The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! Today I call you to unite with Jesus in prayer. Open your heart to Him and give Him everything that is in it: joys, sorrows and illnesses. May this be a time of grace for you. Pray, little children, and may every moment belong to Jesus. I am with you and I intercede for you. Thank you for having responded to my call." (March 25, 2002)

Today is both First Friday and the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus! I thought it would be good to refresh our memories about the practice of the Nine First Fridays, inspired by Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque. The practice consists of attending Holy Mass on the First Friday of the month for nine consecutive months, receiving Communion, going to Confession to prepare for the Communion, and spending time in adoration

of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, where possible. The Lord inspired St. Margaret Mary to begin this devotion, to help people to grow in love with Him through visualizing His Human Heart which suffered for us. I like this explanation that I found at the website of the Sacred Heart Legion:

"The devotion of all devotions is love for Jesus Christ. A devout author laments the sight of so many persons who pay attention to various devotions, but neglect devotion to the Sacred Heart. There are many preachers and confessors who say great things, but speak little of love for Jesus Christ.

"The love of Jesus Christ ought to be the principal devotion of a Catholic. Lack of devotion to the Sacred Heart is the reason for frequent relapses into serious sin, because people pay scant attention, and are not sufficiently encouraged to acquire the love of Jesus, which is the golden cord which unites and binds the soul to God. The Father will love us in the same proportion as we love Jesus Christ. We will never be formed in the image of the Lord, nor even desire to be formed in His image, if we do not meditate upon the love which Jesus Christ has shown us.

"For this purpose it is related in the life of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a nun of the Visitation Order, that our Savior revealed to this servant His wish that the devotion and the Feast of His Sacred Heart should be established and propagated in the Church. In this way, devout believers would, by their adoration and prayer, make reparation for the injuries His Heart constantly receives from ungrateful humanity when He is exposed in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar. It is also related that while this devout nun was praying before the Blessed Sacrament, Jesus Christ showed her His Heart surrounded by thorns, with a cross on the top, and in a throne of flames.

" 'Behold the Heart,' she reports that Jesus spoke to her, 'that has loved humanity, and has spared nothing for them, even to consuming itself to give them pledges of Its love, but which receives from the majority of people, no other return but ingratitude, and insults toward the Sacrament of Love.'

"The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is nothing more than an exercise of love toward our loving Savior. Therefore, the principal object of this devotion, the spiritual object of this devotion, is the love with which the Heart of Jesus is inflamed toward all." (http://sacredheartlegion.com/friday.htm)

Here is a short prayer of reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus:

Most loving Jesus, when I consider Your tender Heart and see It full of mercy and tenderness toward sinners, my own heart is filled with joy and confidence that I shall be so kindly welcomed by You. Unfortunately, how many times have I sinned! But now, with Peter and with Magdalene, I weep for my sins and detest them because they offend You, infinite Goodness.

Mercifully grant me pardon for them all; and let me die rather than offend You again; at least let me live only to love You in return. Amen.

Our Lady once told us:
Sacred Heart

"Dear children! This evening I pray you especially to venerate the Heart of my Son, Jesus. Make reparation for the wound inflicted on the Heart of my Son. That Heart is offended by all kinds of sins. Thank you for coming this evening." (April 5, 1984)

Today, let's open our hearts with love to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and receive His love for us. This will quench His thirst for souls, and bring Him great joy!
