all those who are in darkness, to come to know the light of the love of my Son, you must have pure and humble hearts. You cannot help for my Son to be born in, and to reign in, the hearts of those who do not know Him, if He does not reign - if He is not the King - in your heart. I am with you. I am walking with you as a mother. I am knocking on your hearts. They cannot open because they are not humble. I am praying, and you my beloved children also pray, that you may be able to open pure and humble hearts to my Son and to receive the gifts which He has promised you. Then you will be led by the love and strength of my Son. Then, you will be my apostles who everywhere around them spread the fruits of God's love. My Son will act from within you and through you, because you will be "one". My motherly heart yearns for this - for unity of all of my children - through my Son. With great love I bless, and pray for those who are chosen by my Son - for your shepherds. Thank you."

At first Our Lady was sad and then decisive.  

The key to this powerful message given at the beginning of 2014 is humility. Our Lady is looking ahead to the New Year with a sad but decisive heart. Why? She sees how many of her children are still very far away from God. She sees how many are so in need of the love of her Son. She understands how at risk they are. And she sees that it is largely up to us to help her find them and rescue them. We are her apostles, her helpers in this task of reaching out to those who need Jesus.

So, again, we might ask, why is humility so important? Why isn't Our Lady more concerned about our knowledge or our talents? Won't we draw more people to Jesus if we are smart and well spoken, and have degrees?

She tells us why humility is key when she says: "You cannot help for my Son to be born in, and to reign in, the hearts of those who do not know Him, if He does not reign - if He is not the King - in your heart." We cannot help Our Lady to bring Jesus to others if we don't have Him ourselves. We can't carry Jesus in a little package and hand Him over to those who need him, like a product to be transferred. It just doesn't work that way. We have to be so humble, so open to Him that we actually allow Him to live in us, to take over in our lives, to be in control of our lives and to reign in us. And when Jesus is living in us, we will automatically carry Him to others wherever we go. And He will act through us, because He is in us and is guiding us with His most gentle and merciful and loving heart.

To be humble means that we somehow understand that we are not the center of the universe, that we don't know everything, and that we need help. It means that we need the help of someone who loves us, who we can trust...and in walks Our Lady! She says, "I am with you. I am walking with you as a mother. I am knocking on your hearts." We need our Mother! We need Our Lady to walk with us through every moment of our day. We need her to knock on our hearts all day long, with her maternal reminders. She will remind us to open our hearts, to remember how little we are, to pray, to surrender, to let Jesus in. She will keep us moving in the right direction, if we let her take our hand and walk with us. We need a Mother.

And so, the hardest work we may do all year is to choose humility. Humility will be the foundation upon which our year is built. We can be humble enough to know that we need Our Lady to help us this year. We can let her guide us in our daily lives into a deeper love for Jesus. Then, through our choice to let Jesus be our King this year, we will establish the Kingdom in our hearts and lives, the Kingdom of love. That Kingdom will draw our suffering brothers and sisters, for they will perceive the peace and joy that exists in us, and they will desire it. Then Jesus will reach out to them, through us, and heal their wounds.

This could be a wonderful year! Let's be decisive like Our Mother, and choose to let Jesus into our hearts where He will reign.

Dear Family of Mary!

The apparition began at 3:20 pm and lasted ten minutes. Our Lady came joyful with baby Jesus in her arms. She blessed everyone and gave a message:

"Dear children! Today when Jesus is born and by His birth brings immeasurable joy, love and peace, I call you, in a special way to say your 'yes' to Jesus. Open your hearts so that Jesus enters into them, comes to dwell in them and starts to work through you. Only in this way will you be able to comprehend the true beauty of God's love, joy and peace. Dear children, rejoice in the birth of Jesus and pray for all those hearts that have not opened to Jesus so that Jesus may enter into each of their hearts and may start working through them, so that every person would be an example of a true person through whom God works."

Still snowed in here, and so I had time to transcribe another homily by Fr. Dermot Roache.  This one was given on the Feast of the Mother of God, and it is very powerful! Allow me to share his words with you!  They are powerful!  I chose the message above because it reflects so much what Fr. Roache teaches us.

