GROWING up at a time when Pentecostalism was strong in Christian communities and on television, it was common to hear evangelical Christians quote from today’s first reading from Romans:
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Rom 10:9)

Mary TV Daily Reflection 11/29/2013

you are not alone
Open the doors of your heart...

Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! Today I call all of you to prayer. Open the doors of your heart profoundly to prayer, little children, to prayer with the heart; and then the Most High will be able to act upon your freedom and conversion will begin. Your faith will become firm so that you will be able to say with all your heart: 'My God, my all.' You will comprehend, little children, that here on earth everything is passing. Thank you for having responded to my call." (November 25, 2013)

Since we received this message on Monday, we have been trying to respond to it, not with words but with actions. We will again try to take some time for extra prayer today. Fr. Slavko will speak one last time about prayer with the heart, about profound prayer:

In a message of 28th March (1985) Our Lady said: "In prayer you will find the deepest joy." But precisely in that prayer is where you find Our Lord.

Prayer is a meeting with God speaking to us, leading us, giving us light, saving us. Our Lord who introduced himself as a Father and Jesus Christ as our Brother, as our Friend. In our meeting with Him we must have a deeper joy and one of us has anything against this deep joy.

We must wonder how to pray, how to meet this father, this brother, this friend? God revealed Himself in Jesus Christ.

Before this [message], Our Lady also said another thing: "Pray with your hearts," that is not only to repeat something in words. An example: in a kitchen you can find every kind of food, but you can still starve if you do not eat well or if you do not eat at all. Many people pray but do not feel this joy, this deep peace. Why? We must say: They do not pray as they should, they do not meet Our Lord as they ought to in order to receive this joy. What may be their predicament to pray and not feel anything?

If you want to meet one of your friends, you must look for him, you must find time to speak to him, to listen to him... If you want to have a satisfactory meeting you make preparations so that you will not be disturbed. If you do not have the time, if you do not try to arrange the meeting, if you do not try to say anything to the other person, you cannot have a meeting even on a human level.

The same thing can be said, I think, also of prayer, if you are determined to pray. At the beginning of her apparitions, Our Lady used to recommend: "Recite the Creed". If you have made up your minds to carry out whatever Our Lady has asked of you, you must get ready; that is, find the time and take time when you can be for God alone, when the telephone cannot interrupt you, nor your wife...a little corner in your house, and say: this half hour is only for prayer. Find the time, the place and begin as you can.

I am telling you to begin as you can. In the beginning Our Lady requested the Creed, seven Our Father's and fasting one day of the week. They are the concrete and simple things to begin with. And anyone who has begun like this finding every day a little time for prayer, has been able to learn how to pray. We must begin as when we started to pronounce the first words with our mothers. We must begin as we can and go on continuously in this way. Look for a time, a place; try to speak to and listen to God. In this concrete manner it is possible to go deeply into prayer and you will, from day to day, feel a mood for prayer. (Fr. Slavko Barbaric. March 30, 1985, Medjugorje)

How do we meet this Father, this Brother, this Friend? We must work to find the time, the place, and the quietness of heart to meet our Lord. It is worth the effort. It will help us to rid our hearts of our practical atheism, and to fill our lives with the joy of God!

Thank you, dearest Mother, for coming to teach us to prayer. Let our efforts to enter into profound prayer be blessed and fruitful! We need prayer of the heart!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

November 28, 2013 A.D.

Today in the United States, we celebrate the feast of Thanksgiving. All across the country, families are preparing their special meals, often driving long distances to be near loved ones, family, and friends. At Caritas, we do not need to drive far to be near those we love, for Our Lady has risen up here a special place, where a group of sinners can be blessed beyond anything that could ever be paid back in the beauty of the gift of the life Our Lady has given. Today, we look back to Thanksgiving Day 25 years ago, when Our Lady first appeared in the Field of Apparitions. Our Lady said on that Thanksgiving Day:

November 24, 1988
"I invite you to live my messages. I am here to help you! I will intercede for you to God for all your intentions."

How much She has blessed our founder, his family and the Caritas Community since that time 25 years ago. Our Lady has been true to Her word, in that She has been here to help us, more times than we can count. Our founder, and the Caritas Community could not even begin to tell of the times that Our Lady has come to our rescue when we needed it most in our mission. Today we thank God for sending Our Lady to us, and for being here to help us.

