Philippians 3:13-14 March 17, 2013 Fifth Sunday of Lent Dear Friends, I recall a story about two frightened people running away from a giant bear that is chasing them. One says to the other, "Can we outrun him?" The other replies, "I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you!" More seriously, we note that St. Paul on several occasions employs the imagery of sports and the Olympics to describe the Christian life. Life is a search, a journey, a struggle, a race, and we must persevere to the end. Jesus Christ becomes our way, our model, and the one Who accompanies us. During this season of Lent, we recall Luke 9:51: "When the days drew near for Him to be taken up, He (Jesus) set His face to go to Jerusalem." May we have the determination, energy, and drive of Paul. May we have the Spirit of Jesus to give us strength to continue our journey to the prize of everlasting life. |
Almighty God, You have set before us the great hope of eternal life. Grant that nothing may hinder the hope of eternal life from coming true. Grant that we may never lose the way through our self-will, that we may never abandon the struggle, that we may never drop out of the race, but that we may ever press forward to the goal of our high calling. We ask this through Christ our hope, our goal, and our Lord. Amen Rev. Peter Schineller, S.J., CMMB Board of Directors PS-Wishing you and yours a very blessed and Happy St. Patrick's Day! |
