Understanding Francis/Misunderstanding Francis by Mark Mallett

Understanding Francis

AFTER Pope Benedict XVI relinquished the seat of Peter, I sensed in prayer several times the words: You have entered into dangerous days. It was the sense that the Church is entering into a period of great confusion.
Enter: Pope Francis.
Not unlike Blessed John Paul II’s papacy, our new pope has also overturned the deeply rooted sod of the status quo. He has challenged everyone in the Church in one way or another. Several readers, however, have written me with concern that Pope Francis is departing from the Faith by his unorthodox actions, his blunt remarks, and seemingly contradictory statements. I have been listening for several months now, watching and praying, and feel compelled to respond to these questions regarding our Pope’s candid ways….

THE letters in response to Understanding Francis couldn’t be more diverse. From those who said it was one of the most helpful articles on the Pope that they’ve read, to others warning that I am deceived. Yes, this is precisely why I have said over and over again that we are living in “dangerous days.” It is because Catholics are becoming more and more divided among themselves. There is a cloud of confusion, mistrust, and suspicion that continues to seep into the walls of the Church. That said, it is hard not to be sympathetic with some readers, such as one priest who wrote: Read more… »

Pope Francis Consecrates Vatican City to St Michael the Archangel By Fr. Gordon J. MacRae

pope-francis-consecrates-vatican-city-to-st-michael-the-archangel-father-gordon-j-macrae6s
In echoes of Pope Leo XIII, Pope Francis consecrated Vatican City to St Joseph, guardian of the family, and St Michael the Archangel, defender against evil.
“For he will give his angels charge of you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.” (Psalm 91:11-12)
Like most blogs, These Stone Walls generates a “monthly stats” report that’s printed and mailed to me. I’m fascinated by it, not only because the report reveals a global readership, but because it reinforces every geeky trait I have. The report includes the daily number of visitors for the previous month, and, most interesting to me, the numbers of visitors from other countries.  In recent months, the most visitors to TSW have been from the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. There’s also a recent marked increase in readers from Thailand, several countries in the Middle East and Africa, and Pope Francis’ homeland, Argentina. Considering that I have never even seen TSW myself, and write from the confines of an 8′ x 12′ prison cell, this monthly report is an utter mystery to me.
A part of that mystery is the perplexing revelation that three full years after writing it, one post still shows up more than any other as heavily visited month after month. That post is “Angelic Justice: St. Michael the Archangel and the Scales of Hesed.” It had another leap in readers this past summer when the Vatican Information Service blog quoted Pope Francis in a post entitled “New Monument to Archangel Michael in the Vatican“:

Pope Francis Portrait Painting
Pope Francis Portrait Painting (Photo credit: faithmouse)
“We consecrate Vatican City State to St. Michael Archangel, asking him to defend us against evil and to banish it…and to St. Joseph, guardian of Jesus, the guardian of the Holy Family, whose presence strengthens us and gives us the courage to make space for God in our lives in order that good may always vanquish evil.” (Pope Francis, July 5, 2013)
In some corners of the world, and, sadly, even in some corners of the Church, there has been a shallow and misguided tendency to see this Pope’s concerns for the influence of evil as a quaint anachronism, a dramatic glimpse back to a bygone, pre-scientific era in which the work of the devil seemed all too real, but is now just a religious fantasy.
Anyone who adopts such a view has fallen prey to Satan’s most insidious agenda. To get humanity to not believe is to get humanity to drop its guard. I live in a place saturated by evil, a place filled not only with men who have given themselves entirely over to evil, but also with men who have fallen victim to evil’s seduction, and want to climb out.
No one of you could spend 19 years here and not be convinced that evil is real, that it has an agenda, and that its agenda is our destruction. The men in my prison world are no longer Satan’s targets among humanity. Satan is not actually very present here where we live. His work here is done, and for many here, he has won.
No, Satan is at work where YOU live. It’s you he wants.  It’s your faith, and your goodness, and your commitment to Christ. It’s your Church he wants, and Pope Francis knows this. The gates of hell cannot prevail against her, but all manner of spiritual harm can fall upon those in denial of evil’s reach.
Just a week before that little noticed July 5tn ceremony in the Vatican Gardens, Catholic Herald (U.K.) columnist William Oddie commented, “The secular media is beginning to think that Pope Francis is obsessed by the devil…” Mr. Oddie chided an Associated Press headline declaring that Francis is obsessed with Satan “because he has mentioned the devil on a handful of occasions within a two month period.”
The AP and other secular media would do well to pay close attention to their own news reports over those two months.  Far too often they have lent themselves to an underworld of contempt for truth and justice. I described some vivid modern examples in “Strike the Shepherd: Behind the Campaign to Smear the Pope.”
William Oddie had a good follow-up post at the U.K.’s Catholic Herald in which he drew a connection between the frequency of Pope Francis’ references to the devil and “the question of what is necessary for him to achieve the long desperately needed reform of the Roman curia.” William Oddie’s title for his July 10 post was “Pope Francis has consecrated Vatican City State to St Michael the Archangel, and asked him to drive out the evil one: the battle against corruption begins.”  Mr. Oddie quoted Pope Francis:
“We are not alone on the journey or in the trials of life. We are accompanied and supported by the angels of God….In consecrating Vatican City to St. Michael the Archangel, I ask him to defend us from the evil one and banish him.” (Pope Francis, July 5, 2013)
Writing in his usual thoughtful prose at the excellent The Bellarmine Forum, John B. Manos suggested that in this consecration of Vatican City to Saint Michael, Pope Francis “is following an outline given to him by Pope Leo XIII.” With Pope Emeritus Benedict present on July 5 – a scene without precedent in our 2,000 year old Church – Pope Francis blessed a statue of Saint Michael with Satan subdued under his feet. It was created by the great artist Guiseppe Antonio Lomuscio. In that brief ceremony, Pope Francis consecrated Vatican City to Saint Joseph and Saint Michael.
THE VISION OF POPE LEO XIII
Saint Michael
For the press to reduce all this to Pope Francis having an obsession with the devil makes me wonder who, exactly, has been out of touch with reality. It isn’t Pope Francis. I think John Manos was onto something important when he connected this Consecration by Pope Francis with Pope Leo XIII.
A subheading of  that August 23 post by John Manos at The Bellarmine Forum is “Leo XIII tied Mary, Joseph, St. Michael, and Sts. Peter and Paul together to protect the Church.“  The evidence for why Pope Leo XIII included St. Michael the Archangel in such a mission might be found in the longer version of the Prayer to St. Michael composed by Pope Leo  in 1888 after a terrible night in which God allowed him a vision  of  Satan’s plan to disrupt the Church.  The prayer  was approved for use by the faithful on May 18, 1890.
Anyone who prays this prayer by Leo XIII will find in recent news out of Rome the “crafty enemies,” “impious hands,” “abominable impiety,” and “iniquitous design” that have pervaded Rome in the time of Benedict and Francis. Recent stories of a misled butler, stolen documents, the Vatican’s own versions of “Wiki-leaks,” rumors of money laundering, and worse rumors of a secret gay cabal with an agenda should all conspire to focus new interest and new urgency on Pope Francis’ actions and in Pope Leo’s prayer.
The well known prayer to St. Michael posted on the Home Page of These Stone Walls is but a segment of this longer version which I prayed daily in the tumultuous period between the resignation of Pope Benedict and the Conclave that elected Pope Francis.  In the August/September issue of the excellent magazine, Inside the Vatican, Paul Haffner has a meditation entitled “St. Michael the Archangel” that includes the complete prayer. I invite TSW readers to offer this prayer in support of Pope Francis, mindful of the mission set before him:
“O Glorious Archangel St. Michael, Prince of the heavenly host, be our defense in the terrible warfare which we carry on against Principalities and Powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, spirits of evil. Come to the aid of man, whom God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of the devil.  Fight this day the battle of the Lord, together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in heaven. That cruel, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan, who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels.
“Behold, this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage. Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order to blot out the name of God and of His Christ, to seize upon, slay, and cast into eternal perdition souls destined for the crown of glory. This wicked dragon pours out, as a most impure flood, the venom of his malice on men, of his depraved mind, corrupt heart, spirit of lying, impiety, blasphemy, his pestilent breath of impurity, and of every vice and iniquity. These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness the Church, the Spouse of the Immaculate Lamb, and have laid impious hands on her most sacred possessions.  In the Holy Place itself, where has been set up the See of the most holy Peter and the Chair of Truth for the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety, with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck, the sheep may be scattered.
“Arise then, 0 invincible Prince, bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God, and give them the victory. They venerate thee as their protector and patron; in thee Holy Church glories as her defense against the malicious power of hell; to thee God has entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude. Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet, so far conquered that he may no longer be able to hold men in captivity and harm the Church. Offer our prayers in sight of the Most High, so that they may quickly conciliate the mercies of the Lord; and beating down the dragon, the ancient serpent who is the devil and Satan, do thou again make him captive in the abyss, that he may no longer seduce the nations. Amen.” (Pope Leo XIII, Vatican City, 1888)