The Field of Apparitions
A picture of the Field of Apparitions this morning, shortly after 6 AM. This morning was a very cold and frosty morning as the founder and the heads of the households, along with the single consecrated, gathered silently for our daily 5 AM prayer. To the left, the Cross on Penitentiary mountain is just becoming visible in the morning light. To the right, Mary's Tree, the lone pine that stands in the Field of Apparitions. We reflect: the Cross - Jesus. The Tree, the Creator - the Father. The Holy Spirit in His love between them, fully possessed by His spouse, Our Lady - the only created being to dwell in the midst of the Trinity. The Trinity present here in a visible way. Our Lady points the way for us with Her hands extended between the Son and the Father telling us, this is your God, your All.

From The Friars eLetter: GIVE THANKS FOR IT ALL

Christian Hansen for The New York Times

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! This is the best time of the year in the Bronx. The people started lining up outside our friary at 3 AM. They were joyfully (mostly) waiting in the cold and rain for hours to receive a thanksgiving food bag and a blessing. How we are humbled by the Anawim, the little poor ones of God. It reminded me of 1 Cor 1: 26-29:

"For consider your call, brethren; not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth; but God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong, God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God."
Br. Innocent and Br. Tansi prepare some treats.
Today would be a great day to pray the Thanksgiving Canticle from Daniel 3:51-90, giving thanks to the Lord for everything. Here is a funny memory: We hosted some friars from Africa for a while. I sat next to Br. Emmanuel in the chapel, he was my chapel buddy. During the lines, "cold and chill" he would not answer "bless the Lord". During the lines, "fire and heat" I would not answer "bless the Lord". Sometimes we were laughing so much that we could barely finish the prayer. It is our faith that allows us to give thanks to God for it all.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Pray with the heart...

Thanksgiving Day in the USA

Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! Today I call all of you to prayer. Open the doors of your heart profoundly to prayer, little children, to prayer with the heart; and then the Most High will be able to act upon your freedom and conversion will begin. Your faith will become firm so that you will be able to say with all your heart: 'My God, my all.' You will comprehend, little children, that here on earth everything is passing. Thank you for having responded to my call." (November 25, 2013)

Again today, I want to encourage all of us to take a little extra time for prayer, time to spend only with God in conversation. Our Lady wants us to try to pray a little bit more with the heart! Fr. Slavko writes so much about this prayer. Here is another excerpt:

A very important message is that of the 28th March (1985), "Pray, pray, pray, You will find your greatest joy in prayer." No one amongst us is against this joy, the greatest. And so no one refuses joy, we search for it all our lives. But why do we so often not find it? Perhaps the reason is that we do not yet know how to pray.

And from this message we can see what is meant by prayer. Prayer is a way of meeting with Our Lord, and meeting Him is very important. On a human level, if you want to meet someone, you must have time for him, sit down, have a coffee or eat and talk, see what he wants how he is, listen to his problems and tell him yours too; this is a meeting, at least on a human level.

To be able to pray, to feel a deeper joy, one must take time for prayer. Prayer does not mean just saying a Hail Mary or an Our Father, it means meditating in your hearts.

The prayers asked for in these apparitions are: The Creed and seven Our Father's, Hail Mary's, and Glory Be's, the whole Rosary, monthly confession, the Mass and fasting. At the beginning Our Lady asked for one day of fasting and as of August, 1984, two days.

How you fast and if you fast, I do not know. It does not interest me. What I want to tell you though is what Our Lady wishes. When she wishes for something, it is for our good. Prayer is the way to feel a deeper joy and peace. Fasting, too, is a way. We do not fast for fasting's sake and we know that fasting is first of all a service for the faith.

You must be very careful. Our Lady has announced atheism and here we can say that she is fighting against atheism, our practical atheism. We are all a bit atheist and when Our Lady asks for fasting, she is asking us to live two days a week like poor people before the Lord.

