From Courageous Priest: Bishop Paprocki: Bow Only if You Cannot Genuflect

His Excellency Most Reverend Thomas John Paprocki; Ars celebrandi et adorandi

On the Art of Celebrating the Eucharistic Liturgy

The art of celebrating the liturgy properly and adoring the Lord in the Eucharist devoutly (ars celebrandi et adorandi) is the key to fostering the active participation of the People of God in divine worship. (Part 2 of series)

genuflectionA reverent genuflection.

To bend the knee

28. In recent years, there has arisen the practice of bowing to the Lord present in the tabernacle, rather than genuflecting before him. Such a profound bow — made purposefully and reverently from the waist — can be a fitting way to reverence the Divine Majesty, but only if one cannot genuflect, which is not always the same as having some difficulty genuflecting.
29. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal provides that “if, however, the tabernacle with the Most Blessed Sacrament is situated in the sanctuary, the Priest, the Deacon, and the other ministers genuflect when they approach the altar and when they depart from it, but not during the celebration of Mass itself. Otherwise all who pass before the Most Blessed Sacrament genuflect, unless they are moving in procession. Ministers carrying the processional cross or candles bow their heads instead of genuflecting.”17
30. To genuflect means, literally, “to bend the knee.” In the ancient world the knee symbolized the strength of a man. If a man is struck in the knee, he stumbles and falls; his strength is taken from him. When we genuflect before the Lord, our strength is not taken from us; rather, we willingly bend our strength to the Lord and place ourselves humbly in his service. When we bend our knee to the Lord of heaven and earth we should hear the words of the Psalmist ever in our hearts, “Lord, I am your servant,” remembering that before the Lord every knee must bend (Psalm 116:16; cf. Philippians 2:10).
31. I must note here, that as important as the Eucharist is to the Church, and that the proper reverence to the Blessed Sacrament is “to bend the knee,” to genuflect, it does not replace another reverence made by all between the opening and the closing processions. During Liturgy between these processions, all who enter or leave the sanctuary, or who pass before the altar, make a deep bow, a bow from the waist toward the altar. Neither a deep bow or a genuflection is made to the tabernacle within the Mass between the opening and closing processions.18

How to Genuflect

32. In order to keep these words in our hearts and put them into practice, it is helpful to be purposeful and deliberate in the moment of genuflection. One may avoid a hasty and irreverent slide through an attempted genuflection by consciously touching the right knee to the ground and humbly pausing momentarily before rising again. In doing so, we not only pay proper respect to the Lord, but we also remind ourselves in whose presence we are.

33rd Anniversary of Our Lady's coming in Medjugorje

Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! I come to you as a Mother with gifts. I come with love and mercy. Dear children, mine is a big heart. In it, I desire all of your hearts, purified by fasting and prayer. I desire that, through love, our hearts may triumph together. I desire that through that triumph you may see the real Truth, the real Way and the real Life. I desire that you may see my Son. Thank you."  (March 18, 2007)

Thank you, Blessed Mother Mary, for 33 years of your coming. You have come to us every day for these many years, with the consistency that only a mother can show. Every day you come. You come. This is continuous miracle of Medjugorje. You come.

I want to share an email written a few years ago by Mary Nolan (our daughter). Mary lived in Medjugorje for 4 years, caring for the children in Mother's Village. She captures in a few words the wonder of Mary's coming. On this anniversary, I would like to share her thoughts with you, because they simply hit the nail on the head:

In my own heart, I think I am beginning, even after all these years, to understand what is happening in Medugorje. It hit me hard as I was walking to the Church last night (just at the time of the apparition). I was looking out at the mountains with a royal feeling by being alone with them. And I reflected back on a conversation that I had with one of the orphans in the village just a half hour before. I was playing with them in the garden; as I was swinging little Jerko I asked him to tell me the names of the people he loved (a game we sometimes play so we can think up silly reasons why). He said, "Mary" (meaning me, not the Mother of God), and I asked him why. He answered, "sto je dosla," meaning: because she came. It's a sweet and normal kind of answer a kid would give to the person who is pleasing him at the moment. But as I was in a regal moment alone with the mountains, the meaning of that message hit me. Maybe that is why [the villagers] all love the Mother of God so much...

