St. John of the Cross

Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children, today I call you to prepare your hearts for these days when the Lord particularly desires to purify you from all the sins of your past.

You, dear children, are not able by yourselves; therefore I am here to help you.  Pray, dear children! Only in this way will you be able to recognize all the evil that is in you and surrender it to the Lord so that the Lord may completely purify your hearts.  Therefore, dear children, pray without ceasing and prepare your hearts in penance and fasting."  (December 4, 1986)

"You, dear children, are not able by yourselves; therefore I am here to help you."  Is it not so painfully true that we are not able to prepare our hearts properly for the coming of God's purifying fire of love?  No matter how we try to repent, change, mend our ways, clear the playing field, stop the madness, or convert, we just are not able on our own to do it.  We are feeble, wounded creatures who are so blind that we don't even see our imperfections.  At least that is my experience!

And so the loving Father has sent Our Lady to help us.  She is the grace for our times.  She is present in Medjugorje as our Mother and helper.  Through her love she is providing a safe place for us to open our hearts to purification.  A good example of this is Fr. Donald Calloway.  Fr. Don was a lost teenager.  He used every kind of drug, did every wrong thing there is to do, and had no idea he needed to change.  But Our Lady reached into his life one night, and through her beautiful presence in a book on Medjugorje, she showed him the truth and helped him to open his heart to God's purifying love.  She stayed with Fr. Don through many years of rebuilding himself, almost from the bottom up!  And today he is a powerful priest, winning hearts for Jesus all over the world.

Fr. Don was not able to prepare his heart for God.  He didn't even know right from wrong. But Our Lady helped him.  She brought the light of Christ into his heart and taught him right from wrong.  And she wants to do the same for each of us.  We all need purification!  We all are a bit blind to our own impurities and sins.  We need help.

With Christmas approaching, let's ask Our Lady anew to help us to prepare our hearts for the purifying love of Jesus, so that we can surrender our sinfulness to Him, and be made pure and ready to receive Him at Christmas as our newborn Savior!

In Jesus and Mary,

Cathy Nolan