January 1, 2014 - Medjugorje

Two days ago I was giving the homily, and I will backtrack because I believe that this is important because we are still in the Christmas season and the same message has to be brought across. And for those of you who weren't here the other day I had mentioned that at the preparation of the gifts, if we are watching we notice there is an inaudible prayer given by the priest when he is putting the water into the wine (the tincture in the chalice) and what he says is, "By the mystery of this water and wine, may we (the people of God) come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled Himself to share in our humanity. That is the essence of the Incarnation. The very fact that God Himself chose to come from his majestic paradise, not in any other form, but in the form of a human being, to understand every part of us, our needs, our concerns, our joys, our sicknesses, our confusions.

And in doing so He chose to be a vulnerable child, vulnerable. He chose a woman whom He made perfect, so that He could share nine months in her womb, so that she could give birth, and present Him to the world. And she knew that by presenting Him to the world, He was the key to buying our salvation. The Woman made a very difficult decision, knowing that someday He would have to be given up. So what happens here at the altar is very intimately linked with the Mother of Jesus. It has to be. She was not and is not just a vessel that brought Christ into the world.

The two most intimate points in salvations history are the Incarnation which we celebrate at Christmas, and the Redemption. They have to be intimately connected. And in both events, the Mother was there. And what makes this a most important day for us is that on the Cross, He turned to her in His final offering on the earth, His final offering, and He said "Mother (who He now calls Woman), do you see these people? They are your children." And then to John, who represents us, He says, "Son, that's your Mother." What greater gift?

And if you really and truly want to know who Jesus is, if you really and truly want to know the Son, get to know the Mother. And any mother will tell you about their own child. I know my mother reminds me all the time. She says, I don't care if your 60, I am still going to tell you about you. When we learn to have a relationship with Mary, Mary teaches us how to have a deeper relationship with Jesus. And it's all linked to the Incarnation because our humanness, our fallen nature, is restored forever in the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ Himself. She is intimately linked to every aspect of our human daily activities because without her, Christ wouldn't be here...because she said 'Yes"!

We here say 'yes' too. And for our loved ones out there who may not be ready to, go to the Mother. Talk to her. Tell her all the needs of your family, of your life, of your concerns. Believe me, when she was given to us on the cross, she knows everything about us. Everything. And she's not afraid to help us.

And for 33 years, coming here to Medjugorje, it is not because she has nothing better to do in heaven. It's because she is a Mother, deeply concerned. And the very first time she came, on June 24 1981, she came with her Son as the Infant, to say that "I as the Mother want to bring the Son to you." What better way to start this year than to start it giving honor, glory, and praise to the Mother of Jesus, to the Mother of our God, who is here for us, to help us at every moment, to teach us to come closer to the Savior of the World, Jesus Christ. God love you all.

Our Lady is the Mother, and she has come to help us, to guide us, to bless us, and to protect us.  We need her more now than ever.  May we turn to her in our every need, at every moment of our day.  She has come to be with us in these days!

Dear Family of Mary!

Our entire area is shut down today due to blizzard conditions! Everything is covered in deep snow, and I am going nowhere! So I took time to transcribe a beautiful homily, given on January 5, 2014 by Fr. Dermot Roache, at the English Mass in Medjugorje. Fr. Roache talks about the meaning of Christmas! It is a wonderful homily for meditation:

In the four Gospels that we are used to, the three Synoptics, Matthew, Mark and Luke, and this, the Gospel of John...the three Synoptic Gospels tell the story of Jesus' birth either through the genealogy of Jesus, going back from the generations, three groups of 14 generations, or through the story of His birth we are so fond of in Matthew and most especially told in Luke. But John starts his Gospel with this passage (John 1:1ff). John has an understanding of Jesus, the Second Person of the Trinity, Who is, Who was and Who will be, and starts to explain a mystery we can't grasp. John does not tell the nativity at all. But he talks about the Word.