Our Lady glowing in beautiful radiance!

Received this E-mail today from my friend Maureen who is right now in Medjugorje and has seen the statue of Our Lady in Vicka's house that is glowing.
E.S.

This was something wonderful to see!  As we waited in line with thousands of other pilgrims and villagers last night here in Medjugorje the anticipation was amazing.  On entering the room and being in darkness the statue of Our Lady was glowing in beautiful radiance!   Her messages have enlightened our minds and our hearts for over 32 years now, but tonight we saw the light of her love with our eyes!   This has attracted thousands and I have tried to think of how it was in the first days of the apparitions with thousands arriving!    Thank you, Gospa, for your love for us!

Dear Family of Mar!

The message from Our Lady, Queen of Peace, for September 25, 2013 through Marija:

"Dear children! Also today I call you to prayer. May your relationship with prayer be a daily one. Prayer works miracles in you and through you, therefore, little children, may prayer be a joy for you. Then your relationship with life will be deeper and more open and you will comprehend that life is a gift for each of you. Thank you for having responded to my call."

San Francisco Rosary Rally October 12, 2013!

San Francisco Rosary Rally
October 12, 2013!
Join us on Saturday, October 12, 2013, for the Third Annual San Francisco Rosary Rally! The day begins at 9:30 AM with the Annual Hispanic Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral, followed by a procession to UN Plaza and the 12 noon Rosary Rally!

Rosary Rally 2012
The sky was Marian blue, there was not a cloud in the sky, and the sun was the warmest it had been in days. I would have to say that Our Lady was pleased at the love and devotion shown her and her Son as we prayed the Rosary and knelt in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Saturday afternoon, October 13, 2012.

Our new venue at United Nations Plaza turned out to be a positive. Passers-by on Market Street stopped and in some cases stayed, as they saw thousands of us in prayer and song.  Was this really taking place in San Francisco?
One of the best parts of the Rally was the partnership that developed between the Rosary Rally team and the Archdiocesan Hispanic Pastoral Council on the day of its Annual Hispanic Mass. After a standing-room-only Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral and a blessing by San Francisco's new (and fluent in Spanish) Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, a procession of 1,700 led by Bishop William Justice, wound down the streets of San Francisco to U.N. Plaza. There they met up with the Rally crowd of another 2,000 or so, already reciting the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary. Seminarians carried three statues of Our Lady in the procession--Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Immaculate Conception--surrounded by flowers on floats, which then graced the stage throughout the two-hour Rally.
Devotions included two Rosaries, Benediction, with Bishop Justice officiating, and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Talks followed by Fr. Moises Agudo, Archdiocesan Hispanic Vicar, and Fr. Mark Mary, of EWTN's Life on the Rock, who was as engaging in person as he is on TV. Immaculate Heart Radio, one of the sponsors, covered the event live. Other sponsors included the Archdiocese of San Francisco and its Hispanic Pastoral Council, the Legion of Mary, Ignatius Press, and the Knights of Columbus, our security team in full Knights' regalia. Msgr. James Tarantino, Chairman of the Rosary Rally Committee, led us in song and cheers--for Our Lady, for her Divine Son, and for our Country's heritage of religious freedom and its continuance. As we travel, as we rest, as we work, as we sleep, let us pray the Rosary. It is most necessary in our day!! It will see us through!

