Fr. Stanko Cosic continues in his talk to pilgrims:

I don't know how Christians lived before because I am quite young. But Christians today have forgotten what joy looks like and what joy is. Then when we see the program that has been given to us by Our Lady in Medjugorje, we are talking about very simple things like prayer, fasting, conversion. Again we ask the question, "Can we find joy in these messages?'

We start with prayer for example. If prayer is a dialogue, a conversation from our heart with God, what result will we have out of it? We can reflect on the everyday conversations that we have with each other. Sometimes we are talking about completely empty things. And that is something tiring for men. But when we are talking with someone about something that is built into us we come out of it with more motives than when we began the conversation. So how should our conversation or dialogue be with God? there is no chance that God will tell us something that is completely empty for us. And it is very important that this conversation has both listening and talking, understanding and listening.

How many times do you have a situation when two people are talking, and one is talking and the other one is silent. The one who is quiet is waiting for the other one to finish so that he can start talking. And when this one begins to talk he continues where the other one stopped. Actually there is no listening in that kind of interaction. So when we talk about our prayer, do we have moments when we are listening to God? St. Elijah, for example, experienced both the storm and the fire. If we put that into our own lives, we experience it as our problems, difficulties, our prayers, our desires, our crying out. But only at the moment when the storm and the fire are calming down, when everything is calming down within ourselves, then the silence is coming. And this is the moment when God is talking. We are not talking about this silence as a privilege we have in our life, it is a necessity in our life. So it is very important to understand that in prayer you have to talk and be silent.

Mother Teresa said this in a very beautiful way:

The Fruit of silence is prayer,

The fruit of prayer is faith,

The fruit of faith is love,

The fruit of love is service,

The fruit of service is peace.

That is how we reach our Queen of Peace, because she wants to lead us to peace, the peace that we experience in our heart. That is why her program leads us to joy.

First, as we said, prayer has to be a joyful encounter. Fasting...it is difficult for people to understand fasting as a joyful encounter. I have to say for myself, I really love chocolate. I was just recently at a seminar where we had fasting and silence. And there was one elderly lady and she told me that it is impossible for her to fast on bread and water unless she has a little piece of chocolate at the end of the day. And I said to her, "I will join you." (Smiles) Just so she is not alone in the situation! This is the spirit of St. Francis, guys!

Real fasting is something that leads us towards the fulfillment of the aim of our life. There was a doctor who recently said, "People just don't have the time to enjoy the taste of Belgian Chocolate." That's really sad. We are actually invited to enjoy our lives. Don't forget that the first stop Jesus made on his way was the Wedding Feast at Cana. He stopped there with His mother and His disciples. It was an invitation to have fun! That is why we are all invited to glorify life.

When we fast the sense returns to us of the taste of bread and water. There is a Jewish proverb that says, "You can taste water when you are in the desert, not before that." That is why it is very important for us to give up something or renounce something. It is very important. Then we can experience the benefit of the thing we are missing on certain occasions.

There was a priest for a long time who lived at the Holy Sepulcher for many years. And he said to his fellow priests, "I have to go back to my homeland." They asked him why. He said, "This Holy Sepulcher has become like an everyday thing to me. It is nothing really special. Like any other place. Therefore he wanted to separate himself from that place, in order to feel the importance of that place again. That is why we always emphasis fasting as a part of our fulfillment in our life. It is the way we learn how to renounce things, how to give up something. In this way we learn how to give up bigger things in our search for happiness. If we talk about all the simple things in everyday life, as for the married couples, there are always things you have to give up so that you can gain more at the end of the day. And at the end, not only prayer, but fasting causes us that feeling of joy. (Fr. Stanko Cosic, Fruit of Medjugorje, Episode 101)

Fr. Cosic has the gift of making spiritual things down to earth and understandable. Prayer and fasting lead to joy!! They lead us to a real understanding of who we are and the beauty God has given to us. I am so grateful for his counsel!