For most of us, when we hear it, we hear "The Word" and I remember as a young man hearing this Gospel and wondering what is this Word all about. The Word doesn't become Jesus until Mary said "yes". But I want to explain a little bit further what John was trying to explain, and I think it is more clearly explained in St. Paul's letter to the Ephesians.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him. In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor of his will, for the praise of the glory of his grace that he granted us in the beloved. (Eph. 1: 3-6)

We are called to holiness. And again for the third time, I am here giving the homily this week, I have to go back to the theme of the story of creation. The reason this all came to be was because of the falling of man from grace. We were created to be perfect, and through free will, Adam and Eve chose another path, to have knowledge. And the knowledge, that was the Tree of Knowledge, was the knowledge that had darkness, sin, sickness, all sorts of things that they didn't know prior to that. And that same wood of the Cross, as we know, that Christ put Himself on, was the symbol of the Tree of Knowledge, that restored all of our fallen Humanity.

Our human frailty, is assumed into the Word. Our human frailty is assumed into Jesus Christ, to bless us, to restore us, to strengthen us, and the list goes on...And I think it is very important to realize that what happened at the Incarnation rattled the world to its inner core. People today, as I mentioned the other day, are even getting offended now when we speak about God publicly, when we speak about Jesus Christ publicly.

I can give an example of Ireland. Ireland has the Angelus every day on television for the country to pray. It used to be prayed as the Angelus, where the Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary and she conceived of the Holy Spirit, and the Word was made flesh! He became one of us and dwelt among us. And through all of the relativism's I spoke about during this week, now they call it a moment of prayer, so that other religions won't be offended. Imagine...a truth for all of humanity that the Word, Christ, came to this earth to share in our humanity...that wonderful exchange! And some people are offended. Many people of the younger generation don't even know the prayer of the Angelus. The demons flee at those words, "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us." Because Jesus Christ is Lord.

And as we are closing up the Christmas Season, tomorrow we share in the Epiphany, and then soon we enter into the Baptism of the Lord and Ordinary Time, as the rhythm of life continues we must go back all the time to reflect, "What does Christmas mean?"   Christmas is the love of God come down to the earth where He takes at that moment our human frailty and takes it upon Himself. You are not alone. I'm not alone. We are never alone. He knows our weaknesses. He knows our strengths. He knows who he made and He knows that His mercy, through the power of His passion, death and resurrection, His mercy is greater than any of our sins. His mercy is greater than any of our sicknesses. His mercy is greater than anything in this world. No questions asked. He gives it to us freely. Freely.

And as we reflect on that today, in our humanness, we also need to reflect on the humanness of a Mother, who chose freely to say "yes". Who in that choice watched her Son suffer, but she also watched Him rise. And she says to us every day, "Come back to Him, Who as it is said here, is Life. Come back to my son, Who is Hope. Come back to my Son Who is Peace. That's the call. And when we see in the Creche, the silence of adoring the Lord, and Mary and Joseph in profound silence, looking... they recognize Life, Hope and Peace.

For all of us who continue our journeys and our pilgrimages, let us go home, continuing our pilgrimage, knowing that in the Incarnation we share in the Divinity of a God who loves us so much that He was willing to lower Himself to share in our humanity. Why? Because of every creature created on this earth, nothing is (not was) more beautiful in the eyes of God than the human being He places here. And in our souls, He wants to live. He wants to be that Word, and He wants us to be assumed into His live through our souls.

Today we thank Mary for saying "yes". Today we thank our parents for giving us faith. We thank ourselves for renewing our faith. And in a very special way today, we thank God for sending His Son to us to share in our humanity. And to save us, that we may share in His Divinity in eternal life. May He Who is Love and Mercy itself, penetrate our hearts and our minds today. May the love of the Mother who so willingly gave her Son that we may have life, may she guide us by the hand, and lead us closer to her Son Who is Life, Who is our Hope, Who is our Peace. God love you.