Mirjana sees Our Lady
Mirjana experiences the Motherly love of Mary
September 2, 2013

St. Januarius

Dear Family of Mary!

Yesterday in his Wednesday General Audience for September 18, 2013, Our Holy Father spoke about the motherly face of the Church, and how much the Church must be like a mother. He shared three particular aspects of motherhood, mother as teacher, mother as companion, and mother as intercessor. His words were so beautiful, so full of the Holy Spirit, and so down to earth. As I read the excerpts of his talk, I felt that they complimented the message from Our Lady for September 2. So I will share the excerpts of Pope Francis' talk in connection with the message. Everything that the Pope says about the Church is reflected in Our Lady of Medjugorje! She is the Church in a real way. And she is Mother! Enjoy! (Quotes from Pope Francis are from the Vatican Information Service - 18-09-2013 - Year XXII - Num. 177)

TEACHER:

Our Lady told us:

"...I need humble apostles who, with an open heart, will accept the Word of God and help others to comprehend the meaning of their life alongside God's word. To be able to do this, my children, through prayer and fasting you must learn to listen with the heart and to learn to keep submitting yourselves. You must learn to keep rejecting everything that distances you from God's word and to yearn only for that which draws you closer to it..."

Pope Francis said:

The Pope began by considering what a mother does for her children. First of all, "she teaches us how to proceed in life ... she orientates us, she always tries to show us the right path in life in order to grow and become adults. And she does this with tenderness, with affection, with love, always - even when she tries to correct our path because we lose our way a little or take routes that might lead us to a fall".

"The Church does likewise: she orientates our lives, she offers us instruction on how to walk in the right way. Think of the Ten Commandments: they show us the route to follow if we are to mature, fixing certain cardinal points in our behavior. And these are the fruits of tenderness, of the very love that God gives us. You might say to me: but these are commandments! They are a list of negatives! I would like to invite you to read them, ... and then think about them positively. You will see that they concern our way of behaving towards God, towards ourselves and towards others, just as a mother teaches us how to live well. They remind us not to make material idols for ourselves, which then turn us into slaves; to remember God; to respect our parents; to be honest; to respect others ... Try to see them in this way and consider them as if they were the words and teachings a mother gives us in order to take a good path through life. A mother never teaches anything that is bad, she wants only what is best for her children, and the same is true of the Church".

COMPANION:

Our Lady also said:

"Dear children, I love you all. All of you, all of my children, all of you are in my heart. All of you have my motherly love and I desire to lead all of you to come to know God's joy. This is why I am calling you... Do not be afraid. I am here. You are not alone..."

Pope Francis continued:

Secondly, "when a child grows and becomes an adult ... and assumes his responsibilities ... he does what he wants, and at times, he may happen to stray away from the path. ... A mother always, in every situation, has the patience to continue to accompany her children. She is animated by the strength of love ... and even when [her children] make mistakes, she always finds a way of understanding them ... to help them. We say that a mother 'stands up and is counted' for her own children; that is, she always seeks to defend them".

"The Church is the same: she is a merciful mother who understands, who always tries to help, to give encouragement even when her children have made mistakes or continue to do so. She never closes the doors of her house to them: she does not judge, but rather offers God's forgiveness, she offers her love to invite her children to return to the right path and even when they have fallen into the deepest abyss, the Church is not afraid to enter into their darkest night with them in order to give them hope; the Church is not afraid to enter into our night when our soul and conscience are surrounded by darkness, to give us hope! Because the Church is our mother!"