Fasting means leaving everything and opening our hearts to God. Our Lady also fasted two days a week because it was the custom to do so in the early Church, on Wednesday and Friday. And Our Lady lived like the early Church. So we must open our hearts and wait only for God. (Fr. Slavko Barbaric. April 10, 1985, Medjugorje)

Fr. Slavko cannot talk about prayer, prayer with the heart, without talking about fasting. Interesting! Practical atheism certainly can keep us from profound prayer. More tomorrow!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Mary TV Daily Reflection 11/27/2013

(c)Mary TV 2013
I call you to prayer...

J.M.J.
November 27, 2013

Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! Today I call all of you to prayer. Open the doors of your heart profoundly to prayer, little children, to prayer with the heart; and then the Most High will be able to act upon your freedom and conversion will begin. Your faith will become firm so that you will be able to say with all your heart: 'My God, my all.' You will comprehend, little children, that here on earth everything is passing. Thank you for having responded to my call." (November 25, 2013)

Our Lady calls us again to prayer. But this call is an intense call. "Open the doors of your heart profoundly to prayer...." Profoundly... We must hear in these words a serious call. Our Lady is calling us to put all else aside, in favor of prayer.

I must say that words fail me. The proper response to this message is not to talk about it, but to do it. And so I want to invite all of you to do just that. Let's set aside a little extra time for prayer in the days ahead, a little pocket of prayer that will be special, for just God and each of us. We must respond to Our Lady's words with action!

I will also quote a few excerpts from Fr. Slavko's words about prayer from the early days of Medjugorje. These quotes will not be long. Just something to help us enter into our special time with the Lord.

Today's words from Fr. Slavko Barbaric:

When the Blessed Virgin tells us that we must pray this is nothing new: She has repeated this invitation to prayer many times, almost in every message and more especially to Jelena. But there is something else very important and that is, that after Easter she invited us twice to pray with our heart. In one of these messages she said: "I again invite you to pray with your hearts", and it is the same thing when she says: "May your prayer be a sign of your abandonment to God." Prayer should be an encounter with the Lord.

We get upset if, when we talk to someone, they become distracted and do not listen. I am sure that you also stop speaking to somebody when you realize that they are not interested. It is the same during prayer: during prayer, the Lord wants to talk to us as He did with the two disciples of Emmaus, but if we are distracted and do not pray with our heart, nothing can happen. To abandon one's self and to pray with one's heart is the same thing.

In these messages Our Lady has also mentioned one of our problems: "Your hearts are still taken up by earthly things and they worry you." This is true: we cannot pray if many things worry us. For example, when one studies, if you are a little bit concerned about your exams, you can study well, but if you are very much afraid, you are completely seized with fear of the exams and cannot study. You cannot study because both your mind and your heart are distressed. If there are trials and events that worry us so much, we are unable to pray with our heart: and so Our Lady invites us to be converted to prayer and to fasting. One frees the heart by fasting. I have much evidence of people who tell me: "When I fast I can pray better, it is easier and I can pray more deeply." Therefore, if we want to follow the messages, to pray with the heart and to have the joy that prayer can offer us, then we see that we have to fast in order to be able to abandon ourselves to God. (Fr. Slavko Barbaric. June 14, 1985, Medjugorje)

With these helpful words, let's enter into prayer, and talk to the Lord about it. How can I pray with the heart? What is distracting me from my time with you Lord? What fears or anxieties are troubling me when I pray? How can I abandon myself to You more completely? Will fasting help me to pray? How should I fast?

Come, Lord Jesus, and help us enter into a heart to heart conversation with you in these days!!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

From The Friars eLetter: Marveling At Matagalpa

Have you ever had a spiritual experience which escapes description by mere words? I was recently blessed with the opportunity to visit our friars in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. I was unprepared for what I would see. The life and work of our brothers in this little corner of the world is really inspiring. It was like seeing pages of the Gospel lived out in front of my eyes. Fr. Juan Diego is doing a spectacular job ministering at a national prison. Fr. Augustine was shining as he prayed, blessed and baptized the sick at the local hospital. Fr. Albert is leading a much needed youth ministry which is meeting some special needs in the culture there. Br. Joachim doesn't need to speak Español to communicate the love of Christ with his infectious smile and jovial demeanor as he seems to be present everywhere in the town.
Matagalpa Cathedral in the center of the city.

