The name “Our Lady of the Sacred Heart” justifies the great intuition of Vatican II

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is not just a name, it is above all a way to present and understand the Virgin Mary. It is a way to contemplate her and pray for her intercession.

In connection with the founding of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Issoudun (France), Father Chevalier promised to honor Mary under a new name that he revealed in 1859 as Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Thus he brought together two names that were dear to his soul: the Sacred Heart (Christ) and Our Lady (Mary). We do not say “Our Lady of Issoudun” (in reference to the place) but “Our Lady of the Sacred Heart” (in reference to a person).

The new name, full of hope, expresses the unique relationship between Jesus and Mary, whom God chose to give birth to his beloved son. This name justifies the great intuition of Vatican II: "Mary is the one who makes us enter into the mystery of Christ and the Church."

Close because she is one of us, Mary, better than anyone teaches us to make our own the feelings that are in the Heart of Christ, according to the motto of Father Chevalier: "May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be loved everywhere, forever."
