VATICAN - 

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – At the close of the General Audience today, October 20, Pope Benedict XVI has announced a consistory for the creation of 24 new cardinals, who will be elevated to the ranks of the College of Cardinals this coming November 20. “The Cardinals have the task of assisting the Successor of the Apostle Peter in accomplishing his mission of perpetual and visible source and foundation of unity of the faith and communion in the Church," said the Holy Father, who then read the names of the new cardinals:


1.Archbishop Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Cause of Saints; 
2.Archbishop Antonios Naguib, Patriarch of Alexandria of the Copts, Egypt;
3.Archbishop Robert Sarah, President of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum;
4.Archbishop Franceso Monterisi, Archpriest of St Paul’s Outside-the-Walls;
5.Archbishop Fortunato Baldelli, Major Penitentiary;
6.Archbishop Raymond Leo Burke, Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal

7.Archbishop Kurt Koch, President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity;

The Holy Father also elevated to the College of Cardinals “two prelates and two clergymen, who are distinguished for their generosity and dedication in serving the Church." They are: 
1.Archbishop emeritus to the Spanish Armed Forces José Manuel Estepa Llaurens, Spain;
2.Archbishop Elio Sgreccia, President emeritus of the Pontifical Academy for Life, Italy; 
3.Archbishop Walter Brandmuller, President emeritus of the Pontifical Committee for Historic Sciences, Germany
4.Archbishop Domenico Bartolucci, former Director of the Pontifical Choir, Italy.

Finally, Benedict XVI recalled that "the list of new cardinals reflects the universality of the Church, they, as they come from various parts of the world and carry out different tasks in the service of the Holy See or in direct contact with the People of God as Fathers and Pastors of particular Churches." He also called for prayers for the new Cardinals, "calling on the special intercession of the Blessed Mother of God, so that they may be bear fruit in carrying out their ministry in the Church."