Back to the wisdom of little Jerko - - he said that he loved me because I came. I do so little for him but the fact that someone comes again and again is enough for him! What is Our Lady doing here?!!! Why do people love her so much?

"zato sto je dosla."

Because she came, because she comes like a mother. And what is it that a mother does to show her love? She comes....then she cleans, fixes, and feeds us and does whatever needs to be done.  There is so much more to understand in her presence. But the fact that she comes at all is the beginning of every reason. (Even the fact that she comes again and again, punctually, each day at the same time...something which has bothered me, too, is part of that reason.) This isn't just a school of love, it is a home. That is where the mother teaches.

This hit me hard; in that moment I acknowledged a relationship with Our Lady. I have always dismissed her as a holy woman, the Mother of God, and one of my dad's friends. (Who wants to chase after their dad's friend?) By just being a mother, not explaining herself, but coming each day, she spoke to my heart. Long ago, she gave me a structure, Mother's Village, in the building of my life which was to be the school that taught me how to recognize a mother. I knew she took years to ready me to recognize her. I felt deep gratitude for that.

And so, what then? Where is this mother leading us? Not too far, just back to the Church, to settle us there, that we might wait in health and hope for the coming again of Christ. The message of peace is not supposed to be ecstasy or Divine Revelation; it is simply to bring us back to the Church, our home. What wisdom in God to send His mother to do this. Who better to send than the housekeeper?

Now, allow me to be dramatic (as though this whole email isn't already). All of this is about Christ, a long, drawn out side drama to remind us of what happened on this earth.

St. Thomas said, in defending the reason for the Incarnation of Christ against Muslim arguments (among other things) that God becoming man reveals to men their own dignity by revealing to them that they are loved. "And nothing provokes love so much as to know that one is loved." Perceiving this love from God is the real beginning of our knowledge of God. What is His greatness to us, without His love? What is his majesty without his goodness? Why should we try to know Him whom it is beyond us to know? He gives us the reason. And it is thus that God achieves his own glory. As St. Irenaeus tells us with intense clarity, "The glory of God is a living man, and the life of man consists in the vision of God."

"zato sto je dosla."

Because you come, Mother, we love you. We love you because you love us first. You come. You come. Thank you! Lead us to your Son. Help us to live in Him and His peace!

Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
(Given by Our Lady to Jelena Vasilj, 11/28/1983)

O Immaculate Heart of Mary, overflowing
with goodness, Show us your love for us.
May the flame of your heart, Oh Mary,
Descend upon all peoples.
We love you immensely.
Impress in our hearts a true love.
May our hearts yearn for you.
Oh Mary, sweet and humble of heart,
Remember us when we sin.
You know that all mankind are sinners.
Through your most sacred and maternal heart,
Cure us from every spiritual illness.
Make us capable of looking at the beauty of your maternal heart,
And that, thus, we may be converted
to the flame of your heart. Amen

Rejoice, everyone! We have been so loved all these years! Alleluia!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Bishop Paprocki: I Direct the Eucharist be Placed in the Center of the Sanctuary

His Excellency Most Reverend Thomas John Paprocki; Ars celebrandi et adorandi

On the Art of Celebrating the Eucharistic Liturgy

Mother of the Eucharist
The art of celebrating the liturgy properly and adoring the Lord in the Eucharist devoutly (ars celebrandi et adorandi) is the key to fostering the active participation of the People of God in divine worship. (Part 1 of series)

