Pope Benedict XVI: "Our Lady looks at others from the heart"

"The Immaculate Mother repeats to the men of our time: do not be afraid, Jesus conquered evil, He conquered it at the roots, freed us from its domination." Benedict XVI reminded the faithful yesterday evening in Piazza di Spagna in Rome, after having taken the traditional floral tribute to the Immaculate, represented by the large bronze statue placed in 1857 in the heart of the city.

Benedict XVI: Our Lady teaches us to open ourselves to God's action, to look at others as He looks at them: from the heart. And to watch them with mercy, with love, and with infinite tenderness, especially the loneliest, the abused and the exploited.

Mary reminds us of the victory of Grace over sin, the Pope added, melting our hearts, hardened and accustomed to evil that is "re-told and amplified" by the media every day. She helps us to "rediscover and defend the depth of the person, because in Her there is perfect transparency of the soul in the body." The people that make up the city have faces, not just bodies, and each has a history that is sacred and demands the greatest respect, Benedict XVI recalled . It is necessary to resist the temptation to be mere spectators of city life, "condemning, complaining, criticizing, and instead become active participants, capable of responding to evil with good.