News Alert: Federal Appeal Filed in Fr Gordon MacRae Case The National Center for Reason and Justice announces a new federal court appeal filed by Attorney Robert Rosenthal for wrongly convicted priest, Fr Gordon MacRae. Editor’s Note: The following is a TSW guest post by Ryan A. MacDonald. I am once again pleased to write about a major step in the effort to free Father Gordon MacRae, a priest of the Diocese of Manchester, New Hampshire now in his twentieth year of unjust imprisonment. In a memorable quote in “The Trials of Father MacRae” in The Wall Street Journal last May, Pulitzer-prize winning author and columnist, Dorothy Rabinowitz summed up an appeal to state courts to overturn the unjust 1994 sexual assault convictions of this falsely accused priest. “Those aware of the facts of this case find it hard to imagine that any court today would ignore the perversion of justice it represents.” That “perversion of justice” continued when New Hampshire state courts rejected this appeal without a hearing on its merits, its new evidence, or its documentation of gross ineffective assistance of counsel in the 1994 MacRae trial. In an upcoming guest post on These Stone Walls, I plan to write in more candid detail of that perversion of justice from documents I have recently obtained in this case. But first, some hopeful news. The National Center for Reason and Justice, a Boston-based organization that reviews claims of wrongful conviction and now sponsors the appellate defense of Father Gordon MacRae, has announced a new federal court appeal. Attorney Robert Rosenthal, lead counsel for the defense, has written an extensive new habeas corpus petition filed in the United States District Court in Concord, New Hampshire seeking to overturn the conviction of Father MacRae. We urge readers to review this appeal brief published by the NCRJ and here at These Stone Walls. Petition for Writ of Habeus Corpus Memorandum It was the readers of These Stone Walls that made this step possible. In my last guest post here last October I wrote, “For Fr Gordon MacRae’s Appeal to Move Forward, Help is Needed.” Readers stepped up admirably to help meet expenses to ensure the continuation of this case. But now we must ask your help in expanding this effort to raise funds and to promote justice. The drafting of this extensive new appeal and its hundreds of pages of exhibits has exhausted all available resources and left the defense of Father MacRae in debt for the first time since it began. At the conclusion of this post, I will list once again the ways readers can help. We are deeply grateful to those who already have. It may also help a good deal if readers would circulate a link to this post by sharing it on your social media networks, among your contacts, and in comments on other blogs and websites. We need to generate awareness of this case and the importance of justice not only for one falsely accused priest, but for the priesthood itself. Just two days before writing this post, I read the following in a weekly Catholic newspaper by a prominent Catholic writer: “I hate to say it, but there really is no way to defend any of these guilty priests or their enablers anymore. The priest sex abuse scandal has been responsible for so much of the brutal criticism and fracturing of the modern day Catholic Church. We have been shamed. We have been put in a very difficult position as lay Catholics where we face scorn and ridicule…” Who could disagree? I can’t! However I also happen to know first-hand that many accused priests are not guilty. The scorn and ridicule we face as Catholics will only be magnified – in this life and in the next – if the justice we see meted out is not marked by mercy, and especially by truth. And the truth is that the Church is not just an easy target for the slurs of detractors, but she is also an easy target for lawyers and false claimants looking to score a windfall. This aspect of the scandal is seriously neglected – even by the Catholic press – because organized victim groups stand ready to trumpet their cause and demean the Church whenever the legitimacy of a decades-old claim is questioned. As a result, bishops have been bullied into silence and unquestioned settlements. They have also been bullied into discarding our priests, ignoring their due process rights under Church and civil law, and into casting adrift the accused without due process. Justice itself has been the most abused victim in this tragedy for the Church. By once again exposing the truth of “The Trials of Father MacRae,” Dorothy Rabinowitz and The Wall Street Journal presented compelling reasons to revisit this case, not only for the integrity of the justice system, but for the integrity of the Church as a mirror or justice. To paraphrase a well known Gospel parable, Father Gordon MacRae was beaten by robbers and left on the side of the road in our Church. No amount of Catholic shame over the sex abuse scandal can justify passing him by on that road, not by us, not by his bishop and diocese, and not by the global Church. We of good conscience, with truth and justice in our hearts, cannot allow the injustices visited upon this priest to stand. Dear children, I beseech you to open yourselves and begin to pray. Prayer will be your joy. If you make a start, it won't be boring to you because you will be praying out of joy. Thank you for having responded to my call."  (March 20, 1986) 

