Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4
2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14
Luke 17:5-10
You may wonder why the apostles felt the sudden need to ask Jesus to increase their faith. Were they going through some crisis on the journey to Jerusalem? Was this a prelude to Luke’s account of the apostles huddled in the upper room after Jesus’ death? Were the rigors imposed by discipleship undermining their faith? Pairing this Gospel selection with the reading from the prophet Habakkuk seems to suggest that.
Paul’s words to Timothy this week remind us that the gift of faith is not a cowardly spirit, but one of power and love and self-control. Those who have been on mission can recall times when, like the apostles, they cried out to the Lord for an increase of faith. Even while testifying to the faith there can be moments of doubt. But as Paul reminds Timothy, our strength comes from God.
Suggested Missionary Action: Reach out to a missionary through e-mail or a letter and offer them a word of support.