Thank you, Fr. Roache, for this deep and beautiful homily. I want to especially point out the reality of the Angelus that Fr. Roache spoke of. The Angelus is a powerful prayer, because is recalls the deepest reality of Jesus' Incarnation and Redemption. And in the process, the demons flee. Yes, I believe that the Angelus is a form of deliverance prayer for our daily lives, for our homes, our neighborhoods, and our countries. And that is why it is so important to say, daily. The devil cannot stand these holy words.

And it is really amazing to me that this week, even as this homily was given, Mary TV has begun streaming a half hour of prayer, live, from the holy spots in Medjugorje, on our website. This half hour occurs during the time of the daily apparition. And it ends with the Angelus, prayed at the church before Mass. So we are going to be able to join together for the Angelus from the four corners of the earth! We will be praying this powerful prayer together, gathered through the internet in Medjugorje!

I believe this is a new gift that Our Lady is giving us, a new way to help her in her work to save the world!

Ivan had an apparition, January 3, 2014, at the Blue Cross in Medjugorje.  Here are his comments after the apparition: 

Ivan said:  

Our Lady came tonight extremely joyful. And she greeted us with her Motherly greeting:

"Praised be Jesus, my dear children!"

 

Then Our Lady extended her hands and prayed over all those present here, especially the sick. Then Our Lady especially prayed over those here who are sick. And in a special way I recommended all of you and the sick.

Then Our Lady said:

Dear children. Also today I desire that you live the messages that I have been giving you. Live my messages. Because only in this way can I give you other new messages. Pray in a special way for my plans that need to be realized. Plans for the world. Plans of peace. Thank you, dear children, for also today having responded to my call.

Then Our Lady blessed all of us with her motherly blessing. She blessed everything that you brought for blessing.

Then I recommended to her all of you, all of your needs, your intentions, your families, and in a special way, the sick. Then Our Lady continued to pray here over all of us. In that prayer she left, in an illuminated sign of the cross, saying,

"Go in peace, my dear children."

Dear Family of Mary!

We are awaiting a message from Our Lady through Mirjana. While we wait, let's ponder once more the message from December 2, 2013. It is a powerful message. It will be a good way to prepare for Our Lady's next message.

"Dear children! With a motherly love and a motherly patience I am looking at your ceaseless wandering and how lost you are.  That is why I am with you. I desire to help you to first find and come to know yourself, so that, then, you would be able to recognize and to admit everything that does not permit you to get to know the love of the Heavenly Father, honestly and wholeheartedly.  My children, the Father comes to be known through the cross.  Therefore, do not reject the cross.  Strive to comprehend and accept it with my help.  When you will be able to accept the cross you will also understand the love of the Heavenly Father; you will walk with my Son and with me; you will differ from those who have not come to know the love of the Heavenly Father, those who listen to Him but do not understand Him, those who do not walk with Him - who have not come to know Him. I desire for you to come to know the truth of my Son and to be my apostles; that, as children of God, you may rise above the human way of thinking and always, and in everything, seek God's way of thinking, anew. My children, pray and fast that you may be able to recognize all of this which I am seeking of you. Pray for your shepherds and long to come to know the love of your Heavenly Father, in union with them. Thank you."  (December 2, 2013) 

May we always seek to know God's way of thinking! Our Lady will help us!