 

Fruit of Medjugorje, Episode 101 featured Fr. Stanko Cosic. Fr. Stanko is the youngest Franciscan stationed at Medjugorje right now. He is 28. He was not even born when the apparitions began!! He has lived his whole life with Our Lady of Medjugorje! And you can see the fruit of it in his peaceful and joyful countenance.

I have begun to transcribe his talk, because it is a so beautiful! His theme is Joy! Here is the first installment:

Talk given in the John Paul II building in Medjugorje in 2014:

I would like to greet all of you. My name is Fr. Stanko Cosic. For the time being, I am the youngest Franciscan Priest here in Medjugorje. (Applause) To be honest with you, this morning I wanted to prepare myself with prayer and meditation for this encounter with you. But of course you know you can't plan everything. Things don't go every time the way you plan. I had to go to Mostar this morning to do some errands and I just arrived 15 minutes ago!

These are the situations when I actually say to the Blessed Virgin Mary that she has to take over.

I would like to start with this, to give you the first line of this conversation today, because the topic will be joy! Joy is actually the opportunity to be who I am and to give myself time to be built up into the person she wants me to be. Also, we need to be joyful because things don't always happen the way we schedule them to happen. Joy that I am able to accept myself and everybody around me just the way they are.

When we look at Jesus we see that His point of view is very specific. The first time He met Simon, He told him, "You are Simon Peter." He didn't tell Peter only who he was. He also told Peter who he was going to become. He didn't tell Simon what he was in his past, but he told him what he was at that moment, and what he would become later on, what he was going to be. This is nice, because then I can see that I can do more in my own preparation and in my own giving, and I can give to Jesus all the things I haven't given to him yet. Also the old things, I can give them to him, because he knows what I will become. This is difficult for me, because many times I am actually facing obstacles and misunderstanding, but I know very well that Jesus knows what I will become one day. That is a source of joy within myself.

When we are reflecting upon the messages that Our Lady has given here in Medjugorje...and as you know the apparitions started here on the 24th of June, back in 1981...she finishes them with one sentence. As you know, every message ends with one sentence, "Thank you for having responded to my call." She is not saying, "Thank you that you will respond to my call." No, she says, "Thank you for having responded to my call." Then I always think of this meeting of Jesus with Simon Peter, because Our Lady sees what we are going to do in the future. She sees in us what we are going to become.

The 24th of June is the day connected with the last prophet. Our Lady, Queen of Peace, didn't pick that day by accident. Of course we do not know all her reasons. But there is one really nice story that I would love to share with you.

When Our Lady appeared to one man, she said to him, "I have something very important to share with you." And she told him to wait a little bit. Then she finally told him that thing after 50 years! So I can tell you that it is going to take a long time to accept and to understand.

But let's go back to the 24th of June which is connected with John the Baptist. He was the one who was invited to prepare the way for Jesus. Now we may ask ourselves, what does this mean in our life? Is it [Jesus' return] only connected to our death? Or maybe it [Jesus' return] is connected with our life. Jesus said, "When the Son of God comes to earth, will he find any faith?" I don't think He is only thinking of His second coming. But every time that two people come together in His name, He is within us. And when we connect with the role of John the Baptist, then we can say that it connects to our everyday life. That is why we have the invitation from Our Lady, to prepare our path towards Jesus. [We have to get ready for the coming of Jesus.] In order to do that we have to know Jesus. How can we talk about someone we don't know?

