SCRIPTURE COMMENTARY # 604

The soldiers therefore came: and they broke the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him. But after they were come to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side: and immediately there came out blood and water. (John 19:32-34)

THE OPENING OF THE SIDE OF JESUS, sleeping the sleep of death on the Cross, was, according to the Fathers of the Church, a fulfillment of the type presented by the creation of the first woman from the side of the sleeping Adam. From the Side of Jesus Christ, the second Adam and our spiritual Father, there proceeded the Church, which is the second Eve, the true mother of the living.