Monthly Message from Anne, a lay apostle

We continue our cycle of monthly messages for 2014 with the message from January 1, 2006 for our prayer groups and personal reflection.     January 1, 2006 (2014)     Jesus     My apostles hear My voice and know that their Saviour speaks. More and more I will speak to My apostles in their souls, directing their actions. I am returning at this very moment through each one of you. Can a plan be more perfect? Bring others to me so that I can flow into the world through each of them, also.  Dear friends of the Saviour, together we are changing your world. When people feel fear, we will bring calm. When people feel anger, we will bring forgiveness. When people feel abandoned, we will bring love. When people feel great grief, we will bring comfort. And when people see death, we will bring them to an acceptance of heaven so that they understand eternal life. Many in the world today do not understand their inheritance. This creates a fear of death which prevents people from living fully.  If a person accepts the truth about eternity, that person works for Me because he knows that glory only lasts if it is obtained for heaven. The glory of heaven is love and is obtained by how much one loved on earth. People will be disappointed when they look back on their life if their life was lived in selfishness and if their purpose in life was to obtain worldly goods. This will be a disappointment for them, for Me, and for their families if their families were led astray by this flawed vision of the purpose of life. If you realign the purpose in your life, I will then help to realign the purpose for each member of your family. This is My promise to you. Make Me, Jesus Christ, the purpose of your life, and I will work through you to claim the world. How can I help the world through you and through the life I have given you? How you can set an example so that others will identify Me in you and in your actions? Think on this, My beloved apostle. Meditate on this. Give Me the time to direct your soul because both your soul and your life on earth are necessary to My plan. We do not want the Kingdom to lose souls because you lived a flawed purpose. This will not happen, of course, because you are listening to Me. But you must give Me the time each day to work in your soul, to communicate with you, to restore the precious calm that is our gift to the world at this time. This becomes more important each day. I send calm to you. You bring it to others. I send more calm to you, and you bring more calm to others. Do not be afraid when you do not feel calm. This means simply that the world has taken your calm and you must come back to Me so that I can give you more. This will work but in order for it to work you must make your commitment to prayer time. Consider today and each day what time is My time?  When will you sit in silence so that I can communicate with you? If you do not have a set time, perhaps you will set one now. I love you totally. I rely on you, My dearest apostle. I am grateful to you in the extreme and I am blessing your loved ones. I will keep My part of the bargain. Accept My gift of calm in your life and I will direct you in everything. Then your life will be lived for God’s purposes and truly, My kingdom will come.   Direction For Our Times relies on donations to supplement the cost of publishing the messages. The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God

Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! Today I am with you in a special way, holding little Jesus in my lap and I invite you, little children, to open yourselves to His call. He calls you to joy. Little children, joyfully live the messages of the Gospel, which I am repeating in the time since I am with you. Little children, I am your Mother and I desire to reveal to you the God of love and the God of peace. I do not desire for your life to be in sadness but that it be realized in joy for eternity, according to the Gospel. Only in this way will your life have meaning. Thank you for having responded to my call." (December 25, 1996)

On this, the eighth day of the Octave of Christmas, we honor Mary, who is the Mother of God. This title, Theotokos, is her most exalted one. This title was a matter of contention in the early Church, and was defined at the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD. Actually, Mary's relationship to Jesus, as Mother, helped the Church to clearly affirm Jesus' humanity and divinity in one person. This great mystery fills us with wonder to this day. That the Second Person of the Trinity would come down to earth, and by the power of the Holy Spirit become incarnate of the Virgin Mary, in order to be united with us and redeem us of our sins, well, it is beyond all understanding. But He did it!! And so we celebrate this great Mother of God today! And amazingly, Mary, who is Mother of God, tells us that she is also our mother. In this beautiful message of December 25, 1996 she says, "Little children, I am your Mother and I desire to reveal to you the God of love and the God of peace." Our Lady wants to draw us into the family. She wants to reveal to us our Brother, Jesus. He is our brother, one of us, as man. But He is far more. He is also the God of love and the God of peace. Our Brother is God! And He desires to give us His love and peace, through a personal relationship with Him.

May this New Year be the year that we all draw close to our Brother, and our God, Jesus Christ. May we learn from Him love, peace, humility, faith, hope, and joy!! May we carry Him in our hearts to all His others brothers and sisters, especially those who do not know Him yet. May our lives be realized in joy!

PS. I prayed for us all today, and pulled a saint out of our box of saints to be our patron for these reflections. Here is the saint we got!!

Saint Valentine, priest, physician, martyr (celebrated February 14th)

"I am beautiful because I love. If you want to be beautiful, love." (Our Lady in Medjugorje, March 25, 1985)   Pray that people will model their love after God's love

So, there we have it! St. Valentine, pray for us!!!