Imagine that you live in your family, spending your whole life with a person you don't know. How can you do that? It is literally hell. But if we are called to get to know each other on a daily basis, every day to know ourselves better, how can we do these things without knowing God? As much as we know God, we actually know ourselves in a better way. As much as we know God, we also know the people around us in a better way. We will learn to understand how Jesus was looking upon Simon Peter. [Jesus shows us] that people have opportunities to grow to perfection. That is the source of joy within ourselves. (Fr. "Joy is actually the opportunity to be who I am and to give myself time to be built up into the person she wants me to be." I love this statement. Joy is the opportunity to be...it is the moment when we feel life is ok, we are ok, God loves us, life is good, there is hope for good to come. Joy is the moment when we can entrust ourselves to God and to Mary, because fear has left us and faith reigns! Joy is the sign that God knows who I will become, and He is happy with me! Just as Jesus could see into Simon's future and knew he would become Peter, so also Jesus looks into our lives and sees that we will be His beloved children, His dearest family in heaven. And so we can rest in that certainty. Jesus loves us and will love us into holiness. Isn't that wonderful!!!

Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children, with motherly love I desire to teach you sincerity, because I desire that, in your actions as my apostles, you be exact, resolute, and above all sincere. I desire that, by the grace of God, you be open for a blessing. I desire that by fasting and prayer you obtain from the Heavenly Father the cognition of what is natural and holy - Divine. Filled with cognition, under the shelter of my Son and myself, you will be my apostles who will know how to spread the Word of God to all those who do not know of it; and you will know how to overcome obstacles that will stand in your way. My children, by means of a blessing, God's grace will descend upon you and you will be able to retain it through fasting, prayer, purification and reconciliation. You will have the efficiency which I seek of you. Pray for your shepherds that the ray of God's grace may illuminate their ways. Thank you." (February 02, 2014)

Our Lady tells us in this message that she wants to teach us something. She wants us to enter her school once again, and allow her to introduce to us something we may not know or understand. She tells us she wants to teach us sincerity.

As some of us heard, when the message was first presented right after Mirjana's apparition, the word honesty was used instead of sincerity. At first this may seem very different. But as I looked at the dictionary meanings for sincerity and honesty, I found these general meanings:  

Sincerity: "the quality of being open and truthful; not deceitful or hypocritical..."  

Honesty: "

truthfulness, sincerity, or frankness."  

These meanings are very close, almost interchangeable.

Our Lady tells us the reason why she needs us to learn sincerity. She needs us to be her apostles. She needs us to act on her behalf. And so our actions must reflect her call to us, they must be expressions of her love, her peace, her joy, and her plan. In order for our actions to convey these things, they must be exact, resolute and sincere.

Why is exactness important? Our Lady has given us several main messages to live. She needs us to live these messages as she has taught us. If we are not exact in living these messages, we may distort her plan and lead others in the wrong direction. So being careful to accept Our Lady's main messages exactly as she has conveyed them is important.

What about being resolute? Well, as we all know, it takes resolve to live the messages. Daily prayer, Holy Mass, Confession, fasting, Bible reading...these things take a certain decision on our part. If we are not resolved to live these messages, we will fall away from them and lose our way. Our Lady's plan will suffer defeat through our lack of resolve.

And of course, sincerity? Why is sincerity necessary? If we are not careful to convey the messages with truthfulness and honesty, we may instead present a watered down version of them. We may even use Our Lady's messages for our own advantage. Sincerity will ensure that we receive and live Our Lady's messages with fidelity to her words. And in doing so, others will be given the gift of Our Lady's messages with purity!

We have been called to be Our Lady's apostles. She has enlisted us in her school. And she is training us to be those who can represent her to others. This is no small thing! We have a very great mistress who deserves our best efforts. To make her known to those who do not know her yet is a great honor. May we learn sincerity- deep within. May we be pure in our efforts to serve Mother Mary! May her triumph first be complete in each of us! Then others will be drawn to her loving presence and find the joy of living under the Gospa's mantle.