Every morning as the sun was rising, while drinking delicious local coffee, I would pray and bless the people of Matagalpa. The Kingdom of God is coming in that little place. About two hours from the Managua, Matagalpa is a city surrounded by mountains. Our Convento San Antonio is situated on the edge of town, half way up a peak called Apante, the mountain of peace. Here is what I really want to write about: Responding to some inspirations, dreams and prophecies Fr. John Anthony is coordinating a very special project. Looking down upon the city atop Apante, we are building a 33 meter cross and chapel. During a television interview to announce the project, an earthquake hit the area - a foretaste of what is to come. They will have an outdoor way of the cross which starts at the Cathedral and ends on Apante. The fourth station will be at our friary. Stay tuned!!! Mary TV Daily Reflection 11/25/2013

(11/24/13)

"Dear children! Today when Heaven is near to you in a special way, I call you to prayer so that through prayer you place God in the first place. Little children, today I am near you and I bless each of you with my motherly blessing so that you have the strength and love for all the people you meet in your earthly life and that you can give God's love. I rejoice with you and I desire to tell you that your brother Slavko has been born into Heaven and intercedes for you. Thank you for having responded to my call." (November 25, 2000)

Yesterday was the 13th anniversary of the death of Fr. Slavko Barbaric, OFM . Though Fr. Slavko has been "born into Heaven" he remains very much with us in Medjugorje. His priestly influence, wisdom, teaching and guidance are still keenly felt there. Yesterday, the parish climbed Krizevac, in honor of Fr. Slavko. (Fr. Slavko climbed the mountain almost every day, early in the morning, to pray and do penance.) I am including a few pictures of Fr. Merinko leading the parishioners in prayer, especially at the spot where Fr. Slavko died. It is a holy spot, solemn and revered. We can all ask Fr. Slavko to intercede for us. We need his help!

(11/24/13)

(11/24/13

(11/24/13

I want to include today a homily that Fr. Slavko gave on December 8, 1984 in Medjugorje. It is a bit long and rambles a bit too, but it contains the essentials of Fr. Slavko's teaching about Our Lady of Medjugorje, and is so beautiful. We can receive his words today, as if they were freshly given; they are so true and deep. This homily is from the "Gray Book - Open Your Hearts to Mary Queen of Peace." which is out of print.

"I am your Mother, my beloved ones, and I have come to teach you to love"

[I am your mother...]
Every Thursday, Our Lady gives messages for the Parish and for all the pilgrims. Last Thursday, she said: "I beg you, during this period to renew prayer in your families. In the name of Our Lord I have given you many messages, but you have not followed them. If you listen, if you follow my messages, this Christmas will be unforgettable for you. If you do not follow them, do not allow this day of joy to become the saddest day for me!" After every message Our Lady says "Thank you for answering my call." What does this message mean? You can understand it by these happenings at Medjugorje during the last forty-one months: Mary has decided to enter into every family and wants to be accepted as Mother. She says in a message: "If you have not listened to my messages, the day of joy will become the saddest day for me." In what sense does she say this? Like a Mother she wants to gather us together in peace and love. If a son or daughter is missing from home a mother will be sad. We must understand the message in this sense. Each of us is in a way responsible for whether Christmas will be a day of joy or not. Our Lady, like a Mother, has entered into our life and families, into our Church. On 8th May, Our Lady asked all of us to be consecrated to Our Lord [through her]. This means; "I accept you as my Mother and let you enter my heart, my family, my community or where I live."

[Love...]
At the start of this time of Advent Our Lady said: "Dear children, you do not yet know how to love and you do not know how to listen to the messages with love, the words I give you: I am your Mother, my beloved ones, and I have come to teach you to love, to listen with love, to pray with love but not just because you have difficulties or crosses. You glorify Our Lord with each of your crosses."

A new liturgical year is beginning and we see that Our Lady, as Mother and teacher, tells us: look, our program for this year is as follows: "I am your Mother and I have come on earth to teach you to love." There is one question which is valid for all of us here in this church or in the world: who of us can say they have finished this school of love and know everything? None of us can say this, I believe. Love is something dynamic and we cannot say today that we loved yesterday and that is sufficient, this is like saying that we breathed yesterday: we much breathe today as well. It is a hard school that lasts all our life long. If Our Lady has so much patience with us, our hardness and the hardness of our heart, then I believe that we are held to follow her. Our Lady is not coming to us because she has nothing else to do in heaven: she loves us all as Our Mother and in many messages has told us: "I am your Mother, and I am the Mother of everyone; I love you all."

