A love that waits and follows

October 12, 2010

Dear Family of Mary!

Dear children; Today I call you to a humble, my children, humble devotion. Your hearts need to be just. May your crosses be your means in the battle against the sins of the present time. May your weapon be patience and boundless love - a love that knows to wait and which will make you capable of recognizing God's signs - that your life, by humble love, may show the truth to all those who seek it in the darkness of lies. My children, my apostles, help me to open the paths to my Son. Once again I call you to pray for your shepherds. Alongside them, I will triumph. Thank you.

A love that knows to wait does make us capable of recognizing God's signs.  Such a love is so strong and steadfast, so full of faith in Jesus, that the soul is able to surrender everything to the Lord, and wait for Him to act.  Such a soul begins to rely on the actions of God more than on its own strength or perception.  Waiting on the Lord and following His signs becomes a way of life for such a one.

Denis and I learned a lesson about waiting in faith and trust and following God's signs long ago when our children were little.  We were living in a big apartment building in a community setting with other families.  It was an experiment in Christian community.  But after two years we felt we needed to live again in our own home with our children.  We had very little money to buy a home and we really wanted to move quickly.  Our house hunt was frustrating and we were finding nothing.  Finally we prayed, asking the Lord what we should do.  The answer we seemed to get was to wait until after Christmas (this was the fall).  The Lord seemed to tell us that if we tried to buy a house right away, He would be with us but He wouldn't be able to take care of us as He had planned.  The word was to wait until after Christmas.  So we waited.  We stopped the search for a house, and just waited.

It wasn't easy to wait.  When you want something, it can be hard to wait.  But we waited and prayed.  Sure enough, right after Christmas a friend told us about a house that was about to go up for sale that was very inexpensive and in the neighborhood we liked.  It was situated on three lots and had many trees around it.  We contacted the owner and he agreed to sell it to us. But the price was out of range for us.  So we prayed again, and within a short time, we were offered help with a down payment, and purchased the house.  It was and still is the perfect house for the Nolan's.  We have raised our 8 children here, and prayed with many people over the years in this little house.  Now we pray our internet rosary from that same house!  Who would have thought that waiting until after Christmas would make such a difference!  But it did.  God had a plan for us, and it just needed time to fall into place.

There is such peace in knowing that God is leading us in our lives.  Signs from God can be small, and subtle, but the heart that waits in love will perceive them and follow.  Then God can act in such a way that our lives show His peace to all around us.  It is the peace of an obedient heart that has been well cared for!

In Jesus and Mary!

It always amazes me how Cathy's insights are so in tune with mine and I hope yours too! This story about their waiting to buy a house and it's outcome brings to mind my own quest for a home of our own. We lived in a broken down apartment with some wild neighbors, who were either on drugs, drinking, or fighting, in New York City. I prayed for over 20 years for "a home of our own," not knowing where I could get the money to buy one. Everything in New York was way above what I could afford. Then the miracle came through my daughter and my sister-in-law, both of whom helped with a down payment on a condo here in Florida, that we could afford, even if only on Social Security. It was a big sacrifice for me to give up my deacon assignment at the local parish but for my wife Marianne to have a secure roof over her head, we made the move. I thank Jesus and Mary everyday for this gift and I trust that They will take care of us till the end of our lives here on earth and welcome us to our new home in heaven!