She never left the temple, but worshipped day and night with fasting and prayer...She gave thanks to God and spoke about the Child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem." -Luke 2:36-38      February 2, 2014The Presentation of the Lord Dear Friends, On this celebration of the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the temple, we often turn to Simeon and recall his words, now part of the night prayer of the Church. He proclaims that Jesus is the “Light of revelation to the nations, and the glory of God’s people, Israel” (Luke 2:32). But we dare not overlook or forget the second onlooker, the holy woman, Anna. What an example she sets for us – praying, fasting, giving thanks God, and sharing the good news by speaking about the child to all! I suspect Anna faithfully represents so many of our own mothers. May God bless us in our efforts to imitate the holy ones, and here especially the holy Prophetess Anna as we try to live and share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Almighty ever living God, we ask that as Your only begotten Son Jesus was presented this day in the temple, so, by Your grace, may we come before You with minds made pure, through Christ our Lord.   Amen Rev. Preparing for Communion (Part 2)

Mary’s Village
                In Medjugorje, Our Lady asked the little village to begin a daily 6:00 pm mass and to arrive at 5:00 pm to prepare for the mass.  Since 1981, the very large Church of St. James is filled each night.
                When they began this devout practice, the people did not know that in nine years the terrible Bosnian War would break out.  All during the war they came each night.  No destruction touched their village.  Many bombs did not even explode.  Such is the importance of daily mass with proper preparation.

What is My Spiritual State?
                 When we die, we will come into Jesus’ presence and gain a full enlightenment of our spiritual state.  In Communion, we also come into Jesus’ presence.  We should allow that moment to be a spiritual light.  Before receiving, we should honestly ask ourselves, “What is my spiritual state?”  That question will inevitably uncover some areas of sins and failures.  Asking that question often enough, inevitably leads to confession.  The two sacraments are meant to go together.

Being Honest
                Jesus said, "I am the Truth.”  Holy Communion is our greatest moment of truth on this earth.  St. Paul asks us to make the moment of Communion a time of great truth.  He writes, “Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily sins against the body and blood of the Lord.  A man should examine himself first; only then should he eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” (1Cor 11:27-28)
                This “examining self” doesn’t lead to exclusion from Eucharist but to seek forgiveness of sins.  As Paul writes, “Then, should he eat of the bread and drink of the cup.”

A Special Story
                Communion brings the greatest consolation.  St. Thomas calls the Eucharist “a pledge of glory” because worthy Holy Communions prepare Catholics to come before Jesus in judgment.  A priest told me his personal story.
“I was besieged with fears about the moment of coming before Jesus.  These fears had existed for over two years.  Finally, they came full force at a mass I was concelebrating.  During the mass, I had one question, “Lord, what can I hold on to?”  During mass, I asked that question a hundred times.  Finally, I went to receive Communion.   As I held out my hand, the celebrant said “The Body of Christ."  Suddenly I had my answer, “What do I hold on to?  The host was in my hand.  That is what I hold on to.  The fears were forever behind me.  Holy Communion, as St. Thomas wrote, has become a pledge of glory.”

We continue our cycle of monthly messages for 2014 with the message from February 1, 2006 for our prayer groups and personal reflection.

