Clergy from the Philippines, Nigeria, Argentina, Spain, India, and even an Anglican professor from the United States, gathered together under the shadow of St. Peter’s Basilica in March to present papers in support of a solemn declaration of a fifth Marian Dogma. The day-long conference, hosted by Inside the Vatican magazine, explored the titles of “Coredemptrix,” “Mediatrix of All Graces” and “Advocate of the People of God,” and how the Church’s definition of Mary with these titles would affect the faith of both Catholics and non-Catholics alike. The proposal of a new Marian dogma has provoked many doubts in numerous ecclesial environments, and for the moment Benedict XVI has not publicly commented on it. In this interview granted to H2onews, some of the conference participants explain their motivations. Archbishop Malayappan Chinnappa of Madras and Mylapore, India, stressed that it is important to understand that giving Mary the title of “Coredemptrix” is not meant to take away from the redemption offered by Jesus Christ. “We are not equalizing anyone -- Jesus is the Redeemer, Mary is a co-redeemer. Whenever we put this word co-/cum/with, Mary is brought to the second place. She’s a cooperator, a coworker with the Redeemer her only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. So, in this sense, there should be no fear on the part of the Catholic Church to declare and define Mary as a ‘Coredemptrix.’” Dr. Judith Gentle, an Anglican member of Our Lady of Walsingham Mariological Society in the United Kingdom and a professor of theology at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, spoke of the Marian dogma as a recognition of the role Mary was given by Christ. “I think it is not just the title, but by declaring the title we give our ‘fiat’ to what is already true in reality. So we’re saying to the Lord, her divine Son: we want your mother to play the role that you had given her to play, which is as our spiritual mother. “We are saying to the Lord: we are ready, we are beholding your mother; we want her to act on our behalf in the fullness that you have destined her for all eternity.” The Archbishop of Lipa, in the Philippines, Rev. Ramon Arguelles, spoke about why the dogma is important to his country and what it will mean for the rest of the world. “The faith is very Marian in the Philippines. Now we are very active in this movement for the 5th Marian dogma, because we think that our country and the rest of the world need very much the Blessed Mother.”