[Prayer...]
In a message in November, she said: "Dear children you are a chosen people and Our Lord is giving you many graces. But you have not yet understood: I have nothing else to tell you but this: pray, pray, pray. By prayer you will understand my love for you and the love of Our Lord."

Our Lady behaves like a mother who has prepared a large table with much to eat and drink but now sees her children in the corners of the home complaining: we are hungry, thirsty, in trouble, have no peace.... The mother tells them to come, look, everything is ready, to come and be seated together and eat so there will be no more hunger and thirst...but peace for all. So, everything is ready, Our Lord has given everything. If we wait, then it is partly our fault. Let us open our hearts!

In another message in November, Our Lady said: "You do not yet understand the significance of the messages I have given you, which Our Lord has given through me. Pray to the Holy Spirit that he may illuminate you that you may understand." So pray to the Holy Spirit. You will remember other messages about the Holy Spirit: once Our Lady said: "You ask for many things; ask first of all for the Holy Spirit and if He comes, everything else will be given to you."

[Bible...]
On 18th October, Our Lady asked everyone: "Today I ask you, dear children, to read the Bible. Put it in a prominent place in your homes so that it may be a stimulus to you to read it and to pray." This was said on the Feast of Saint Luke the Evangelist, who has written much about Our Lady that only she could have told him: her dialogue with the Angel and her prayer, the Magnificat.

[The Rosary...]
It is very important for us to know that Our Lady asks us for the entire rosary every day (the joyful, sorrowful and glorious mysteries). Without knowing the Bible, we are not able to contemplate and meditate well. Our Lady asks us for these mysteries, not just to make us recite one hundred and fifty Hail Mary's each day and then to say we have finished! This is not the sense of the rosary. In a message she said: "Pray with your hearts." This means that, by contemplating the mysteries of Our Lady's life and those of her son, Jesus, we come closer to our Redemption. For example if we say "let us contemplate the second joyful mystery" we meditate on how Our Lady visited her cousin, Elizabeth. This does not mean just knowing that Mary visited Elizabeth, but Our Lady wants us to use her example to find a real stimulus for ourselves during contemplation: who is waiting for us today, who is waiting for our help, our time, our words, our consolation? We have contemplated well if we act according to our prayer, so prayer continues.

Reciting the rosary with our heart means for each mystery, searching and finding real stimulation for our daily lives. If you cannot forgive someone or find it difficult, why not meditate the fifth sorrowful mystery; Jesus forgives everyone. If we contemplate this mystery with our heart, we will find grace and be able to forgive and make peace; our conversion has begun when the Word makes us act.

Jesus once said: My Word is like a sword, it will never leave you in peace while you are in sin, while you hate or are unable to forgive. The Word will not leave you until it has brought forth fruit. This is what it means for all of us to begin with, so take your time and your prayer will grow. Prayer comes by praying not by theory about prayer. Prayer comes by praying as an appetite comes by eating. To say that we do not know how to pray does not mean that we should not begin: it is but an excuse. We must find time, take up the Bible and the rosary. Start and you will see! (Father Slavko Barbaric - Medjugorje, 8th December, 1984)

Fr. Slavko, please pray for us to move into Advent of 2013 with renewed devotion to our Mother, the Queen of Peace. Pray that we will put into actions all she has taught us. Thank you for your example and your priestly ministry! Fr. Slavko, pray for us!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Spiritual Gems-Why Controlling our Tongue is Necessary Especially as We Suffer-November 23, 2013

Why Controlling our Tongue is Necessary, Especially as We Suffer

Humiliation is my daily food.  I understand that the bride must herself share in everything that is the groom's; and so His cloak of mockery must cover me, too. At those times when I suffer much, I try to remain silent, as I do not trust my tongue which, at such moments, is inclined to talk for itself, while its duty is to help me praise God for all the blessings and gifts which He has given me.

When I receive Jesus in Holy Communion, I ask Him fervently to deign to heal my tongue so that I would offend neither God nor neighbor by it.  I want my tongue to praise God without cease. Great are the faults committed by the tongue.  The soul will not attain sanctity if it does not keep watch over its tongue.
