SCRIPTURE COMMENTARY #168

"So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven." (Matt. 5:16)

APOSTOLIC ZEAL: By both figures our Lord signified that the apostles must be entirely devoted to their high calling. Even as salt imparts its savor by being itself dissolved, and light can only give light by being consumed, so were the apostles to devote their bodies and souls entirely to their vocation. They were to be consumed, and, if necessary, to give up their lives for the conversion of the world.