The Reservation and Adoration of the Holy Eucharist

18. While the Holy Eucharist is reserved in the tabernacle of every parish church in our diocese, the faithful in some places do not frequently come to pray before the tabernacle to be in the presence of the Lord. Several reasons for this certainly exist, but one among them is the reality that the tabernacle is not always easily found in many of our churches today. Over the past few decades, tabernacles all too often were moved from prominent places in the sanctuary to obscure and remote rooms that in some cases were previously supply closets.
19. The present legislation of the Church concerning the placement of the tabernacle states, “In accordance with the structure of each church and legitimate local customs, the Most Blessed Sacrament should be reserved in a tabernacle in a part of the church that is truly noble, prominent, conspicuous, worthily decorated, and suitable for prayer.”13
Regrettably, this is not always followed.
20. In some churches and chapels, the tabernacle is set on a “side” altar in such a way that the tabernacle, though noble, is neither prominent nor readily visible. The same is often the case with the location of some Eucharistic chapels, whether they be in the nave itself, behind the sanctuary, or in another room. They are not always prominent or readily visible.
21. The great majority of our parish churches and chapels were designed to house the tabernacle in the center of the sanctuary; removing the tabernacle from these sanctuaries has left a visible emptiness within the sacred space, almost as though the building itself longed for the return of the tabernacle. With the removal of the tabernacle from the center of the sanctuary, the architectural integrity of many churches and chapels has been severely compromised.14
22. Pope Benedict XVI wrote in his Post-Synodal Exhortation on the Eucharist in 2007, “The correct positioning of the tabernacle contributes to the recognition of Christ’s real presence in the Blessed Sacrament. Therefore, the place where the Eucharistic species are reserved, marked by a sanctuary lamp, should be readily visible to everyone entering the church. … In any event, final judgment on these matters belongs to the Diocesan Bishop.”15
23. With this in mind, in order that more of the faithful will be able to spend time in adoration and prayer in the presence of the Eucharistic Lord, I direct that in the churches and chapels of our diocese, tabernacles that were formerly in the center of the sanctuary, but have been moved, are to be returned as soon as possible to the center of the sanctuary in accord with the original architectural design. Tabernacles that are not in the center of the sanctuary or are otherwise not in a visible, prominent and noble space are to be moved to the center of the sanctuary; tabernacles that are not in the center of the sanctuary but are in a visible, prominent and noble space may remain.
24. Some may object to this directive and point, by means of example, to the Basilica of Saint Peter in Rome to suggest that tabernacles should not be located in the sanctuary. Saint Peter’s, of course, is different from the average church or chapel in many respects. Chief among these differences is the number of tourists who visit the Basilica each day, with no intention of praying to the Lord therein. These tourists enter this remarkable edifice built to the honor of the Prince of the Apostles simply to look around, to see the architectural beauty and perhaps to see some aspect of Catholic worship, but not to pray. The Eucharist is reserved in a special chapel into which tour groups are not permitted so that the reverence and adoration due the Eucharist can be properly accorded him by pilgrims seeking to speak with him.
25. At the same time, it should be noted that the Eucharistic chapel in Saint Peter’s is itself larger than many of our parish churches. There is more than enough room to accommodate all those who wish to pray in the presence of the Eucharistic Lord in the chapel; it is not always so with every Eucharistic chapel in this Diocese.
26. This deep-seated desire to be in the presence of the Lord resounds in the heart of every person, even if they cannot at first name this desire for what it truly is. We should therefore do all that we can to help them encounter the Lord who waits for them to seek and find him. In this regard, I strongly encourage keeping our churches open to the public in so far as can be done with the safety of people and the building in mind. Pope Francis spoke about this in his Apostolic Exhortation on the Joy of the Gospel, Evangelii Gaudium: “The Church is called to be the house of the Father, with doors always wide open. One concrete sign of such openness is that our church doors should always be open, so that if someone, moved by the Spirit, comes there looking for God, he or she will not find a closed door” (no. 47).
27. Regularly scheduled times for exposition of the Most Holy Eucharist in a monstrance or pyx, as well as an annual solemn and lengthier exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament, are highly commended as ways to stimulate the faithful to spiritual union with Christ which culminates in sacramental communion. The norms in the liturgical books for Eucharistic exposition and benediction are to be observed.16

Dear Mary TV Family.....

Lots of good news!

Don't miss Mary TV's Live streaming during the Anniversary..... In fact, you want to go to www.marytv.tv right now!

Tell everyone also about our special Anniversary episode of Fruit of Medjugorje;

An Archive for the English Masses can now be found at the top of the web page....