INTERCESSOR:

And Our Lady said:

"I am imploring the Holy Spirit that, as you help others, you too may be healed. I am imploring Him that, through Him, you may be God's children and my apostles..."

And Pope Francis said:

Finally, "a mother also knows how to ask, to knock on every door for her children, without calculation but with love. And I think of how mothers know, most of all, how to knock on God's door! Mothers pray a lot for their own children, especially for those ... most in need, whose lives have taken dangerous or mistaken paths. ... The Church does likewise: through prayer, she places the lives of all her children in the hands of the Lord. Let us trust in the strength of prayer of the Mother Church: the Lord never remains indifferent. He always knows how to astonish us when we least expect us. The Mother Church knows this!"

"So, these are the thoughts I wanted to share with you today: we see in the Church a good mother who shows us the path to walk in life, who is always patient, merciful and understanding, and knows how to place us in God's hands".

Our Lady is the perfect Mother, and she is doing all these things Pope Francis mentions for us! And the Church, through her sacraments and her children, is also doing them, as a mother. We are so blessed to have such motherly care surrounding us! Thank you, Father in heaven for providing so much love for us!!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Our Lady's love

The Motherly love of Mary

September 18, 2013

Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children, I love you all. All of you, all of my children, all of you are in my heart. All of you have my motherly love and I desire to lead all of you to come to know God's joy. This is why I am calling you...." (September 2, 2013)

One last excerpt from Sr. Briege McKenna's testimony given on "Fruit of Medjugorje, Episode 30." Sr. Briege had a word from the Lord about Our Lady's love, her motherly love for each of us, and it explains beautifully how Our Lady can say that she loves all of us:

Our Lady is the Queen of Prophets. I remember one day in prayer getting this insight that at the foot of Calvary, that up until that moment Mary was known as the mother of Jesus. She was the biological mother of Jesus. That's what the people knew her as. At the very moment when Jesus said to John, "Behold your mother..." I got a vision of Mary's heart just expanding, so that the same love that she had for Jesus as a mother, at that very moment, as a gift from the Father, she was given for each of us. I said to Fr. Kevin, I had a sense of the tremendous love of the mother, so that she wants to protect her children. She is absolutely desperate. The Father gave her this mission at the foot of the Cross through Jesus to be the Mother of all Humanity. So it is only right that a mother will announce "Prepare yourself, keep away from danger, let me show you the road."

Isn't this beautiful! And now doesn't it make sense out of something Our Lady said to the visionaries years ago: "I love each one of you as much as I love my Son, Jesus." She loves us with the God-given love she received at the foot of the Cross. It is a grace which cannot be understood except by faith. God has provided for us the love of Mary, as our Mother. It is her Motherly love, the love she has for Jesus, now expanded to include each of us!! It is for these last days, the days of her Triumph that we are being given this awareness. It is so that we can help her to reach all her children, now! Reach them with her love! She calls us so that we can extend her call to others.

May we grow in our awareness of Mary's powerful, motherly love for each of us, so that strengthened by that love, we can give it to all those we meet. These are the days of her Triumph! It is a Triumph of love!!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Satan Exists, And Sometimes He Reveals Himself! By: Msgr. Charles Pope