Jesus

Dearest apostle, I urge you to be little in your soul. Only in spiritual humility will you see the true state of your soul and so understand the work necessary for you to become holy. Holiness is your target. If a soul is holy, I can flow great graces through that soul into the world. Do not think about your own goals, little apostle, without checking them against My goals. In this time I require many apostles who strive to be humble. This is the opposite of what the world encourages. Do you see? Study this concept and you will see that great smallness is necessary in the Kingdom of God. Souls in heaven do not tear each other down, but build each other up. My saints in heaven seek ways to affirm the struggling souls on earth. They do not consider how to best put themselves forward, but rather how to best lift a soul toward holiness. You must be the same. I entreat you to listen to your Saviour. Strive for smallness in your service to the Kingdom. Be content to allow Me to have the glory. I will gaze into your soul and see the longing for holiness and I will make you holy, but I can only do this if you allow Me. My beloved ones, you will see in My life an example of constant patience with others. I was gentle on earth and I am still gentle. Because I am gentle, I am patient with you. You must be patient with others. You must be gentle with others. You must be forgiving of others, trusting My ability to work in the soul who allows Me freedom. If a soul is willing, I will help them. I have told you this. Trust My words and pray for each other, particularly those with whom you are called to walk during this time of transition. Dearest friends of heaven, believe Me when I tell you that all will be well. Your concern at this time should be to advance in holiness and you will only advance if you remain small. Be at peace in everything because My grace is more powerful than any bitter plans of the enemy. I am asking you to concentrate on your own movement to Me. For each apostle who gives Me their pride, I give the world My majesty, the majesty of Jesus Christ, your Returning King.

Dear Family of Mary!

Tomorrow is the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple! Our novena ends today, in anticipation of this great feast! We have been praying for priests these 9 days and it has been a great joy!!!

Novena for Priests - Day 9

"Dear children...extend the joy of love and support to your shepherds, just as my Son has asked them to extend it to you. Thank you." (July 2, 2013)

Sr. Briege McKenna:

During a priests' retreat, a priest came to me for ministry, and as I was praying with him, I got a beautiful picture of Jesus. He was kneeling on a rugged road holding the priest's hands and saying to him, "Robert, forgive yourself, I have forgiven you. Come back to me. Remember the story of the prodigal son. That was you. I'm waiting for you to come back to me. Forgive yourself and return to me again."

I told him, "Father, I don't know what's wrong in your life, but the Lord has really forgiven you for the mistake you made."

 

The priest broke down and then he told me that he had made a terrible mistake, that he had very rashly made a decision that caused a lot of scandal. He took a leave of absence and went home to his parents. Every morning he would go into the parish church in his parents' home town and weep, telling God what a terrible mistake he had made. He felt he could never go back, that the bishop would be angry with him and would not welcome him.

One day, after a whole year, he read the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15. He got the courage to go back to see his bishop. He said, "I got on my knees and begged the bishop to forgive me and asked him to take me back." You know, sister Briege, I will never forget what the bishop did. The bishop was sitting at his desk. He got up and came around the desk and took me in his arms. He said, like a father to a son, 'Robert, I'll take you back. Jesus has forgiven you and so do I. But I want you to do one thing. I want you to go to Sister Briege's retreat and I want you to come back to me after the retreat and tell me how you got on. I'll place you in a parish.'

Robert had a tremendous experience. It totally changed his life. He came to know the mercy and love of Jesus. I think he also experienced the tenderness and compassion and the fatherhood of his bishop. The bishop didn't condemn him or blame him for the shame he had brought on the diocese, even though it was true. Instead, he received his priest in love, as Jesus had. We need to pray that every priest and bishop will have the heart of a father, and will discern how to respond in love in any situation. (Sr. Briege McKenna. "Miracles Do Happen". P.89-90)

  

A PRAYER FOR PRIESTS 

Keep them, I pray Thee, dearest Lord. Keep them, for they are Thine
The priests whose lives burn out before Thy consecrated shrine.

Keep them, for they are in the world though from the world apart.

When earthly treasures tempt, allure - Shelter them in Thy heart.

Keep them and comfort them in hours of loneliness and pain,

when all their life of sacrifice for souls seems but in vain.

Keep them and remember Lord, they have no one but Thee.

They have only human hearts, with human frailty.

Keep them as spotless as the Host, that daily they caress;

their every thought and word and deed, deign, dearest Lord, to bless.

Lord Jesus, please give us all hearts that forgive and accept forgiveness so that we can heal our Church and our world. May Your Sacred Heart be the source of our forgiveness and love for our priests and their forgiveness and love for us!