And in "Medjugorje 2014 Trip" under "Archived Rosaries" in the left hand column you can pray with us at the end of May as a fiber optic cable is being hooked up to a Mary TV in Medjguorje!   Saint John Paul II came through - his miracle after being made an official saint in the Church - totally unexpected to Tom Matasso and to me! (Tom tells me very few places in the US can get fiber optics!).

And guess what Pope Francis prayer intention for the month of May for the whole church was:
  • Media. That the media may be instruments in the service of truth and peace.
  • Mary's Guidance. That Mary, Star of Evangelization, may guide the Church in proclaiming Christ to all nations.
You can also get a report on it in the June 6, 2014 Tea with Rosie:

Thanks to Kristen Mackay we now have a QR code for the Mary TV's website (it's attached to the PDF near the top of the web page)...

Let's pray for many graces for each other during this wonderful Anniversary - 33 years of Our Lady's daily apparitions in Medjugojre!   Even more profound than the apparition is her presence with us: "I have descended among you!" (6/2/14

God bless you!

The Nativity of St. John the Baptist

Dear Family of Mary!

We have finished our novena in honor of Our Lady of Medjugorje, Queen of Peace. These two days (June 24 and 25) are a time of celebration and thanksgiving. I can think of no better way to approach these days than by listening to Our Lady's messages. I have gathered several of her messages that speak about thanksgiving. She will guide us into the right frame of mind and heart. We have only to quiet our hearts and begin to listen and give thanks!

"Dear children! Today I invite you all to rejoice in the life which God gives you. Little children, rejoice in God, the Creator, because He has created you so wonderfully. Pray that your life be joyful thanksgiving which flows out of your heart like a river of joy. Little children, give thanks unceasingly for all that you possess, for each little gift which God has given you, so that a joyful blessing always comes down from God upon your life. Thank you for having responded to my call." August 25, 1988

"Dear children! Also today I call you to pray, pray, pray. Only in prayer will you be near to me and my Son, and you will see how short this life is. In your heart a desire for Heaven will be born. Joy will begin to rule in your heart and prayer will begin to flow like a river. In your words there will only be thanksgiving to God for having created you and the desire for holiness will become a reality for you. Thank you for having responded to my call." August 25, 2006

"Dear children! I wish to tell you to thank God for all the graces which God has given you. For all the fruits, thank the Lord, and glorify him! Dear children, learn to give thanks in little things and then you will be able to give thanks also for the big things. Thank you for having responded to my call." October 3, 1985

"Dear children! I am calling you to a complete surrender to God. Let everything that you possess be in the hands of God. Only in that way shall you have joy in your heart. Little children, rejoice in everything that you have. Give thanks to God because everything is God's gift to you. That way in your life you shall be able to give thanks for everything and discover God in everything even in the smallest flower. Thank you for having responded to my call." April 25, 1989

"Dear children! Today I invite you to accept with seriousness and to live the messages which I am giving you. I am with you and I desire, dear children, that each one of you be ever closer to my heart. Therefore, little children, pray and seek the will of God in your everyday life. I desire that each one of you discover the way of holiness and grow in it until eternity. I will pray for you and intercede for you before God that you understand the greatness of this gift which God is giving me that I can be with you. Thank you for having responded to my call." April 25, 1990

We thank you, our Father in heaven, for sending our Gospa to us. She has descended among us. And we are glad. We are filled with joy. We are astounded at Your mercy in giving us such a Mother. Today we want to just stop and say "Thank you!" We can only receive with humility and wonder, this great gift.

Thank you, Jesus our Lord, for sharing Your Mother with us. She has touched our hearts. She has warmed our souls. She has resurrected our memories, helping us to again remember being children of God. She has given us hope, a future in heaven with You. She has shown us Your salvation, and led us into your Kingdom by her love.

Thank you, Holy Spirit our Paraclete, for accompanying Your spouse in her sojourn among us. Thank you for guiding Mary and inspiring her as she gives us messages, so that her words bring us the power of Your life. Thank you, Oh Holy Spirit, for breathing new life into our souls, dead from sin, through the Sacrament of Confession, so generously available in Medjugorje. Thank you for confirming in us our conversions, our holy choices, and our holy desires. Your power, which is love, is changing us.