from Courageous Priest

By:  Msgr. Charles Pope
It would seem that one of the more common tactics of Satan in our times is to hide and/or disguise himself. Indeed, in our times he is never more powerful than when he is denied or forgotten. In secular and rationalistic times why should he tip his hand too frequently or do anything that might cause further belief in the supernatural?
In other ages, more noted for faith, and where few denied either the existence of God nor the presences of demons and angels, it would seem that Satan was far more likely to use fear and would often disclose his presence more widely. Demonic torments, obsessions and possessions were more frequent, and people took the presence of demons for granted. Jesus Frequently drove demons out, and exorcism was once a widely used sacramental in the Church.
But the fact is, Satan is no less present today, in fact he may be more present given the widespread darkness of these times.
I can tell you I have surely had to wrestle with him, and there terrible torments for me in my mid thirties. There was a dark presence in my bedroom and I often could not sleep there for both fear and torment. I slept often in those years in my outer room with the hallway door open. In my own bedroom, terrible demons of anxiety would torment me and deprive me of sleep. And often, when I had finally found relief, and the demons, which may have been gone for weeks, would often suddenly assail me for no apparent cause or activating event.
It was all quite inexplicable from any merely psychological or physical reason. When people would notice my tense looks, I would just say that my anxiety demon had jumped my back, once again. It took me the better part of 15 years to be wholly free from their sudden influence.
Oh, I know there is a devil and that demons are about. I also know that the Lord has rescued me. Thank you Lord, I am largely free of anxiety and my terrors now.
As a spiritual director I can also say I have a few directee’s who are sorely assailed by demons, much like many of the saints of old were. They are not possessed, but they are tormented, just as I was. And it takes a constant barrage of deliverance prayers and holy water to keep things in check. I will not recount the details, for discretion prevents me from speaking of confidential matters. But let me just say, their torments are real. These are not crazy people.
Yes, Satan is real. I have surely encountered him, and know others who have as well.
But more often today with most, he is quieter. And we moderns are more prone to attribute physical causes to things rather than spiritual ones. Never mind that demons can effect physical things, Satan is quite content not to get the credit in these current times and draws a greater harvest from our foolish denial and redefinition of him and his effects.
You may count yourself lucky if you have never encountered Satan or demons in any obvious way. But don’t be too sure about that. Satan and his fallen demons often have their greatest power when we deny or ignore them, or insist that their work is simply explained by disease, insanity or foolish superstition. And while such things are sometimes operative, Satan prefers and relishes the fact that we so quickly conclude that today.

Dear Family of Mary!

"...For the sake of Jesus, for the sake of my Son, love those whom He has called and long for the blessing only from the hands which He has consecrated. Do not permit evil to come to reign. Anew I repeat - only alongside your shepherds will my heart triumph. Do not permit evil to separate you from your shepherds. Thank you." (Message to Mirjana, (09/02/13)

In listening to Sr. Briege McKenna's testimony on "Fruit of Medjugorje, Episode 30" I realized something. The Lord sent Our Lady to Medjugorje as an answer to the heart felt cry of a priest! Sr. Briege tells the story of the prophetic beginnings of Medjugorje, which took place at a priest's retreat in Rome in 1981. It is a fascinating account of how the Holy Spirit worked in the heart of the priests at a retreat in Rome, to prepare the way for Our Lady's coming. Listen to Sr. Briege:

Yes it was a very big surprise to me when I finally heard about my part in Medjugorje. I was in Brazil and I didn't know anything about it because I didn't remember the priest or the prophecy I had given him until I was down in Brazil about to give a retreat. I was invited by the government to speak to the government officials and I had really begged the Lord about what I was supposed to speak on. I got a message that I was supposed to promote the Rosary, penance, prayer, and I was to speak on Our Lady. So I went to this meeting where all the cabinet members were going to be. The president had been sick that year, and he asked me to come and pray with him. So I went there armed with a bag of Miraculous Medals. I felt Our Lady prompting me when I was with the president, to ask him if he was practicing his faith, and I felt a voice saying "Miraculous Medal" so I gave one to him. And he said, "Oh, sister, I'm going to consecrate the country to Our Lady! And after he told me about it, my interpreter and myself came out of the room, and I received a letter telling us about the apparitions in Medjugorje. I hadn't heard of it. It was about a year after Medjugorje had happened. You know you can be living in the world and not know these things are going on. So we read through the letter and we were absolutely stunned. My interpreter said, it was absolutely amazing that we got the very same message to give in this country which was about to be consecrated by the Vice President who was flying to Aparecida to consecrate it to Our Lady on the Feast of the Rosary, October 7.

