First Sunday in Advent
Lectionary: 1 Reading 1
Responsorial Psalm
Reading 2
Gospel
We often overlook Advent in our rush toward Christmas, but taking the time to understand the essence of this season gives us a greater appreciation for the birth of Jesus. Think about the Jewish people who, as shown in the first two readings, strive to follow the way of the Lord. They look forward to the time when God transforms violence into peace, darkness into light.
Paul tells Jesus’ followers to “throw off the words of darkness and put on the armor of light.” If we need further encouragement to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ, we have His own words: “Stay awake: For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.” We may not enjoy examining our relationship with God even if it’s for our own benefit. Yet thinking about God’s compassionate desire for our good and the good of others draws us closer to Him – and to our brothers and sisters everywhere.
Suggested missionary action: Pray each day for the people of a different nation you hear about on the news. Pray especially for peace and for the light of faith for all nations.

Please no anonymous comments. I require at least some way for people to address each other personally and courteously. Having some name or handle helps.