Thank you, Mother Mary, for saying "yes" to the Father's plan, and coming to Medjugorje. Thank you for loving us so much. Thank you for choosing us. Thank you for never giving up on us. And thank you for staying with us. Stay, dearest Mother, Stay!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Novena to Our Lady, Queen of Peace, Day 9

Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children, As the Queen of Peace, I desire to give peace to you, my children, true peace which comes through the heart of my Divine Son. As a mother I pray that wisdom, humility and goodness may come to reign in your hearts; that peace may reign; that my Son may reign. When my Son will be the ruler in your hearts, you will be able to help others to come to know Him. When heavenly peace comes to rule over you, those who are seeking it in the wrong places, thus causing pain to my motherly heart, will recognize it. My children, great will be my joy when I see that you are accepting my words and that you desire to follow me. Do not be afraid, you are not alone. Give me your hands and I will lead you. Do not forget your shepherds. Pray that in their thoughts they may always be with my Son, who called them to witness Him. Thank you." ( April 2, 2012)

Today is the last day of our novena to Our Lady in honor of 33 years of her presence in Medjugorje. For our meditation today I would like to share part of a homily that was given at the English Mass on June 21, 2014. It was given by a priest from Ireland, whose name I do not know. It sums up what Our Lady is doing in Medjugorje very well. It will help us prepare for the Feast of John the Baptist and for the 33rd Anniversary!

Homily at English Mass, June 21, 2014:

A number of years ago, when I was a student, I met a priest from one of the South American countries. We were talking and I asked him about his country, and I asked him what percent of the population was Catholic. He said it is 100% Catholic, but 95 % of the people believe in Our Lady of Guadalupe and the other 5% believe in God. One of the things that has struck me so forcefully since coming to Medjugorje is that in all of the messages of Our Lady, and in everything that happens here, the focus is always drawn to her Son. That is what she wants. I saw it yesterday in the beautiful Veneration of the Cross. We saw it so movingly on Thursday, the Feast of Corpus Christi, with the beautiful and moving Corpus Christi procession, and the reverence that there is here for Jesus, present in the Eucharist.

As we were walking around the streets on Thursday night, I thought about something that I read a number of years ago. Many of you here may have heard of Sr. Briege McKenna. Briege McKenna is an Irish Franciscan Sister who in her own life had an extraordinary experience of healing. And as a result of that, she has dedicated her life to traveling the world, sharing the message of the Gospel. And a number of years ago, she wrote a wonderful book called "Miracles Do Happen". And in one of the chapters of that book, called "The Transforming Power of the Eucharist", she describes an incident. She was in South America and a priest that she knew invited her to his parish and he asked her to come with him on a journey, it took them hours to get there on very rough terrain, to a community in a very poor area where he was able to go only once a year to celebrate Mass.

She describes the scene as they arrive on the mountain side area... there is no church, no semblance even of a church... there is a broken down table for an altar. But there are hundreds and hundreds of people walking towards this spot for this one Mass that they have every year. She describes the poverty and the squalor and she was really disturbed by it. In her own words she said, she had been a daily communicate since she was twelve years of age, but this one Mass changed her life. And the reason for that was that just before the Mass, she noticed an old woman coming with a little bundle in her arms and she went up to this woman, thinking this was a gift she was bringing for the priest, and the woman opened the bundle and inside was a little boy who was very badly burned and was screaming with pain. Then the priest and Sr. Briege said a little prayer with him and the priest suggested that the lady place the little boy under the make-shift altar for the Mass. That she did.

Briege goes on to describe the extraordinary reverence with which these people prayed, particularly when it came to the Consecration. When the Mass was over Briege went up to see this woman and to see the little boy, but he was nowhere to be seen when she got to the altar. And she met the woman and she said, "Where is the little boy?" And she pointed to him. He had crept out from under the altar and was playing with the other little children. And Briege McKenna looked at the woman and she just couldn't believe it. She said, "What happened?" And the woman said, "Sister, what do you mean, what happened. Didn't Jesus come?"