And in the letter it said that Sr. Briege McKenna had been to Rome, and this is when I realized what had happened. I had been invited to go to the International Conference for Priests. And because I am in a ministry for priests, I was asked by the priests to pray with them. So what we did was put them into groups according to country, and so I met with the group of priests from what was then Yugoslavia, because all those countries were under Communism. Then it all came back...the memory is like a great computer, so when the right button is pressed it comes up! I remember a Friar in his Franciscan habit saying to me that he was frustrated because he was the youth director for the diocese of Mostar. (I had never heard of Mostar, or any of these places...) He went on to tell me that the youth were being seduced by the communists who were taking them to cell meetings and using all kinds of propaganda to draw them away from Christ and from what he was trying to give them. So he asked me to pray that he could find a way. And one of the things I always do in my ministry is to say that it is not good to know too much about the priest beforehand. I tell them, "You know, Father you don't have to tell me everything about yourself. Not that I don't want to hear your story, but we are human and we can be influenced by what we hear. I don't really trust myself, it is better not to know anything about you."

But it so happened that on that day as I prayed with him... (I get these images. I tell people, you know your imagination can run away with you, but the Lord can use the imagination like an overhead projector. He can through images on it that can be the key for that person's life.) And what I saw was this Croatian priest sitting in the main celebrant's chair in front, and he was looking into the body of the church, and it was packed with young people. And from behind him on the altar there were streams of water, like rivers flowing, and the young people were cupping it and drinking it, and after they would drink it they would go out and bring others in. I said to him, "You know Father you don't have to worry, because many young people will come to your church." I shared this with him. Later he said that I told him that I saw a church with two huge steeples. And when I said this, almost immediately, Father Emile Tardif, who is a Sacred Heart Priest, a missionary, whom I have known, and who has died since, God rest his soul...walked over and got this prophetic word. He could not have heard what I had just said because I was speaking to another priest who was translating to the Croatian Friar. But Fr. Tardif walked over and said, "You know, Father, Our Lady is going to visit your church."

Now the extraordinary thing about it was that Fr. Tomislav (the Croatian priest) was not in Medjugorje yet. Medjugorje hadn't happened yet. None of us knew about a church with two steeples. It was completely news to him, bizarre, and he was probably thinking to himself, what does all this mean. He says that when he was sent there by the bishop, after Fr. Jozo was sent to prison, being the brilliant man that he was, the hope was that he would find out that this was not really true. And like any priest should do, he began to see the external signs and thought there was something extraordinary going on, but seeing the outside of it doesn't always make you believe. You can see things and still not believe. So what he did was really begin to pray because when he thought of these beautiful children, how could this be fabricated??

He began to struggle. I always tell people to remember that when Our Lady was asked to be the Mother of Jesus, she used her intelligence because to conceive a child you have to be married and have relations with a man, and so she asked a question, "How can this be?" God didn't reject her for that but the beautiful thing was that immediately she said "yes". Well Fr. Tomislav really prayed to the Lord to show him, and then he got this word: He heard my voice like a gramophone, he heard my voice and then he remembered the image. And it wasn't that he just had to imagine, because he heard the French Canadian priest saying, "Our Mother will visit your church." And he said, at that moment his heart was converted and he realized that it was like the Old Testament. At the time the word didn't have an impact on him, but now he had to make a decision because he heard the message [and experienced the reality] ("Fruit of Medjugorje, Episode 30")

Well, Our Lady came to Medjugorje, the village with a church constructed with two big steeples, and she began to pour out graces upon everyone there. Now, 32 years later, the graces are still pouring out of the Church. The rivers of grace are only increasing, it seems. Sometimes it seems like the river that is described in Ezekiel 47. The waters are creating life where ever they flow, and they just get deeper and more life giving all the time!

It is wonderful to hear Sr. Briege recount the prophetic beginnings of Our Lady's coming. Thanks be to God for such a coming! We need our Mother so very much.

In Jesus, Mary and Jospeh!