I read that passage a few times and I thought I had missed something here. Then I realized it was my own lack of faith that didn't allow me to believe what those people in their poverty had no difficulty believing, in the healing power of Jesus in the Eucharist, that that could happen and did happen. So I am very conscious of that here. We have this privilege of celebrating the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. He comes to us in the most intimate way, and comes to all of us, whatever our state in life. Whatever state our life is in, in our brokenness, in our pain, in our grief, in our sinfulness, He wants to be intimately united with us.

One last little thought, a few months ago, as you will probably remember, President Barak Obama paid a visit to Pope Francis in the Vatican. The next day it was worldwide news and there was one picture in particular of these two powerful men meeting together in the Pope's study, sharing a joke. Their faces were filled with laughter. And that morning I visited one of the schools in my parish at home, in a little village called Aral, a beautiful little school with beautiful children.

And in one of the classrooms the teacher was showing them that picture on a white board screen of the two men meeting each other. And he said to the class, "Which of those men do you think is the most powerful man in the world?" And one little girl, whose grandparents are here today, spoke up and said, "Sir. It's neither of them, it's the guy hanging on the cross behind them."

That to me is what Medjugorje does. It reminds us, it's the Guy on the Cross, it's the One present to us in the Word of God today, it's the One present here in the congregation, but most of all it's the One present here on the altar every time we come to Mass. Because every time we come to Mass, heaven and earth meet together in the most powerful way. That is the message of Our Lady of Medjugorje. It is also the message of St. John the Baptist, whose feast day we celebrate next week, and who is so important here in this village. He was the one who gave us the line, "Behold the Lamb of God. Behold Him who takes away the sins of the world." I think if we could all go away from here, those of us who have been privileged to be invited to this beautiful place, if we could go away from here with just our faith in the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist strengthened just by a morsel that would make His mother very happy. (Homily at English Mass in Medjugorje, 06/21/14)

Dearest Mother, you are our Queen of Peace. We want to submit ourselves to you as our Queen. We believe that you have come to bring us to your Son, Jesus, so that He can be our King, the King of our hearts. He is present in the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. May we draw near to Him through your guidance and intercession! Mary, Our Queen, bring us to your Son!

Let us pray:

Prayer to the Queen of Peace

Mary, Mother of God and Our Mother, Queen of Peace!
You came to us to lead us to God.
Obtain for us the grace
not only to say:
"Be it done to me according to Your word!",
but to live it, as You did.
Into Your hands we put our hands,
so that You may lead us to Him
amidst these afflictions and woes.
Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Creed, 7 Our Fathers, 7 Hail Marys, 7 Glory Bes....

Veni Creator Spiritus - Come Holy Spirit
Come Holy Spirit, Creator, come
best gift of God above,
the living spring, the living fire,
sweet unction and true love.

Thou Who are called the Paraclete,
from Thy bright heavenly throne,
come, take possession of our souls,
and make them all Thine own.

Thou who are sevenfold in Thy grace,
finger of God's right hand,
His promise, teaching little ones
to speak and understand.

O guide our minds with Thy blest light,
with love our hearts inflame;
and with Thy strength, which never decays,
confirm our mortal frame.

Far from us drive our deadly foe,
true peace unto us bring,
and through all perils lead us safe
beneath Thy sacred wing.

Through Thee may we the Father know,
through Thee the eternal Son,
and Thee the Spirit of them both,
thrice-blessed Three in One.

All glory to the Father be,
with his co-equal Son:
the same to Thee, great Paraclete,
while endless ages run. Amen.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of Your love.
- Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created.
- And You shall renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray: God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit did instruct the hearts of thy faithful, grant that by that same Spirit we may be always truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us pray the Rosary!!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

From Opus Bono Sacerdotii: An Urgent Appeal

Work for the Good of the Priesthood
Deacon Giglio
An URGENT appeal:

Just last week, Pete received a phone call from a priest who was found nearly dead in his apartment after the police broke down the door following Pete’s phone call to the local authorities.  Father needs to
be admitted to a treatment center immediately, before this happens again – and it will happen again, even Father admits that!

The cost for us to transport Father to the treatment center that has agreed to take him pro bono is approximately $4,000.  Would you
please consider a special 911 donation for Father Bob so that we
can get him to the treatment center as soon as possible?

Please consider helping us now:
